Fluorescent “OFF–ON” Sensors for the Detection of Sn2+ Ions Based on Amine-Functionalized Rhodamine 6G

These structurally isomeric rhodamine 6G-based amino derivatives are designed to detect Sn2+ ions. The receptors exhibit rapid fluorescent “turn-on” responses towards Sn2+. The absorption (530 nm) and fluorescent intensity (551 nm) of the receptors increase when increasing the concentration of Sn2+. The hydrazine derivative exhibits more rapid sensitivity towards Sn2+ than the ethylene diamine derivative, indicating that the presence of an alkyl chain in the diamine decreases the sensitivity of the receptors towards Sn2+. The presence of carbonyl groups and terminal amino groups strongly influences the sensitivity of the chemosensors toward Sn2+ by a spirolactam ring-opening mechanism. The receptors exhibit 1:1 complexation with Sn2+ as evidenced by Job plot, and the corresponding limit of detection was found to be 1.62 × 10−7 M. The fluorescence images of the receptors and their complexes reveal their potential applications for imaging of Sn2+ in real/online samples.

Recent advances in tin ion detection using fluorometric and colorimetric chemosensors

The innovation of chemosensors for tin ions (Sn4+/Sn2+) has evolved as a key research topic in recent decades, garnering a lot of attention due to their environmental, industrial and biological importance.

Preparation of a new fluorescence nanochemosensor for Sn(II) ions by a modified nanoprecipitation method

A new dialdehyde was designed and synthesized containing naphthalene groups, and then its macrocycle was prepared with 1,4-diaminobuthan. A modified nanoprecipitation method has been reported for the preparation of the nanoparticles. In this method, to obtain nanoparticles with small particle sizes, the nucleation rate was increased with decreasing of the mixing time. The organic nanoparticles were used for turn-off fluorescence response of low concentration of Sn²⁺ ions over cations such as Cs⁺, K⁺, Na⁺, Ba²⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺, Pb^2+, Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, and Hg²⁺ and ions in aqueous buffer solution. The limit of detection was 5.4 nM.

A novel colorimetric and fluorometric probe for biothiols based on MnO2 NFs-Rhodamine B system

Herein, a novel bimodal ratiometric probe for sensitive and selective detection of biothiols (including glutathione (GSH), cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcys)) was constructed, which was based on the redox reaction between manganese dioxide nanoflakes (MnO₂ NFs) and rhodamine (RhB) and biothiols. When MnO₂ NFs was added into RhB solution, RhB was oxidized to a series of derivatives, accompanying with the colorimetric color changing from purple to light pink and fluorescence changing from red to green. In the presence of GSH, Cys or Hcys, they could reduce MnO₂ NFs to Mn²⁺, thereby preventing the following oxidization of RhB and the corresponding color and fluorescence changes. The absorption intensity ratio and fluorescence intensity ratio showed good linear relationships with the concentrations of biothiols. The colorimetric detection limits for GSH, Cys and Hcys were 0.057 μM, 0.140 μM and 0.087 μM, respectively. And the fluorescence detection limits were 0.177 μM, 0.282 μM and 0.161 μM. More importantly, this probe was successfully applied to monitor the concentration of GSH/Cys/Hcys in human serum samples, with satisfactory recovery. Thus, this MnO₂ NFs-RhB platform can potentially be a candidate for the detection of biothiols.

Rhodamine-Appended Benzophenone Probe for Trace Quantity Detection of Pd2+ in Living Cells

Designing a fluorogenic probe for the determination of Pd²⁺ is a challenging analytical task. Pd²⁺ is a potentially toxic and harmful substance even at a very low level of contamination in the end product. Herein, a promising spirolactam-functionalized chemosensor, rhodamine-appended benzophenone (HBR), is designed and characterized by spectroscopic (¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ESI-MS, and FT-IR) data along with the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. It acts as a highly sensitive and selective fluorogenic chemosensor for Pd²⁺ ions over other environmentally relevant cations in aqueous ethanol (1:1, v/v) at pH 7.4. The limit of detection (LOD) is 34 nM that is far below the WHO recommended Pd uptake (47 μM). The plausible mechanism involves the specific binding of HBR with Pd²⁺ and the formation of 1:1 stoichiometry of the complex, which has been supported by ESI-MS, FT-IR data, Job plot, and association constant data (Benesi-Hildebrand plot). The computation study has been attempted to explain the ring cleavage fluorescence enhancement scheme of HBR upon binding with Pd²⁺. Furthermore, this "turn-on" probe has successfully applied to image the Pd²⁺ ion in cultured MDA-MB-231 cells.

Use of rhodamine-allyl Schiff base in chemodosimetric processes for total palladium estimation and application in live cell imaging

An allyl-rhodamine Schiff base shows excellent palladium sensitivity (LOD, 95 nM) irrespective of Pd(0,ii,iv) and practical applicability is judged in living cells of RAW 264.7 (macrophage) cells.

Specific recognition of Cr3+ under physiological conditions by allyl substituted appendage rhodamine and its cell-imaging studies

An allyloxynitrophenylimio-propylhydroxyl appended rhodamine (RD-3) specifically recognises Cr³⁺ in aqueous buffer medium at pH 7.4. The visible light excitable reagent (λ_ex 505 nm) on selective binding to Cr³⁺ exhibited a strong fluorescence turn-on response with powerful emission at 557 nm and the tail of this luminescence band is extended to ∼650 nm. Interference studies confirm that other metal ions (27 ions) do not hamper the detection process of Cr³⁺. The sensing mechanism is studied by absorption, fluorescence, Job's plot, and ¹H NMR titration studies. The detection limit is as low as 33 nM. The practical applicability of RD-3 is examined for imaging Cr(iii) ions in HCT116 (human colorectal carcinoma) cells.

Fluorimetric detection of Sn(2+) ion in aqueous medium using Salicylaldehyde based nanoparticles and application to natural samples analysis

The fluorescent 2-[(E)-(2-phenylhydrazinylidene)methyl]phenol nanoparticles (PHPNPs) were prepared by a simple reprecipitation method. The prepared PHPNPs examined by Dynamic Light Scattering show narrower particle size distribution having an average particle size of 93.3nm. The Scanning Electron Microphotograph shows distinct spherical shaped morphology of nanoparticles. The blue shift in UV-absorption and fluorescence spectra of PHPNPs with respect to corresponding spectra of PHP in acetone solution indicates H- aggregates and Aggregation Induced Enhanced Emission (AIEE) for nanoparticles. The nanoparticles show selective tendency towards the recognition of Sn(2+) ions by enhancing the fluorescence intensity preference to Cu(2+), Fe(3+), Fe(2+), Ni(2+), NH4(+), Ca(2+), Pb(2+), Hg(2+) and Zn(2+) ions, which actually seem to quench the fluorescence of nanoparticles. The studies on Langmuir adsorption plot, fluorescence lifetime of PHPNPs, DLS-Zeta sizer, UV-visible and fluorescence titration with and without Sn(2+) helped to propose a suitable mechanism of fluorescence enhancement of nanoparticles by Sn(2+) and their binding ability during complexation. The fluorescence enhancement effect of PHPNPs induced by Sn(2+) is further used to develop an analytical method for detection of Sn(2+) from aqueous medium in environmental samples.

A through bond energy transfer based ratiometric probe for fluorescent imaging of Sn2+ ions in living cells

A 4-(naphthalen-1-ylethynyl) aniline appended rhodamine based fluorescent chemosensor ‘NAP-RD’ is synthesized which undergoes through bond energy transfer in the presence of Sn²⁺ ions in mixed aqueous media.

Sn(ii) induced concentration dependent dynamic to static excimer conversion of a conjugated naphthalene derivative

The colorimetric and fluorescence recognition of Sn²⁺ has been achieved using a naphthalene appended diformyl-p-cresol derivative (L). The dynamic excimer, observed up to 50 μM Sn²⁺, gradually converts to a static type above 50 μM Sn²⁺. DFT calculations support the experimental findings.

A new Rhodamine B-based 'on-off' chemical sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity toward Fe(3+) and its imaging in living cells

A new fluorescent chemosensor based on a Rhodamine B and pyrrole conjugate (RBPY) has been designed and synthesized. UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies show that RBPY exhibits a high selectivity and sensitivity toward Fe(3+) among many other metal cations in a MeOH/H2O solution (3:2, v/v, pH 7.10, HEPES buffer, 0.1mM) by forming a 1:1 complex with Fe(3+). Furthermore, results reveal that the formation of the RBPY-Fe(3+) complex is fully reversible in the presence of sulfide anions and could also be used as an efficient sensor for S(2-). Importantly, fluorescence microscopy experiments further demonstrated that RBPY can be utilized as a fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe(3+) in human liver (L-02) cells.
