Oxidative debromination and degradation of tetrabromo-bisphenol A by a functionalized silica-supported iron(III)-tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin catalyst

Oxidative degradation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol by SBA-15 supported metal tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrins in the presence of humic substances

Metal tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrins were immobilized on sulfonated SBA-15 (MTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15, M = Fe, Mn, Zn) for oxidative degradation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol in the presence of humic substances. The influence of the central metal of metalloporphyrins, pH, and catalyst dosage on the 2,4,6-tribromophenol degradation was investigated. FeTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15 and MnTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15 showed the catalytic activities. The activity of MnTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15 was more strongly inhibited by humic substances than that of FeTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15. Kinetic study indicated that humic substances suppressed the generation of high valent metal-oxo species in MnTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15 at slightly acid condition. There was a clear linear relationship between the content of phenolic-OH and aromatic-C in humic substances and the corresponding inhibition ability. The inhibition by humic substances is probably ascribed to the coordination of humic substances with the monopersulfate species of MnTMPyP-SO₃-pr-SBA-15, which prevented the formation of the reactive Mn-oxo species.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Enhanced Singlet Oxygen Production for Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation

Oxygen vacancies are usually thought to be beneficial for photogenerated charge separation. In this work, the oxygen vacancies in ov-Bi₂ O₃ (Bi₂ O₃ with oxygen vacancy) were found to be able to produce ¹ O₂ in the dark owing to chemical adsorption. The oxygen vacancies were further found to be responsible for ov-Bi₂ O₃ exhibiting higher ¹ O₂ generation under light irradiation with ¹ O₂ as the only reactive oxygen species (ROS) than Bi₂ O₃ with ¹ O₂ , H₂ O₂ , and others as the ROS. The photocatalytic activity was investigated for the selective photo-oxidation of phenyl methyl sulfide to phenyl methyl sulfoxide and phenyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. In either case, ov-Bi₂ O₃ displayed better performance than Bi₂ O₃ , suggesting the significant role of oxygen vacancies in modulating the photocatalytic oxidation properties. This work provides an alternative approach to obtain singlet oxygen, which may guide further design of photocatalysts with high efficiency and selectivity towards photocatalytic organic synthesis.

Immobilized Lignin Peroxidase-Like Metalloporphyrins as Reusable Catalysts in Oxidative Bleaching of Industrial Dyes

Synthetic and bioinspired metalloporphyrins are a class of redox-active catalysts able to emulate several enzymes such as cytochromes P450, ligninolytic peroxidases, and peroxygenases. Their ability to perform oxidation and degradation of recalcitrant compounds, including aliphatic hydrocarbons, phenolic and non-phenolic aromatic compounds, sulfides, and nitroso-compounds, has been deeply investigated. Such a broad substrate specificity has suggested their use also in the bleaching of textile plant wastewaters. In fact, industrial dyes belong to very different chemical classes, being their effective and inexpensive oxidation an important challenge from both economic and environmental perspective. Accordingly, we review here the most widespread synthetic metalloporphyrins, and the most promising formulations for large-scale applications. In particular, we focus on the most convenient approaches for immobilization to conceive economical affordable processes. Then, the molecular routes of catalysis and the reported substrate specificity on the treatment of the most diffused textile dyes are encompassed, including the use of redox mediators and the comparison with the most common biological and enzymatic alternative, in order to depict an updated picture of a very promising field for large-scale applications.

Mechanistic and kinetic investigation on OH-initiated oxidation of tetrabromobisphenol A

Detailed mechanism of the OH-initiated transformation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has been investigated by quantum chemical methods in this paper. Abstraction reactions of hydrogen atoms from the OH groups and CH3 groups of TBBPA are the dominant pathways of the initial reactions. The produced phenolic-type radical and alkyl-type radical may transfer to 4,4'-(ethene-1,1-diyl)bis(2,6-dibromophenol), 4-acetyl-2,6-dibromophenol and 2,6-dibromobenzoquinone at high temperature. In water, major products are 2,6-dibromo-p-hydroquinone, 4-isopropylene-2,6-dibromophenol and 4-(2-hydroxyisopropyl)-2,6-dibromophenol resulting from the addition reactions. Total rate constants of the initial reaction are 1.02 × 10(-12) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) in gas phase and 1.93 × 10(-12) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) in water at 298 K.

Biomimetic Sulfide Oxidation by the Means of Immobilized Fe(III)-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphin under Mild Experimental Conditions

This paper describes the oxidation of inorganic sulfide to sulfate, minimizing the formation of elemental sulfur. The described catalytic reaction uses dilute hydrogen peroxide at nearly neutral pH values in the presence of a bioinspired, heterogenized, and commercial ferriporphin. A substantial increase of the percentage of sulfide converted to sulfate is obtained in comparison with the yields obtained when working with hydrogen peroxide alone. The biomimetic catalyst also proved to be a much more efficient catalyst than horseradish peroxidase. Accordingly, it could be suitable for large-scale applications. Further studies are in progress to drive sulfate yields up to nearly quantitative.
