Nanomaterials Based on Fe3O4 and Phthalocyanines Derived from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid

The windmill, the dragon, and the frog: geometry control over the spectral, magnetic, and electrochemical properties of cobalt phthalocyanine regioisomers

For the first time, we have prepared non-aggregating phthalocyanine cobalt complexes as a set of resolved positional isomers. These compounds comprise a unique test bed for the structure-properties studies, as their optical and electrochemical properties are influenced by the planarity of the phthalocyanine macrocycle, which can be controlled by the positional isomerism of the bulky aromatic substituents at the α-phthalo sites. We support our conclusions with molecular modelling studies, which show a perfect match between the calculated and experimentally determined spectral/electrochemical values. We challenge a common perception that the NMR spectra of cobalt phthalocyanines cannot be measured due to the paramagnetic nature of Co(II). We suggest instead that the key factors affecting the NMR spectral resolution are molecular aggregation and π-π stacking. These interactions are suppressed by the bulky peripheral substituents on the cobalt phthalocyanines prepared, making these isomeric compounds an excellent tool for paramagnetic NMR studies.

Advances in Nanomaterials Based on Cashew Nut Shell Liquid

Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), obtained as a byproduct of the cashew industry, represents an important natural source of phenolic compounds, with important environmental benefits due to the large availability and low cost of the unique renewable starting material, that can be used as an alternative to synthetic substances in many industrial applications. The peculiarity of the functional groups of CNSL components, such as phenolic hydroxyl, the aromatic ring, acid functionality, and unsaturation(s) in the C15 alkyl side chain, permitted the design of interesting nanostructures. Cardanol (CA), anacardic acid (AA), and cardol (CD), opportunely isolated from CNSL, served as building blocks for generating an amazing class of nanomaterials with chemical, physical, and morphological properties that can be tuned in view of their applications, particularly focused on their bioactive properties.

Performance of Eversa Transform 2.0 Lipase in Ester Production Using Babassu Oil (Orbignya sp.) and Tucuman Oil (Astrocaryum vulgar): A Comparative Study between Liquid and Immobilized Forms in Fe3O4 Nanoparticles

In this study, biodiesel was produced through the enzymatic esterification of vegetable oils from two common Brazilian palm trees: babassu and tucuman. The oils were hydrolyzed by a chemical route and their free fatty acids esterified with ethanol and methanol using the lipase enzyme Eversa® Transform 2.0 in free forms and supported in iron magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) (enzymatic load: 80 UpNPBg−1). These enzymatic reactions were performed at an oil–alcohol molar ratio of 1:1, reaction temperature of 37 °C, agitation at 150 rpm, and reaction times of 2, 4, 6 and 8 h for the reactions catalyzed by the soluble enzyme and 8 h for the reactions using the biocatalyst. The conversions of fatty acids in ethyl and methyl esters obtained were monitored by gas chromatography (CG). The results obtained from ester synthesis using enzyme catalysts in free form were better: babassu 52.6% (methanol) and 57.5% (ethanol), and for tucuman 96.7% (methanol) and 93.4% (ethanol). In the case of immobilized enzymes, the results obtained ranged from 68.7% to 82.2% for babassu and from 32.5% to 86.0% for tucuman, with three cycles of reuse and without significant catalyst loss. Molecular coupling studies revealed the structures of lipase and that linoleic acid bonded near the active site of the enzyme with the best free energy of −6.5 Kcal/mol.

A methanol extract and N,N-dimethyltryptamine from Psychotria viridis Ruiz & Pav. inhibit Zika virus infection in vitro

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a public health problem due to its association with serious fetal and neurological complications and the lack of antiviral agents and licensed vaccines against this virus. Surveillance studies have alerted about the potential occurrence of a new South American epidemic episode due to the recent circulation of an African ZIKV strain detected in Brazil. Therefore, it is essential to discover antiviral agents, including natural substances, that are capable of neutralizing the action of ZIKV. Several Psychotria species have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, a methanol extract and dimethyltryptamine from Psychotria viridis were evaluated for their ability to inhibit ZIKV infection in vitro by measuring the effective concentration that protects 50% of cells and investigating their possible mechanisms of action. The tested samples showed antiviral activity against ZIKV. The extract showed virucidal activity, affecting viral and non-cellular elements, inactivating the virus before infection or when it becomes extracellular after the second cycle of infection. It was also observed that both extract and dimethyltryptamine could inhibit the virus at intracellular stages of the viral cycle. In addition to dimethyltryptamine, it is believed that other compounds also contribute to the promising virucidal effect observed for the methanol extract. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the activity of a methanolic extract and dimethyltryptamine from Psychotria viridis against cellular ZIKV infection. These two samples, extracted from natural sources, are potential candidates for use as antiviral drugs to inhibit ZIKV infections.

Application of FTIR-ATR spectroscopy to confirm the microwave assisted synthesis and curing of Cashew nut shell liquid derived nanostructured materials

The present work reports the development of nanostructured material from Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL, an agro byproduct of cashew industry, 87% cardanol) to evaluate their potential in antibacterial applications as a substitute of petroleum feedstock via an energy-efficient method. The nanostructured material was synthesized by coordination polymerization reaction of cardanol and divalent Mn(II) salt with the aid of microwave irradiations. FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm the proposed structure of the synthesized materials. FTIR-ATR spectroscopy was employed to verify the curing of material by comparing the spectra of the cured samples with the frequencies of uncured samples. Magnetic moment and UV-visible spectroscopy were used to confirm the proposed structure of the material further. Morphology of the synthesized material was investigated by XRD, optical microscopy, SEM and TEM and thermal behaviour by TGA/DTG/DSC technique. Agar diffusion method was utilized to investigate the antibacterial activity of the synthesized material against bacterial strains E. coli, K. pneumoniae, B. subtilis and S. aureus. N₂ adsorption-desorption was investigated to check BET specific surface area and BJH pore size distribution of the same. The results revealed that the synthesized materials were obtained as semicrystalline, porous, thermally stable and nanostructured film forming materials with moderate to good antibacterial activity against different nosocomial bacteria. They can be used as thermally stable antibacterial agents in the field of films/coatings for health care applications.
