The Role of (H₂O)1-2 in the CH₂O + ClO Gas-Phase Reaction

The influence of a single water molecule on the reaction of BrO + HO2

The influence of a single water molecule on the BrO + HO2 hydrogen extraction reaction has been explored by taking advantage of CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311 +  + G(d,p) method. The reaction in the absence of water have two distinct kinds of H-extraction channels to generate HOBr + O2 (1Δg) and HBr + O3, and the channel of generation of HOBr + O2 (1Δg) dominated the BrO + HO2 reaction. The rate coefficient of the most feasible channel for the BrO + HO2 reaction in the absence of water is estimated to be 1.44 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298.15 K, which is consistent with the experiment. The introduction of water made the reaction more complex, but the products are unchanged. Four distinct channels, beginning with HO2…H2O with BrO, H2O…HO2 with BrO, BrO…H2O with HO2, H2O…BrO with HO2 are researched. The most feasible channels, stemming from H2O…HO2 with BrO, and BrO…H2O with HO2, are much slower than the reaction of BrO + HO2 without water, respectively. Thus, the existence of water molecule takes a negative catalytic role for BrO + HO2 reaction.

Influence of Water on the Gas-Phase Reaction of Dimethyl Sulfide with BrO in the Marine Boundary Layer

The effect of a single water molecule on the reaction of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) with BrO reaction has been investigated using quantum chemical calculations at the CCSD(T)/6-311++G**//BH&HLYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. Two reaction mechanisms have been considered both in the absence and the presence of water, namely, oxygen atom transfer and hydrogen abstraction, among which the oxygen atom transfer was predominant. Five reaction channels were found in the absence of water, in which the channels starting from the cis-configuration of the pre-reaction complexes were more favorable because of the low energy barrier. The inclusion of water slightly decreased the energy barrier height of most oxygen atom transfer channels, while making the hydrogen abstraction channels more complex. While the effective rate coefficients for the oxygen atom transfer paths are found to have decreased by 3-7 orders of magnitude in the presence of water relative to the water-free reactions, the negligible fraction of reactants that are effectively clustered with water does not significantly change the overall rate of the formation of dimethyl sulfoxide and Br. The present results show that the overall mechanism and rate of the DMS + BrO reaction may not be affected by humidity under atmospheric conditions.

Theoretical Insight into the Reaction Mechanism and Kinetics for the Criegee Intermediate of anti-PhCHOO with SO2

In this study, the density functional theory (DFT) and CCSD(T) method have been performed to gain insight into the possible products and detailed reaction mechanism of the Criegee intermediate (CI) of anti-PhCHOO with SO2 for the first time. The potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been depicted at the UCCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p)//UB3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory with ZPE correction. Two different five-membered ring adducts, viz., endo PhCHOOS(O)O (IM1) and exo PhCHOOS(O)O (IM2) have been found in the entrance of reaction channels. Both direct and indirect reaction pathways from IM1 and IM2 have been considered for the title reaction. Our calculations show that the formation of PhCHO+SO3 (P1) via indirect reaction pathways from IM1 is predominant in all the pathways, and the production of P1 via direct dissociation pathway of IM1 and indirect reaction pathways of IM2 cannot be neglected. Moreover, PhCOOH+SO2 (P2) initiated from IM2 is identified as the minor product. According to the kinetic calculation, the total rate constant for the anti-PhCHOO+SO2 reaction is estimated to be 6.98 × 10−10 cm3·molecule−1·s−1 at 298 K.

Role of (H2O) n (n = 1-2) in the Gas-Phase Reaction of Ethanol with Hydroxyl Radical: Mechanism, Kinetics, and Products

The effect of water on the hydrogen abstraction mechanism and product branching ratio of CH₃CH₂OH + ^•OH reaction has been investigated at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//BH&HLYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory, coupled with the reaction kinetics calculations, implying the harmonic transition-state theory. Depending on the hydrogen sites in CH₃CH₂OH, the bared reaction proceeds through three elementary paths, producing CH₂CH₂OH, CH₃CH₂O, and CH₃CHOH and releasing a water molecule. Thermodynamic and kinetic results indicate that the formation of CH₃CHOH is favored over the temperature range of 216.7-425.0 K. With the inclusion of water, the reaction becomes quite complex, yielding five paths initiated by three channels. The products do not change compared with the bared reaction, but the preference for forming CH₃CHOH drops by up to 2%. In the absence of water, the room temperature rate coefficients for the formation of CH₂CH₂OH, CH₃CH₂O, and CH₃CHOH are computed to be 5.2 × 10^-13, 8.6 × 10^-14, and 9.0 × 10^-11 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1, respectively. The effective rate coefficients of corresponding monohydrated and dihydrated reactions are 3-5 and 6-8 orders of magnitude lower than those of the unhydrated reaction, indicating that water has a decelerating effect on the studied reaction. Overall, the characterized effects of water on the thermodynamics, kinetics, and products of the CH₃CH₂OH + ^•OH reaction will facilitate the understanding of the fate of ethanol and secondary pollutants derived from it.
