Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials are attracting great attention in biomedical fields such as sensors, bioimaging, and cancer treatment, et al. due to their strong fluorescence emission in the aggregated state. In this contribution, a series of tetraphenylene-acetonitrile AIE compounds with D-A-D' structures were synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction and Knoevenagel condensation, and their relationship of chemical structure and fluorescence properties was investigated in detail, among which TPPA compound was selected as the monomer owing to the longest emission wavelength at about 530 nm with low energy band gap ΔE 3.09 eV of neutral TPPA and 1.43 eV of protonated TPPA. Novel amphiphilic AIE PEG-TA copolymers were prepared by RAFT polymerization of TPPA and PEGMA with about 1.44×104 Mw and narrow PDI, and the molar ratio of TPPA in the PEG-TA1 and PEG-TA2 copolymers was about 23.4 % and 29.6 %. The as-prepared PEG-TA copolymers would self-assembled in aqueous solution to form core-shell structures with a diameter of 150-200 nm, and their emission wavelength could reversibly convert from 545 nm to 650 nm with excellent pH sensitivity. The CLSM images showed that the PEG-TA FONs and PTX drugs-loaded PTX-TA FONs could be endocytosed by cells and mainly enriched in the cytoplasm, and CCK-8 results showed that the PEG-TA FONs had excellent biocompatibility but PTX-TA FONs had high inhibition ratio for A549 cells, moreover, the flow cytometry also showed that PTX-TA FONs could result in the apoptosis of A549 cells with some extent anti-tumor effect.

Abstract
Water-soluble smart materials with multi-stimuli-responsiveness and ultra-long room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have garnered broad attention. Herein, a water-soluble terpyridine zinc complex (MeO-Tpy-Zn-OAc), featuring a simple donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structure is presented, which responds to a variety of stimuli, including changes in solvents, pH, temperature, and the addition of amino acids. Notably, MeO-Tpy-Zn-OAc functions as a fluorescence probe, capable of visually and selectively discriminating aspartate or histidine among other common amino acids in water. Additionally, when incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form the composite MeO-Tpy-Zn-OAc@PVA, the material exhibits reversible writing, photochromism, and a prolonged RTP with a 14 s afterglow. These unique properties enable the composite to be utilized in potential applications such as secure data encryption and inkless printing.

Abstract
Mercury ion is one of the most harmful metal ions with significant hazards to the environment and human health. Thus, the development of innovative, sensitive, and selective sensors to help address the detrimental impacts of heavy metal contamination is necessary. In this work, we present three new chemosensors based on the deprotection reaction of the thioacetal group for distinguishing Hg2+ in environmental samples. These chemosensors show good photophysical properties with high quantum yield in aqueous medium. These prepared chemosensors were employed as fluorometric sensors for the determination of Hg2+ through the quenching of fluorescence emission due to the Hg2+-induced hydrolysis of the thioacetal to the aldehyde group. In the presence of Hg2+, chemosensors showed an emissive color transformation from blue fluorescence to non-fluorescence under UV light, which was readily seen by the visual eye. These chemosensors also exhibited highly distinctive selectivity toward Hg2+ over other interfering metal ions, with detection limits of 1.1 ppb, 13.4 ppb, and 12.7 ppb. Moreover, the practical applicability of chemosensor was successfully demonstrated in real water samples and herb extract samples.

Abstract
The combined effects of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena have demonstrated a significant influence on excited-state chemistry. These combined TICT and AIE features have been extensively utilized to enhance photodynamic and photothermal therapy. Herein, we demonstrated the synergistic capabilities of TICT and AIE phenomena in the design of the photoremovable protecting group (PRPG), namely, NMe2-Napy-BF2. This innovative PRPG incorporates TICT and AIE characteristics, resulting in four remarkable properties: (i) red-shifted absorption wavelength, (ii) strong near-infrared (NIR) emission, (iii) viscosity-sensitive emission property, and (iv) accelerated photorelease rate. Inspired by these intriguing attributes, we developed a nanodrug delivery system (nano-DDS) using our PRPG for cancer treatment. In vitro studies showed that our nano-DDS manifested effective cellular internalization, specific staining of cancer cells, high-resolution confocal imaging of cancerous cells in the NIR region, and controlled release of the anticancer drug chlorambucil upon exposure to light, leading to cancer cell eradication. Most notably, our nano-DDS exhibited a substantially increased two-photon (TP) absorption cross section (435 GM), exhibiting its potential for in vivo applications. This development holds promise for significant advancements in cancer treatment strategies.

Abstract
Two fluorescent probes, Y1-2 were synthesized from 2-acetonaphthone, 4-acetylbiphenyl, and phenyl hydrazine by Vilsmeier-Haack reaction and Knoevenagel condensation. Their recognition efficacies for N2H4 were tested by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The recognition mechanism were studies by density-functional theory calculations, and the effect of pH on N2H4 recognition was also studied. The results showed that the probe Y1-2 has high selectivity and a low detection limit for N2H4, and the recognition of N2H4 can be accomplished at physiological pH. The probes have had obvious aggregation-induced luminescence effect, large Stokes shift, high sensitivity, and can be successfully applied to live cell imaging.

Abstract
Due to the excellent characteristics of fluorescence-based imaging, such as non-invasive detection of biomarkers in vitro and in vivo with high sensitivity, good spatio-temporal resolution and fast response times, it has shown significant prospects in various applications. Compounds with both biological activities and fluorescent properties have the potential for integrated diagnosis and treatment application. Alectinib and Rilpivirine are two excellent drugs on sale that represent a clinically approved targeted therapy for ALK-rearranged NSCLC and have exhibited more favorable safety and tolerance profiles in Phase III clinical trials, ECHO and THRIVE, respectively. The optical properties of these two drugs, Alectinib and Rilpivirine, were deeply explored, firstly through the simulation of molecular structures, electrostatic potential, OPA/TPA and emission spectral properties and experiments on UV-vis spectra, fluorescence and cell imaging. It was found that Alectinib exhibited 7.8% of fluorescence quantum yield at the 450 nm excited wavelength, due to a larger electronic transition dipole moment (8.41 Debye), bigger charge transition quantity (0.682 e) and smaller reorganization energy (2821.6 cm-1). The stronger UV-vis spectra of Rilpivirine were due to a larger electron-hole overlap index (Sr: 0.733) and were also seen in CDD plots. Furthermore, Alectinib possessed obvious active two-photon absorption properties (δmaxTPA* ϕ = 201.75 GM), which have potential TPA imaging applications in bio-systems. Lastly, Alectinib and Rilpivirine displayed green fluorescence in HeLa cells, suggesting the potential ability for biological imaging. Investigation using theoretical and experimental methods is certainly encouraged, given the particular significance of developing integrated diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Chemical structures bearing a combination of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties attracted the attention of many researchers. Recently, there is an increasing demand to pose tunable AIEE and ICT fluorophores that could present their conformation changes-related emission colors by adjusting the medium polarity. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of 4-alkoxyphenyl-substituted 1,8-naphthalic anhydride derivatives NAxC using the Suzuki coupling reaction to construct donor-acceptor (D-A)-type fluorophores with alkoxyl substituents of varying carbon chain lengths (x = 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 in NAxC). To explain the observation that molecules with longer carbon chains revealed unusual fluorescence enhancement in water, we study the optical properties and evaluate their locally excited (LE) and ICT states by solvent effects combined with Lippert-Mataga plots. Then, we explored the self-assembly abilities of these molecules in water-organic (W/O) mixed solutions and observed the morphology of its nanostructure using a fluorescence microscope and SEM. The results show that NAxC, x = 4, 6, 12 show different degrees of self-assembly behaviors and corresponding aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) progresses. At the same time, different nanostructures and corresponding spectral changes can be obtained by adjusting the water ratio in the mixed solution. That is, NAxC compounds present different transitions between LE, ICT and AIEE based on the polarity, water ratio and time changes. We designed NAxC as the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of the surfactant to demonstrate that AIEE comes from the formation of micelle-like nanoaggregates, which causes a restriction of the transfer from the LE state to the ICT state, and micelle formation results in a blue-shift in emission and enhances the intensity in the aggregate state. Among them, NA12C is most likely to form micelles and the most obvious fluorescence enhancement, which will switch over time due to the nano-aggregation transition.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent sensor BTAE-PA containing two tetrarylethylene (TAE) units linked through pyrimidine-2-amine was prepared, and its optical properties were systematically studied. BTAE-PA exhibited a typical aggregation-induced emission enhancement behavior, and its fluorescent properties could be efficiently modulated by acid/base and metal ions in THF. The protonated effect could induce significant acidichromism and 'turn-on' near-infrared emission with a large Stokes shift (Δλ = 225 nm). Furthermore, BTAE-PA was highly selective toward Al3+ with significant absorption (yellow → orange) and fluorescence (green → red) changes. A Job's plot established the 1 : 1 stoichiometry of the complex formation between BTAE-PA and Al3+, and the limit of detection for Al3+ was determined to be 1.30 × 10-7 mol L-1. Finally, we also demonstrated that BTAE-PA could be made into test paper strips for 'naked-eye' detection of acid/Al3+, and fluorescence imaging experiments proved that BTAE-PA is capable of achieving cell imaging with good biocompatibility. Therefore, the multi-stimuli-responsive and multicoloured display performance of BTAE-PA endows the material with potential applications in security ink, acid/Al3+ sensing, and bio-imaging.

Abstract
A novel type of organic-inorganic hybrid periodic mesoporous materials based on 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (DHAQ-PMOs) was synthesized in a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES). In the process of the material synthesis, an organosiloxane precursor (DHAQ-Si) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were used as the mixed Si source, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used as the structure directing agent. The DES formed by choline chloride (ChCl), urea (U), and ethylene glycol (EG) was used as a green solvent. The water needed for the hydrolysis of DHAQ-Si and TEOS was provided from free water in the sodium hydroxide solution. As characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, the obtained mesoporous materials exhibit a two-dimensional hexagonal (P6mm) structure. DHAQ possesses double fluorescence emission peaks at ca. 520 and 580 nm due to the effect of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). For DHAQ-PMOs, the silica framework can provide a rigid environment that makes the fluorescence properties more stable and the fluorescence emission peak appears to red-shift obviously. The DHAQ-PMOs have high selectivity and sensitivity in a wide pH range that can be used to detect Cu2+, and the limit of detection (LOD) is as low as 2.39 × 10-9 M. Fluorescence polarization experiments, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to study the coordination interaction between DHAQ and Cu2+. The density functional theory (DFT) was used to further prove the coordination ability and interaction between DHAQ and Cu2+. XPS spectra were also done to prove the coordination of DHAQ and DHAQ-PMO-10 with Cu2+. In addition, confocal fluorescence microscope images exhibit that DHAQ-PMOs can detect Cu2+ in living cells. The results show that DHAQ-PMOs have great application potential as a sensor for the detection of Cu2+.

Abstract
The first discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), whereby luminogen aggregation plays a positive role in enhancing the light-emission efficiency, has piqued the interest of many researchers as it opens up a new avenue for the exploration of practically beneficial luminescent materials. Diverse AIE-active luminogens (or AIEgens) with tunable emission colours and very high quantum yields (up to unity) in the solid state have been extensively utilised in a broad range of fields including optoelectronics, energy and bioscience. In this article, we describe novel fluorene-based fluorogens that exhibit bright emission in the solid-state, mechanical stimuli-responsive optical properties and aggregation-induced emissive ability, and were able to modulate their donor and acceptor properties. The target compounds were synthesized by a Knoevenagel condensation followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction, which tends to result in good yields. The target cyanostilbenes (4a-4d) show different reversibly switched states with high contrast through morphology modulation and demonstrate solvatochromic, vapochromic, and AIE properties. These results strongly suggest that compound 4d has better properties than the other derivatives (4a-c) due to the presence of extended donor-acceptor ability. Moreover, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations strongly support the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral studies. The formation of nano-flakes and cuboid-shaped nanocrystals was further confirmed by FE-SEM and AFM studies. The synthesized compound 4d displayed very bright emission in the solid state and in the aggregate state as compared with the other derivatives (4a-4c). These results might be due to the presence of high-color contrast, which is an advantage for elucidation and overcomes the challenges exhibited in live-cell imaging applications. Moreover, an MTT assay on live A549 cells incubated with the target compound (4d) showed very low cytotoxicity even at high concentrations.

Abstract
The emergence and development of aggregation induced emission (AIE) have attracted worldwide attention due to its unique photophysical phenomenon and for removing the obstacle of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) which is the most detrimental process thereby making AIE an important and promising aspect in various fields of fluorescent material, sensing, bioimaging, optoelectronics, drug delivery system, and theranostics. In this review, we have discussed insights and explored recent advances that are being made in AIE active materials and their application in sensing, biological cell imaging, and drug delivery systems, and, furthermore, we explored AIE active fluorescent material as a building block in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we focus on various AIE active molecules such as tetraphenylethylene, AIE-active polymer, quantum dots, AIE active metal-organic framework and triphenylamine, not only in terms of their synthetic routes but also we outline their applications. Finally, we summarize our view of the construction and application of AIE-active molecules, which thus inspiring young researchers to explore new ideas, innovations, and develop the field of supramolecular chemistry in years to come.

Abstract
In this study, we reported the covalent post-synthetic modification (PSM) of a luminescent complex to achieve aggregation-induced emission (AIE), prepared using the Schiff base reaction of TPE-CHO and HLC-NH2, denoted by HLC-NH2-TPE. HLC-NH2 formed a 2D luminescent complex which was constructed using 4,4'-diamino-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid and zinc ions via a solvothermal reaction. HLC-NH2-TPE inherited the luminescence properties of HLC-NH2 and exhibited noticeable AIE properties in response to environmental viscosities and temperature changes. Interestingly, HLC-NH2-TPE displayed a time-dependent luminescence conversion phenomenon in a mixed solution of DMF/H2O (v : v/1 : 9).

Abstract
A new organosiloxane precursor ((E)-3-hydroxy-4-((2-(2-hydroxy-4-(3-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)ureido)benzoyl)hydrazono)methyl)phenyl(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)carbamate, hereinafter referred to as AHBH-Si) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were mixed as the mixed Si source, and bridged periodic mesoporous organic silica (AHBH-PMOs) nanoparticles were obtained through the co-condensation reaction. AHBH-PMO nanoparticles possess mechanisms of "Aggregation Induced Emission" (AIE) and "Intramolecular Charge Transfer" (ICT), which originate from the molecular structure of AHBH having "C[double bond, length as m-dash]N" bond, ortho hydroxyl groups, etc.. Therefore, the optical properties of AHBH are excellent with respect to the solvent effect and enhanced fluorescence. For hybrid materials, the silica framework provides a rigid environment that restricts the rotation of AHBH, thereby turning on the fluorescence of AHBH due to the regulation by the AIE effect. In particular, AHBH-PMOs are no longer restricted by organic solvents and could really achieve the response to Cu2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity in aqueous solutions of a wide pH range. In addition, the detection limit is as low as 3.26 × 10-9 M. Methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry have shown the coordination interaction between AHBH and Cu2+. The Gaussian 09 software of density functional theory to calculate the reducing changes of energy gaps among AHBH and AHBH-Si before and after the addition of Cu2+ showed that coordination interaction exists in the system. These results indicate that AHBH-PMO hybrid materials have potential applications in the field of environmental monitoring.
