The preparation of ORM-10921, a selective α_2C-adrenoceptor antagonist with promising anti-psychotic properties, was successfully achieved using asymmetric α-alkylation of α,β-unsaturated imide and Bischler–Napieralski cyclization/asymmetric reduction as the key steps.
