Progress in Research on White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Ultrathin Emitting Layers

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) hold vast prospects in the fields of next-generation displays and solid-state lighting. Ultrathin emitting layers (UEMLs) have become a research hotspot because of their unique advantage. On the basis of simplifying the device structure and preparation process, they can achieve electroluminescent performance comparable to that of doped devices. In this review, we first discuss the working principles and advantages of WOLEDs based on UEML architecture, which can achieve low cost and more flexibility by simplifying the device structure and preparation process. Subsequently, the successful applications of doping and non-doping technologies in fluorescent, phosphorescent, and hybrid WOLEDs combined with UEMLs are discussed, and the operation mechanisms of these WOLEDs are emphasized briefly. We firmly believe that this article will bring new hope for the development of UEML-based WOLEDs in the future.

Hybrid Device of Blue GaN Light-Emitting Diodes and Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Color Tunability for Smart Lighting Sources

A lighting device with a wide color-tunable range is still a challenge for lighting based on either organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) or inorganic LEDs. In this work, we first proposed a novel hybrid device of organic LEDs and inorganic blue GaN LEDs to achieve full white and other colors. Organic LEDs were stacked with green and red emissive layers and connected with blue GaN LEDs in parallel but in opposite polarity voltage. Under the alternate-current (AC) driving, the hybrid structure can be controlled independently by applying timing variable opposite voltages to emit the light from either blue LEDs or the stacked OLEDs for forming mixed colors. The hybrid device can generate white light, varying in a wide range by changing the amplitude and duty ratio (DR) of AC-driving signals, from cold white to standard white and to warm white (3668-11 833 K). When an AC voltage of (4.80 V, -2.45 V) was applied, the device has a high color gamut of 95.24% National Television System Committee (NTSC) and a high color rendering index (R _a) of 92.4%. The novel hybrid device with the blue LED and OLED in opposite polarity exhibits potential applications in smart solid-state lighting, display, and light communication.

2,7(3,6)-Diaryl(arylamino)-substituted Carbazoles as Components of OLEDs: A Review of the Last Decade

Organic light emitting diode (OLED) is a new, promising technology in the field of lighting and display applications due to the advantages offered by its organic electroactive derivatives over inorganic materials. OLEDs have prompted a great deal of investigations within academia as well as in industry because of their potential applications. The electroactive layers of OLEDs can be fabricated from low molecular weight derivatives by vapor deposition or from polymers by spin coating from their solution. Among the low-molar-mass compounds under investigation in this field, carbazole-based materials have been studied at length for their useful chemical and electronic characteristics. The carbazole is an electron-rich heterocyclic compound, whose structure can be easily modified by rather simple reactions in order to obtain 2,7(3,6)-diaryl(arylamino)-substituted carbazoles. The substituted derivatives are widely used for the formation of OLEDs due to their good charge carrier injection and transfer characteristics, electroluminescence, thermally activated delayed fluorescence, improved thermal and morphological stability as well as their thin film forming characteristics. On the other hand, relatively high triplet energies of some substituted carbazole-based compounds make them useful components as host materials even for wide bandgap triplet emitters. The present review focuses on 2,7(3,6)-diaryl(arylamino)-substituted carbazoles, which were described in the last decade and were applied as charge-transporting layers, fluorescent and phosphorescent emitters as well as host materials for OLED devices.

Advances in Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes Possessing Improved Lifetime

Recently, perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are seeing an increasing academic and industrial interest with a potential for a broad range of technologies including display, lighting, and signaling. The maximum external quantum efficiency of PeLEDs can overtake 20% nowadays, however, the lifetime of PeLEDs is still far from the demand of practical applications. In this review, state-of-the-art concepts to improve the lifetime of PeLEDs are comprehensively summarized from the perspective of the design of perovskite emitting materials, the innovation of device engineering, the manipulation of optical effects, and the introduction of advanced encapsulations. First, the fundamental concepts determining the lifetime of PeLEDs are presented. Then, the strategies to improve the lifetime of both organic-inorganic hybrid and all-inorganic PeLEDs are highlighted. Particularly, the approaches to manage optical effects and encapsulations for the improved lifetime, which are negligibly studied in PeLEDs, are discussed based on the related concepts of organic LEDs and Cd-based quantum-dot LEDs, which is beneficial to insightfully understand the lifetime of PeLEDs. At last, the challenges and opportunities to further enhance the lifetime of PeLEDs are introduced.

Flow Photochemistry as a Tool in Organic Synthesis

Photochemical transformations of molecular building blocks have become an important and widely recognized research field in the past decade. Detailed and deep understanding of novel photochemical catalysts and reaction concepts with visible light as the energy source has enabled a broad application portfolio for synthetic organic chemistry. In parallel, continuous-flow chemistry and microreaction technology have become the basis for thinking and doing chemistry in a novel fashion with clear focus on improved process control for higher conversion and selectivity. As can be seen by the large number of scientific publications on flow photochemistry in the recent past, both research topics have found each other as exceptionally well-suited counterparts with high synergy by combining chemistry and technology. This review will give an overview on selected reaction classes, which represent important photochemical transformations in synthetic organic chemistry, and which benefit from mild and defined process conditions by the transfer from batch to continuous-flow mode.

Site-Selective, Multistep Functionalizations of CO2-Based Hyperbranched Poly(alkynoate)s toward Functional Polymetric Materials

Hyperbranched polymers constructed from CO2 possess unique architectures and properties; however, they are difficult to prepare. In this work, CO2-based, hyperbranched poly(alkynoate)s (hb-PAs) with high molecular weights and degrees of branching are facilely prepared under atmospheric pressure in only 3 h. Because hb-PAs possess two types of ethynyl groups with different reactivities, they can undergo site-selective, three-step functionalizations with nearly 100% conversion in each step. Taking advantage of this unique feature, functional hb-PAs with versatile properties are constructed that could be selectively tailored to contain hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) chains in their branched chains, on their periphery, or both via tandem polymerizations. Hyperbranched polyprodrug amphiphiles with high drug loading content (44.3 wt%) are also generated, along with an artificial light-harvesting system with high energy transfer efficiency (up to 92%) and white-light-emitting polymers. This work not only provides an efficient pathway to convert CO2 into hyperbranched polymers, but also offers an effective platform for site-selective multistep functionalizations toward functional polymeric materials.

Emergence of Impurity-Doped Nanocrystal Light-Emitting Diodes

In recent years, impurity-doped nanocrystal light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have aroused both academic and industrial interest since they are highly promising to satisfy the increasing demand of display, lighting, and signaling technologies. Compared with undoped counterparts, impurity-doped nanocrystal LEDs have been demonstrated to possess many extraordinary characteristics including enhanced efficiency, increased luminance, reduced voltage, and prolonged stability. In this review, recent state-of-the-art concepts to achieve high-performance impurity-doped nanocrystal LEDs are summarized. Firstly, the fundamental concepts of impurity-doped nanocrystal LEDs are presented. Then, the strategies to enhance the performance of impurity-doped nanocrystal LEDs via both material design and device engineering are introduced. In particular, the emergence of three types of impurity-doped nanocrystal LEDs is comprehensively highlighted, namely impurity-doped colloidal quantum dot LEDs, impurity-doped perovskite LEDs, and impurity-doped colloidal quantum well LEDs. At last, the challenges and the opportunities to further improve the performance of impurity-doped nanocrystal LEDs are described.

Device Engineering for All-Inorganic Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Recently, all-inorganic perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted both academic and industrial interest thanks to their outstanding properties, such as high efficiency, bright luminance, excellent color purity, low cost and potentially good operational stability. Apart from the design and treatment of all-inorganic emitters, the device engineering is another significant factor to guarantee the high performance. In this review, we have summarized the state-of-the-art concepts for device engineering in all-inorganic PeLEDs, where the charge injection, transport, balance and leakage play a critical role in the performance. First, we have described the fundamental concepts of all-inorganic PeLEDs. Then, we have introduced the enhancement of device engineering in all-inorganic PeLEDs. Particularly, we have comprehensively highlighted the emergence of all-inorganic PeLEDs, strategies to improve the hole injection, approaches to enhance the electron injection, schemes to increase the charge balance and methods to decrease the charge leakage. Finally, we have clarified the issues and ways to further enhance the performance of all-inorganic PeLEDs.

Emergence of Flexible White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Flexible white organic light-emitting diodes (FWOLEDs) have considerable potential to meet the rapidly growing requirements of display and lighting commercialization. To achieve high-performance FWOLEDs, (i) the selection of effective flexible substrates, (ii) the use of transparent conducting electrodes, (iii) the introduction of efficient device architectures, and iv) the exploitation of advanced outcoupling techniques are necessary. In this review, recent state-of-the-art strategies to develop FWOLEDs have been summarized. Firstly, the fundamental concepts of FWOLEDs have been described. Then, the primary approaches to realize FWOLEDs have been introduced. Particularly, the effects of flexible substrates, conducting electrodes, device architectures, and outcoupling techniques in FWOLEDs have been comprehensively highlighted. Finally, issues and ways to further enhance the performance of FWOLEDs have been briefly clarified.
