UV/Vis Light Induced Degradation of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride Mediated byCo-TiO2 Nanoparticles

Preparation of honokiol-loaded titanium dioxide nanotube drug delivery system and its effect on CAL-27 cells

Background: Tongue cancer is the most common type of oral cancer, and patients have a poor prognosis and quality of life after conventional surgical treatment. Honokiol (HNK) is a kind of lignan extracted from Chinese herbal medicine Houpu, many domestic and international experiments have demonstrated its anti-tumor effect. Titanium dioxide nanotube (TNTs) is a kind of nanomaterial which can be used as drug carrier. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of HNK-loaded TNTs delivery system (HNK-TNTs) on anti-tumor. Methods: TNTs were prepared by anodic oxidation method, and HNK was loaded onto TNTs by physical adsorption. The effect of HNK-TNTs on the proliferation, migration and apoptosis of CAL-27 cells were explored by CCK-8 experiment, scratch assay, live and dead staining and cellular immunofluorescence analysis. Results: The material characterization test results showed that we had successfully prepared HNK-TNTs. CCK-8 experiment, scratch assay showed that the proliferation and migration ability of CAL-27 cells were significantly weakened after treatment with HNK-TNTs, and their cell proliferation rates significantly decreased. Live/dead staining, cell immunofluorescence analysis showed that HNK-TNTs could promote CAL-27 cells apoptosis by increasing the expression levels of the apoptosis-related protein Bax and Fas. Conclusion: In this experiment, we had successfully prepared Honokiol-loaded titanium dioxide nanotube drug delivery system (HNK-TNTs) and compared the effects of single drug HNK and HNK-TNTs on the proliferation, apoptosis and migration of tongue cancer CAL-27 cells. This experiment showed that HNK-TNTs had greater anti-proliferative, apoptosis-promoting and migration-inhibiting effects than the HNK as a single drug.

Co- and Ni-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles Supported on Zeolite Y with Photocatalytic Properties

Zeolite Y samples with microporous and hierarchical structures containing Ti-Ni and Ti-Co oxides were obtained as active photocatalysts. Different Ti amounts (5, 10% TiO2) were supported, followed by the loading of Ni or Co oxides (5%). X-ray diffraction evidenced the presence of TiO2 as an anatase. N2 adsorption-desorption results showed type IV isotherms for hierarchical zeolite Y samples, and a combination of type IV and I isotherms for zeolite Y samples. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra showed a shift in the absorption band to visible with increasing Ti loading and especially after Co and Ni addition. A significant effect of the support was evidenced for Ti and its interaction with Co/Ni species. The zeolite Y support stabilized Ti in the 4+ oxidation state while hierarchical zeolite Y support favored the formation of Ti3+ species, Ni0 and Ni2+ and the oxidation of Co to 3+ oxidation state. Photocatalytic activity, under UV and visible light irradiation, was evaluated by the degradation of amoxicillin, used as a model test. The photocatalytic mechanism was investigated using ethanol, p-benzoquinone and KI as ·OH and ·O2- radicals and hole (h+) scavengers. The best results were obtained for the immobilized Ni-Ti species on the hierarchical zeolite Y support.

Copper-/Zinc-Doped TiO2 Nanopowders Synthesized by Microwave-Assisted Sol-Gel Method

Using the microwave-assisted sol-gel method, Zn- and Cu-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles with an anatase crystalline structure were prepared. Titanium (IV) butoxide was used as a TiO₂ precursor, with parental alcohol as a solvent and ammonia water as a catalyst. Based on the TG/DTA results, the powders were thermally treated at 500 °C. XRD and XRF revealed the presence of a single-phase anatase and dopants in the thermally treated nanoparticles. The surface of the nanoparticles and the oxidation states of the elements were studied using XPS, which confirmed the presence of Ti, O, Zn, and Cu. The photocatalytic activity of the doped TiO₂ nanopowders was tested for the degradation of methyl-orange (MO) dye. The results indicate that Cu doping increases the photoactivity of TiO₂ in the visible-light range by narrowing the band-gap energy.

Identification of Reactive Oxygen Species and Mechanism on Visible Light-Induced Photosensitized Degradation of Oxytetracycline

This study investigated the photolysis and TiO₂-assisted photosensitized degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible light, the active reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the degradation mechanisms in these two reactions. The results show that the deprotonated OTC could be photolyzed more easily under visible light because of the redshift of its absorption spectrum at high pH values. Due to the TiO₂-assisted self-photosensitized degradation of OTC, OTC removal in the visible light/TiO₂ system was more efficient with the addition of TiO₂, as demonstrated when TiO₂ was replaced with insulator SiO₂. The study's ROS scavenging experiments show that superoxide radical anion (O₂^•-) ROS was most responsible for the self-sensitized degradation of OTC in both reactions. OTC degradation under the visible light/TiO₂ system was enhanced with increasing TiO₂ load, while the elimination of total organic carbon (TOC) was very limited after 5 h of visible light irradiation. Based on the eight identified transformation products found, five potential reaction mechanisms, including hydroxylation, quinonization, decarbonylation, de-methylation, and dehydration, were proposed for the photolytic and TiO₂-assisted photosensitized degradation mechanisms of OTC under visible light. This study indicates that OTC can degrade under visible light with or without a semiconductor when conditions are suitable.

Improving the valence self-reversible conversion of cerium nanoparticles on titanium implants by lanthanum doping to enhance ROS elimination and osteogenesis

Equipped with anti-oxidative properties, cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) are gradually being adopted over the years in the field of oxidative stress research. However, the effects of CNPs may be diminished when under the influence of prolonged and substantially elevated levels of oxidative stress. Therefore, it is imperative to enhance the efficacy of CNPs to resist oxidative stress. In this study, our approach involves the fabrication of titanium surface CNPs coatings doped with different concentrations of lanthanum ions (La³⁺) and the investigation of their local anti-oxidative stress potential. The physicochemical characterization showed that the La-CNPs groups had a substantial increase in the generation of oxygen vacancies within the CNPs structure with the increase of La doping concentration. In vitro findings proofed that the cytocompatibility of different La-CNPs coatings showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing with the increase of La doping concentration under oxidative stress microenvironment. Among these groups, the 30 % La-CNPs group presented the best cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation which could activate the FoxO1 pathway, then upregulated the expression of SOD1 and CAT, and finally resulted in the inhibition of ROS production. In vivo results further confirmed that the 30 % La-CNPs group showed significant osteogenic effects in two rat models (osteoporosis and diabetes models). In conclusion, we believe that the 30 % La-CNPs coating holds promising potential for its implant applications in patients with oxidative stress-related diseases.

A study of the effect of reactive oxygen species induced by violet and blue light from oxytetracycline on the deactivation of Escherichia coli

Oxytetracycline (OTC), a tetracycline antibiotic, is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. In this investigation, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is utilized to determine the effects of blue light (λ = 448 nm) illumination (BLIA) and violet light (λ = 403 nm) illumination (VLIA) on conformational changes in OTC at pH 7.8. The photochemical effect of OTC that is exposed to BLIA and VLIA on the deactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) is studied. The deactivation of E. coli has an insignificant effect on treatment with OTC alone. OTC is relatively unstable under BLIA and VLIA illumination in an alkaline solution, and OTC has been shown to inactivate E. coli by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Less anionic superoxide radicals (O₂^•-) are generated from OTC that is treated with BLIA than that from VLIA treatment, so OTC is more efficient in inactivating E. coli under VLIA. Inactivation of reduction rates of 0.51 and 3.65 logs in E. coli are achieved using 0.1 mM OTC under BLIA for 120 min and VLIA for 30 min, respectively, under the same illumination intensity (20 W/m²). Two photolytic products of OTC (PPOs) are produced when OTC is exposed to BLIA and VLIA, with molecular ions at m/z 447 and 431, molecular formulae C₂₁H₂₂N₂O₉ and C₂₁H₂₂N₂O₈, and masses of 446.44 and 430.44 g/mol, respectively. The results show that when exposed to VLIA, OTC exhibits enhanced inactivation of E. coli, suggesting that the photochemical treatment of OTC is a potential supplement in a hygienic process.

Nanophotocatalysis for the Removal of Pharmaceutical Residues from Water Bodies: State of Art and Recent Trends

Background:

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in surface and drinking water is ubiquitous and is a major concern of researchers. These compounds cause a destructive impact on aquatic and terrestrial life forms, and the removal of these compounds from the environment is a challenging issue. Existent conventional wastewater treatment processes are generally inefficacious because of their low degradation efficiency and inadequate techniques associated with the disposal of adsorbed pollutants during comparatively effective methods like the adsorption process.

Remediation Method:

Semiconductor-mediated photocatalysis is an attractive technology for the efficient removal of pharmaceutical compounds. Among various semiconductors, TiO2 and ZnObased photocatalysts gained much interest during the last years because of their efficiency in decomposing and mineralizing the lethal organic pollutants with the utilization of UV-visible light. Incessant efforts are being undertaken for tuning the physicochemical, optical, and electronic properties of these photocatalysts to strengthen their overall photocatalytic performance with good recycling efficiency.

Results:

This review attempts to showcase the recent progress in the rational design and fabrication of nanosized TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts for the removal of pollutants derived from the pharmaceutical industry and hospital wastes.

Conclusion:

Photocatalysis involving TiO2 and ZnO provides a positive impact on pollution management and could be successfully applied to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater streams. Structure modifications, the introduction of heteroatoms, and the integration of polymers with these nano photocatalysts offer leapfrogging opportunities for broader applications in the field of photocatalysis.

Facile Synthesis of Potassium-Doped Titanium Oxide Nanostructure (KTiOxs)/AlO(OH) Composites for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Generally, nanoparticles (NPs) are used as photocatalysts, which sometimes results in difficulties in the separation and recycling of photocatalysts from suspensions after their application in water and wastewater treatment, which hinders industrial applications of NPs that are too fine to be removed by gravitational settling. This can be solved by using support NPs to overcome these problems. -OH enrich AlO(OH), which is produced by a steam coating process, has been could be used as a possible support, because the -OH groups on the surface can interact with foreign molecules; thus, various composite functional materials can be prepared. Potassium doped titanium oxide NPs, which are produced by a wet corrosion process, namely KTiOxs, have been selected as photocatalysts, because KTiOxs have sufficient K+ ions, thereby expecting the chemical bonding with -OH group from AlO(OH). This study fabricated a novel photocataysis system made by combining KTiOxs as catalysts and AlO(OH) as the catalysts’ support, namely KTiOxs/AlO(OH) composites. The KTiOxs nanowires, obtained from 10 mol/L of a KOH solution treated with Ti and AlO(OH) at 280 °C for 24 h through a steam coating process, yielded the highest surface area and the highest photocatalytic performance.

Degradation of Oxytetracycline in Aqueous Solutions: Application of Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Advanced Oxidative Processes

Oxytetracycline is one of the antibiotics most frequently used in the Shrimp Industry during the control of bacterial diseases. These emerging pollutants, which appear in low concentrations, are persistent and alternative treatments and are required for their elimination. The degradation of oxytetracycline was evaluated in an aqueous solution by applying homogeneous (UV/H2O2 and photo-Fenton) and heterogeneous (UV/TiO2/H2O2) advanced oxidative processes (AOPs). The studies were carried out using a bench reactor with short-wave ultraviolet lamps (UV-C). We quantified the extent to which the degradation of the drug had been efficient by employing highly efficient liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a PDA detector with a wavelength of 354 nm and a C18 column. The best results were obtained when applying the UV/H2O2 treatment, which attained a degradation of 97% under the initial conditions of a dose of 8 µL of H2O2 and 120 min of radiation. The pseudo-first order kinetic model proposed by Chan and Chu showed that the experimental results had an adequate fit, with values greater than R2 ≥ 0.95. Toxicity tests were applied to verify the effect of AOPs employed, when the drug was present in low concentrations. The test results demonstrated a decrease in the root growth of the species Lactuca sativa and Daucus carota.
