Nonlinear optical properties tuning in meso-tetraphenylporphyrin derivatives substituted with donor/acceptor groups in picosecond and nanosecond regimes

The Performance Evaluation of Meso-Tetraphenyl Porphyrin and Azo Dyes as Photosensitizers in Dye-sensitized Solar Cells

The photovoltaic properties of five different mono-azo function and meso-tetraphenyl porphyrin dyes have been investigated by computational DFT/TDDFT calculations and measurement of the J-V properties of their cells. The photovoltaic efficiency of the cells based on these dyes were determined by both experimental and theoretical methods. The efficiency-to-cost ratios of the azo-dye cells showed that they could be cheaper substitutes to porphyrin-based cells. Eriochrome blue black (EBB) and eriochrome black T (EBT) cells were shown to possess the best photovoltaic properties by the two methods employed (theory and experiment). The presence of two naphthol moieties at both ends of their -N = N- group has been adduced as possible reason for their relatively outstanding performance. The extremely low efficiency-to-cost ratio obtained for cell-POR suggests that the use of porphyrin as sensitizer may not be as economically viable as some azo dyes. MTO, EBB and EBT were found to be the most cost-effective among the investigated dyes. The porphyrin's low performance may have been amplified by the absence of an effective anchor group in its molecular structure.

Carbazole appended trans-dicationic pyridinium porphyrin finds supremacy in DNA binding/photocleavage over a non-carbazolyl analogue

A carbazolyl appended trans-pyridyl porphyrin (1) was synthesized and its dicationic form 2 was obtained by methylation of the pyridyl group. Copper and zinc complexes of porphyrin 2 (Cu(II), 3; Zn(II), 4) were isolated and characterized by various modern spectroscopic techniques. The DNA binding properties of 2, 3, and 4 have been explored against calf thymus-DNA (CT-DNA). DNA binding was quantized using the intrinsic binding constant (K_b) that was calculated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, and the value K_b = 1.6 × 10⁶ M^-1 for compound 2 reveals a better interaction of 2 towards CT-DNA than those of 3 (3.1 × 10⁵ M^-1) and 4 (3.4 × 10⁵ M^-1), which follows the order 2 > 4 > 3. The fluorescence quenching efficiency and ethidium bromide quenching assay also indicated a good binding affinity of all the compounds towards CT-DNA. Furthermore, the spectroscopic data suggest that the possible mode of interaction is intercalation. The docking studies were in accordance with the experimental results. Notably, DNA cleavage studies reveal that 2 shows better damage than 3 and 4 which is in accordance with the binding affinity order 2 > 4 > 3. The observed quantum yield (2: 0.65, 3: 0.33, and 4: 0.97) and no change in DNA cleavage in the presence of NaN₃ reveal the involvement of singlet oxygen. The singlet excited state lifetimes were in the range of 6.3-1.2 ns. Furthermore, these porphyrins can be investigated as interesting photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy and photochemotherapy.

Potential Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Response Facilitated by Intramolecular Charge Transfer in a Simple Schiff Base Molecule: Experimental and Theoretical Exploration

A Schiff base, namely, 4-[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) amino] benzoic acid (L1), has been synthesized by the condensation reaction. It has been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , UV-vis spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and DFT/B3LYP calculations. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that L1 exists in the zwitterionic (N-H···...O) form. The supramolecular interactions were investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis. In addition, third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of L1 were also investigated. The nonlinear refractive index (n2), nonlinear absorption coefficient (β), and the third-order NLO susceptibility (χ(3)) have been estimated at different concentrations and at different laser powers using close and openaperture Z-scan data. The values of the parameters were found to be varying almost linearly with concentration and power. The present study revealed the utility of the material for various optoelectronic devices such as optical switches, optical data storage devices, and optical sensors. The optical limiting study reveals that this material can also be exploited as an instrument protector from unwanted laser illumination. Furthermore, the NLO behavior of L1 has also been studied by B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) results.
