Fabrication and Characterization of Microcellular Polyurethane Sisal Biocomposites

Removal of malachite green from wastewater using date seeds as natural adsorbent; isotherms, kinetics, Thermodynamic, and batch adsorption process design

This research explores the feasibility of using date seeds (DS), an agricultural waste, for the adsorption of malachite green (MG) dye from synthesized wastewater. The characterization of the DS before and after adsorption was accomplished by FTIR, SEM, BET, and EDX measurements. Batch adsorption experiments were investigated for MG dye adsorption from aqueous solution onto the DS. The effect of different parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, temperature, and the initial dye concentration were studied. The optimum pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and contact time for the dye removal were found to be 5, 0.1 g, 25 °C, and 30 min, respectively. The equilibrium studies for the data with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms showed that Freundlich isotherm is the best model to describe the adsorption of MG onto the DS particles which has a heterogeneous surface. It was found that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model which revealed that the intra-particle diffusion stage is the rate-controlling stage for the process. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔS, and ΔH suggest the possibility of chemisorption and physisorption simultaneously and indicate the exothermic and spontaneous characters of the adsorption of MG dye on DS with negative values of ΔH and ΔG.

Novel Sustainable Castor Oil-Based Polyurethane Biocomposites Reinforced with Piassava Fiber Powder Waste for High-Performance Coating Floor

The search for new greener materials that contribute to a more sustainable world motivated the present study in which novel biocomposites with 10, 20 and 30 vol% of piassava fiber powder waste reinforcing castor oil-based polyurethane (COPU) intended for a high-performance coated floor (HPCF) were developed. The novel biocomposites were characterized by flexural, Izod impact and wear standard tests as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and fracture analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both flexural modulus and strength displayed marked increases reaching more than 800 and 500%, respectively, compared to plain COPU for 30 vol% piassava powder incorporation. FTIR bands indicated the existence of interaction between the piassava constituents and COPU. However, SEM fractographs disclosed the presence of bubbles attributed to retained gases during the COPU curing. Consequently, the Izod impact resistance showed a 50% decrease while the wear was more than three times accentuated for 30 vol% piassava powder biocomposite. These results met the specified values of corresponding standards and revealed a promising new greener material for HPCFs.

Research of Wood Waste as a Potential Filler for Loose-Fill Building Insulation: Appropriate Selection and Incorporation into Polyurethane Biocomposite Foams

Currently, the recycling potential of wood waste (WW) is still limited, and in a resource efficiency approach, recycling WW in insulation materials, such as polyurethane (PUR), appears as an appropriate solution. It is known that the quality of WW is the main aspect which influences the stability of the final products. Therefore, the current study analyses different WW-based fillers as possible modifiers for polyurethane biocomposite foams for the application as loose-fill materials in building envelopes. During the study of WW-based fillers, it was determined that the most promising filler is wood scobs (WS) with a thermal conductivity of 0.0496 W/m·K, short-term water absorption by partial immersion—12.5 kg/m², water vapour resistance—0.34 m²·h·Pa/mg and water vapour diffusion resistance factor—2.4. In order to evaluate the WS performance as a filler in PUR biocomposite foams, different ratios of PUR binder and WS filler (PURb/WS) were selected. It was found that a 0.40 PURb/WS ratio is insufficient for the appropriate wetting of WS filler while a 0.70 PURb/WS ratio produced PUR biocomposite foams with the most suitable performance: thermal conductivity reduced from 0.0523 to 0.0476 W/m·K, water absorption—from 5.6 to 1.3 kg/m², while the compressive strength increased from 142 to 272 kPa and the tensile strength increased from 44 to 272 kPa.

Preparation and characterization of diatomite and hydroxyapatite reinforced porous polyurethane foam biocomposites

Porous three-dimensional (3D) polyurethane-based biocomposites were produced utilizing diatomite and hydroxyapatite as fillers. Diatomite and Hydroxyapatite (HA) were utilized to reinforce the morphological, chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of polyurethane foam (PUF). Diatomite and Hydroxyapatite were added into polyurethane at variable percentages 0, 1, 2, and 5. The mechanical properties of PUF were analyzed by the compression test. According to the compression test results, the compressive strength of the polyurethane foam is highest in the reinforced foam at 1% by weight hydroxyapatite compared to other reinforced PUFs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images presented structural differences on foam by adding fillers. Functional groups of PUF were defined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the thermal behavior of PUF was studied with Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The obtained results revealed that PUF/HA biocomposites indicated higher thermal degradation than PUF/Diatomite biocomposites.
