Solvent Bar Micro-Extraction of Heavy Metals from Natural Water Samples Using 3-Hydroxy-2-Naphthoate-Based Ionic Liquids

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Contributions of Various Cd(II) Adsorption Mechanisms by Phragmites australis-Activated Carbon Modified with Mannitol

Due to its high toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation in the food chain, controlling cadmium (Cd) pollution in wastewater is urgent. Activated carbon is a popular material for removing Cd. To improve the Cd(II) adsorption efficiency by increasing the number of oxygen-containing functional groups, Phragmites australis-activated carbon (PAAC) was modified with mannitol at a low temperature (150 °C). The textural and chemical characteristics of PAAC and modified PAAC (M-PAAC) were analyzed by surface area analysis, elemental analysis, Boehm's titration, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of Cd(II) concentration, contact time, ionic strength, and pH on Cd(II) adsorption. The main adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II) on activated carbon were quantitatively calculated. The results showed that mannitol modification slightly decreased the S BET (5.30% of PAAC) and increased the content of carboxyl, lactone, and phenolic groups (total increase of 43.96% with PAAC), which enhanced the adsorption capacity of PAAC by 58.59%. The adsorption isotherms of PAAC and M-PAAC were described well using the Temkin model, while the intraparticle diffusion model fitted the Cd(II) adsorption kinetics best. Precipitation with minerals was a crucial factor for Cd(II) adsorption on activated carbon (50.40% for PAAC and 40.41% for M-PAAC). Meanwhile, the Cd(II) adsorption by M-PAAC was also dominated by complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups (33.60%). This research provides a method for recovering wetland plant biomass to prepare activated carbon and efficiently treat Cd-containing wastewater.

Enhanced adsorption of aqueous Pb(II) by modified biochar produced through pyrolysis of watermelon seeds

A biochar (BC) was obtained by the pyrolysis of watermelon seeds (WM) in nitrogen environment. In addition, a modified biochar (HP-BC) was obtained by means of H₂O₂ treatment of BC. Later on, both kinds of biochar (BC and HP-BC) were characterized and compared as regards their potential for Pb(II) adsorption from wastewater. Characterization was performed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Zeta potential analysis, elemental mapping, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pb(II) adsorption characteristics for HP-BC and BC as were evaluated as a function of solution pH, contact time and Pb(II) equilibrium concentration, using kinetic and thermodynamic studies, as well as adsorption isotherms. Regarding kinetics, the pseudo-second order model showed good fitting to experimental data. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacities were calculated as 44.32 mg g^-1 and 60.87 mg g^-1 for BC and HP-BC, respectively. Thermodynamic study indicated that Pb(II) adsorption onto BC and HP-BC was spontaneous and primarily governed by chemisorption and surface complexation. In view of the results, the H₂O₂ modification of the watermelon seeds biochar can be considered as a promising and cost effective approach as regards Pb(II) removal from water/wastewater, which would not cause adverse impacts on the surrounding environments. Overall, it can be seen as a procedure promoting the effective recycling of a waste/by-product, in line of the precepts of the circular economy, aiding to protect human and environmental health.

Facile preparation of sulfonated biochar for highly efficient removal of toxic Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater

Biochar is deemed as the ideal material for the effective removal of heavy metals in wastewater treatment. Herein, we developed a facile one-step solvothermal method for the preparation of sulfonated biochar (SBC) from Axonopus compressus under a low-temperature condition. FTIR and XPS analysis demonstrate that plenty of -OH, -COOH and -SO₃H moieties are generated on the surface of SBC during the sulfonation process. Due to high electronegativity and strong complexation of these moieties, SBC can rapidly adsorb Pb(II) and Cd(II) with capacities of 191.07 and 85.76 mg/g respectively within 5 min. SBC can be reused for 5 cycles with a negligible loss of adsorption capacity. In addition, different biomass-based biochars are prepared under the identical experimental conditions, and they are successfully applied in the treatments of Pb(II) and Cd(II). The satisfying results indicate that one-step low-temperature sulfonation could be a universal method, and various types of biomass waste could be the abundant, effective, economical material source for the treatment of environmental heavy metal pollution in future.

Heavy Metal Extraction under Environmentally Relevant Conditions Using 3-Hydroxy-2-Naphthoate- Based Ionic Liquids: Extraction Capabilities vs. Acute Algal Toxicity

We investigated the applicability of three task-specific ionic liquids (ILs) as heavy metal extracting agents by contrasting extraction capabilities with algal toxicity. The compounds tested were trihexyltetradecylphosphonium-, methyltrioctylphosphonium- and methyltrioctylammonium 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoates. Experiments were performed to assess if these ILs can provide environmentally safe residual concentrations of the target metals after extraction. Both pure water and natural mineral water samples were spiked with 20 µg L−1 of Cu, Ag, Cd, Hg and Pb, respectively. Quantitative extraction (> 99%) of Hg and Ag was achieved. Cu and Hg were below the respective no-observed-effect-concentrations (NOECs) after extraction and Ag below 0.03 µg L−1. Acute toxicity assays were conducted using two freshwater green algae Raphidocelis subcapitata and Tetradesmus obliquus. Growth inhibition and maximum photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II after 72 h were assessed. ILs were less toxic than similar compounds, but still must be classified as acute toxicants for algae. An inhibiting effect on both growth and chlorophyll fluorescence was observed. The leaching of the ILs into the samples remains a limitation regarding their environmental-friendly applicability. Nonetheless, the extremely efficient removal of Cu, Ag and Hg under environmentally relevant conditions calls for further research, which should focus on the immobilization of the ILs.

Radionuclide extraction with different ionic liquids

10 ionic liquids based on 3 different cations and 5 anions were investigated for radionuclide extraction from aqueous solutions. While uranium and 210Po were extracted with satisfying yields irrespective of the feed solution pH, 234Th, 226Ra and 210Pb extraction yields were rather low. The contact time necessary for near to complete extraction was determined as well as the conditions for successful back-extraction. The loading capacities of the ionic liquids for uranium were very high and depended on the uranyl counter-ion. From the leaching of the ionic liquids into the aqueous phase the predominant extraction mechanisms were derived.
