Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Some Potential Bioactive Imidazolium-Based Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids

Anticorrosive performance of newly synthesized dipyridine based ionic liquids by experimental and theoretical approaches

Two newly synthetic nontoxic dipyridine-based ionic liquids (PILs) with the same chain lengths and different polar groups were investigated: bispyridine-1-ium tetrafluoroborate (BPHP, TFPHP) with terminal polar groups Br and CF3, respectively, on Carbon steel (CS) in 8M H3PO4 as corrosion inhibitors. Their chemical structure was verified by performing 1HNMR and 13CNMR. Their corrosion inhibition was investigated by electrochemical tests, especially as mass transfer with several characterizations: Scanning electron microscope/Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), UV-visible, Atomic force microscope, Atomic absorbance spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Gloss value. Theoretical calculation using density functional theory by calculating several parameters, molecular electrostatic potential, Fukui Indices, and Local Dual Descriptors were performed to demonstrate the reactivity behavior and the reactive sites of two molecules with a concentration range (1.25-37.5 × 10-5 M) and temperature (293-318 K). The maximum inhibition efficiency (76.19%) and uniform coverage were sufficient for BPHP at an optimum concentration of 37.5 × 10-5 M with the lowest temperature of 293 K. TFPHP recorded 71.43% at the same conditions. Two PILs were adsorbed following the El-Awady adsorption isotherm, including physicochemical adsorption. The computational findings agree with Electrochemical measurements and thus confirm CS's corrosion protection in an aggressive environment.

Ionic Liquids: Emerging Antimicrobial Agents

Antimicrobial resistance has become a serious threat to global health. New antimicrobials are thus urgently needed. Ionic liquids (ILs), salts consisting of organic cations and anions with melting points less than 100°C, have been recently found to be promising in antimicrobial field as they may disrupt the bacterial wall and membrane and consequently lead to cell leakage and death. Different types of antimicrobial ILs are introduced in the review, including cationic, polymeric, and anionic ILs. Being the main type of the antimicrobial ILs, the review focuses on the structure and the antimicrobial mechanisms of cationic ILs. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models of the cationic ILs are also included. Increase in alkyl chain length and lipophilicity is beneficial to increase the antimicrobial effects of cationic ILs. Polymeric ILs are homopolymers of monomer ILs or copolymers of ILs and other monomers. They have great potential in the field of antibiotics as they provide stronger antimicrobial effects than the sum of the monomer ILs. Anionic ILs are composed of existing anionic antibiotics and organic cations, being capable to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of the original form. Nonetheless, the medical application of antimicrobial ILs is limited by the toxicity. The structural optimization aided by QSAR model and combination with existing antibiotics may provide a solution to this problem and expand the application range of ILs in antimicrobial field.

Challenges for Safe Electrolytes Applied in Lithium-Ion Cells-A Review

The aspect of safety in electronic devices has turned out to be a huge challenge for the world of science. Thus far, satisfactory power and energy densities, efficiency, and cell capacities have been achieved. Unfortunately, the explosiveness and thermal runaway of the cells prevents them from being used in demanding applications such as electric cars at higher temperatures. The main aim of this review is to highlight different electrolytes used in lithium-ion cells as well as the flammability aspect. In the paper, the authors present liquid inorganic electrolytes, composite polymer-ceramic electrolytes, ionic liquids (IL), polymeric ionic liquids, polymer electrolytes (solvent-free polymer electrolytes (SPEs), gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), and composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs)), and different flame retardants used to prevent the thermal runaway and combustion of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Additionally, various flame tests used for electrolytes in LIBs have been adopted. Aside from a detailed description of the electrolytes consumed in LIBs. Last section in this work discusses hydrogen as a source of fuel cell operation and its practical application as a global trend that supports green chemistry.

Synthesis, Characterization, DNA Binding, Anticancer, and Molecular Docking Studies of Novel Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids with Fluorinated Phenylacetamide Tethers

Newer imidazolium ionic liquid (IL) halides 4a-f appending variety of fluorinated phenylacetamide side chains were designed and synthesized through quaternization of 1-methyl and/or 1,2-dimethylimidazole with appropriate 2-chloro-N-(fluorinatedphenyl)acetamides. The resulting ILs were converted to their respective ionic liquid analogues carrying fluorinated counteranions (PF₆ ^-, BF₄ ^-, and/or CF₃COO^-) 5a-r. All newly synthesized ILs were fully characterized using several spectroscopic experiments such as ¹H, ¹³C, ¹¹B, ¹⁹F, ³¹P NMR, and mass analysis. The synthesized ionic liquids were investigated for their DNA binding and anticancer activities. The obtained DNA binding constants ranged from 1.444 × 10⁵ to 3.518 × 10⁵, indicating a reasonably good binding affinity. The percentage of anticancer activities ranged from 48 to 59 with H-1229 cell line, showing quite good anticancer potential. The modeling studies indicated the interactions of the reported molecules with DNA via hydrogen bonds. These were in agreement with those of DNA binding and anticancer results. Briefly, the designed ionic liquids may be used as good anticancer candidates for treating human cancer.

Self-assembled systems based on novel hydroxyethylated imidazolium-containing amphiphiles: Interaction with DNA decamer, protein and lipid

The study on aggregation capacity of novel imidazolium-containing amphiphiles of 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)alkylimidazolium bromide series and their interaction with bio-objects (DNA decamer, bovine serum albumin, phospholipid) was performed. It was revealed that introduction of hydroxyethyl moiety into the surfactant molecule resulted in 1.5-2-fold decrease of critical micelle concentration. These modified amphiphiles quantitatively bind DNA decamer due to intercalation and hydrophobic interactions with lipoplex formation. The evaluation of membranotropic properties of these surfactants exhibited that initiation of disordering and compression of the model cell wall consisting of dipalmitoyl phosphocholine (regulation of permeability for various compounds) could be achieved by variation of the length of hydrophobic tail of imidazolium-containing amphiphiles. Transition from individual surfactants solutions to their mixtures with protein (bovine serum albumin) is accompanied by 8-fold decrease of aggregation thresholds and characterized by the presence of two critical points. The binding of components of surfactant/BSA binary systems took place through tryptophan amino acid residue of peptide macromolecule.

A Profile of the In Vitro Anti-Tumor Activity and In Silico ADME Predictions of Novel Benzothiazole Amide-Functionalized Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

A focused array of green imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) encompassing benzothiazole ring and amide linkage were designed and synthesized using quaternization and metathesis protocols. The synthesized ILs have been fully characterized by usual spectroscopic methods and screened for their anticancer activities against human cancer cell lines originating from breast and colon cancers. Collectively, our biological data demonstrate that the newly synthesized series has variable anticancer activities in the examined cancer types. The synthesized ILs 8, 10 and 21-29 comprising the methyl and methyl sulfonyl benzothiazole ring emerged as the most potent compounds with promising antiproliferative activities relative to their benzothiazole ring counterparts. Furthermore, the mechanism underlying the observed anticancer activity was investigated. The most active compound 22 appears to exert its anticancer effect through apoptosis dependent pathway in breast cancer cells. Interestingly, compound 22 has also shown good in silico absorption (81.75%) along with high gastro-intestinal absorption as per ADME predictions.

Alternate Ultrasound/Microwave Digestion for Deep Eutectic Hydro-distillation Extraction of Essential Oil and Polysaccharide from Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill

An alternating synergetic ultrasound/microwave method was applied to the simultaneous extraction of essential oils and polysaccharides with deep eutectic solvent (DES) from Schisandra chinensis. Under the optimal conditions, extract in the selected choline chloride-ethylene glycol 1:3 solvent yielded 12.2 mL/kg and 8.56 g/100g of essential oils and polysaccharides, respectively. The free radical scavenging and immunological activities of the polysaccharides and the antioxidant activity of the essential oils have also been investigated. The lymphocyte proliferation capacity was substantially improved by adding concanavalin A or lipopolysaccharides to polysaccharides (0.20 mg/mL). The IC50 values of the essential oils for scavenging DPPH obtained by hydro-distillation and DES ultrasound/microwave-assisted hydro-distillation (DES UMHD) were 52.34 µg/mL and 29.82 µg/mL, respectively. The essential oil obtained by DES UMHD had the highest reducing power (856.05 (TE)/g) at 150 g/mL and had the strongest inhibitory capacity (SC% = 18.12%). S. chinensis has the potential to be developed as a natural antioxidant.
