Stability, biomechanics and biocompatibility analysis following different preparation strategies of hierarchical zeolite coatings on titanium alloy surfaces

Traditional titanium alloy implant surfaces are inherently smooth and often lack effective osteoinductive properties. To overcome these limitations, coating technologies are frequently employed to enhance the efficiency of bone integration at the implant-host bone interface. Hierarchical zeolites, characterized by their chemical stability, can be applied to 3D-printed porous titanium alloy (pTi) surfaces as coating. The resulting novel implants with a "microporous-mesoporous-macroporous" spatial gradient structure can influence the behavior of adjacent cells; thereby, promoting the integration of bone at the implant interface. Consequently, a thorough exploration of various preparation methods is warranted for hierarchical zeolite coatings with respect to biocompatibility, coating stability, and osteogenesis. In this study, we employed three methods: in situ crystal growth, secondary growth, and layer-by-layer assembly, to construct hierarchical zeolite coatings on pTi, resulting in the development of a gradient structure. The findings of this investigation unequivocally demonstrated that the LBL-coating method consistently produced coatings characterized by superior uniformity, heightened surface roughness, and increased hydrophilicity, as well as increased biomechanical properties. These advantages considerably amplified cell adhesion, spreading, osteogenic differentiation, and mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells, presenting superior biological functionality when compared to alternative coating methods. The outcomes of this research provide a solid theoretical basis for the clinical translation of hierarchical zeolite coatings in surface modifications for orthopedic implants.

Hierarchical Zeolite Synthesis by Alkaline Treatment: Advantages and Applications

Zeolites are of great interest to the scientific and industrial communities due to their interesting catalytic properties, such as high specific area, shape selectivity, and thermal and hydrothermal stability. For this reason, zeolites have been intensively studied and applied in several reactions of great industrial interest. However, the size of zeolite micropores may hinder the diffusion of bulky molecules in the pore system, limiting the use of zeolites in some reactions/applications that use bulky molecules. One way to address this limitation is to generate secondary porosity (in the range of supermicropores, mesopores and/or macropores) in such a way that it connects with the existing micropores, creating a hierarchical pore system. There are different hierarchical approaches; however, most are not economically viable and are complicated/time-consuming. Alkaline treatment has been highlighted in recent years due to its excellent results, simplicity, speed and low cost. In this review, we highlight the importance of alkaline treatment in the generation of secondary porosity and the parameters that influence alkaline treatment in different zeolitic structures. The properties and catalytic performance of hierarchical zeolites prepared by alkaline treatment are extensively discussed. It is expected that this approach will be useful for understanding how alkaline treatment acts on different hierarchical structures and will thus open doors to achieve other hierarchical zeolites by this method.

Clay, Zeolite and Oxide Minerals: Natural Catalytic Materials for the Ozonation of Organic Pollutants

Ozone has been successfully employed in water treatment due to its ability to oxidize a wide variety of refractory compounds. In order to increase the process efficiency and optimize its economy, the implementation of heterogeneous catalysts has been encouraged. In this context, the use of cheap and widely available natural materials is a promising option that would promote the utilization of ozone in a cost-effective water treatment process. This review describes the use of natural clays, zeolites and oxides as supports or active catalysts in the ozonation process, with emphasis on the structural characteristics and modifications performed in the raw natural materials; the catalytic oxidation mechanism; effect of the operating parameters and degradation efficiency outcomes. According to the information compiled, more research in realistic scenarios is needed (i.e., real wastewater matrix or continuous operation in pilot scale) in order to transfer this technology to the treatment of real wastewater streams.

Micro-meso structure NaP zeolite @TiO2 nanocomposite: eco-friendly photocatalyst for simultaneous removal COD and degradation of methylene blue under solar irradiation

A low-cost NaP zeolite@TiO₂ nanocomposite catalyst with zeolite Si/Al ratio lower than three were synthesized for the first time under hydrothermal condition. The nanocomposites were characterized by different methods such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N₂ physisorption, NH₃ temperature-programmed desorption (NH₃-TPD), fluorescence microscopy, thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) and zeta potential analysis. The results showed that a micro-meso structure NaP zeolite with higher surface area and acidity with respect to pure zeolite was prepared. TiO₂ nanoparticle was dispersed over the whole of zeolite without aggregation. A reduction of the TiO₂ bandgap nanoparticle was observed from DRS spectra. The photocatalytic activity of low-cost NaP zeolite@TiO₂ nanocomposite was tested for simultaneous methylene blue dye (MB) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) under solar and ultraviolet light. The result showed that the nanocomposite catalyst has great potential (above 90%) for COD removal discolouring of MB (about 99.6%) at room temperature. The optimum amount of some parameters such as the loaded amount of TiO₂ (0.36 g), catalyst dosage (0.1 g), time (2 h), initial dye concentration (100 mg/L), solution pH value (about 7) under solar light were considered. In addition, present negative charge in the surface that show in zeta potential confirm the high activity of catalyst to interaction with cationic dye. As a further advantage, the NaP zeolite@TiO₂ nanocomposite was easier to be separated in aqueous media than the pure TiO₂ powders, making possible the reuse several times (over five runs) without using oxidant. Finally, the NaP zeolite@TiO₂ nanocomposite was used for COD abatement in wastewater from two real industrial streams. The MB degradation kinetics were fitted by a pseudo-first-order model with K = 0.534 h^-1.

Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Vanadium-Containing Faujasite Zeolite

Oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes to olefins—in particular, using vanadium-based catalysts—is a promising alternative to the dehydrogenation process. Here, we investigate how the activity of the vanadium phase in ODH is related to its dispersion in porous matrices. An attempt was made to synthesize catalysts in which vanadium was deposited on a microporous faujasite zeolite (FAU) with the hierarchical (desilicated) FAU as supports. These yielded different catalysts with varying amounts and types of vanadium phase and the porosity of the support. The phase composition of the catalysts was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD); low temperature nitrogen sorption experiments resulted in their surface area and pore volumes, and reducibility was measured with a temperature-programmed reduction with a hydrogen (H₂-TPR) method. The character of vanadium was studied by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The obtained samples were subjected to catalytic tests in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane in a fixed-bed gas flow reactor with a gas chromatograph to detect subtract and reaction products at a temperature range from 400–500 °C, with varying contact times. The sample containing 6 wt% of vanadium deposited on the desilicated FAU appeared the most active. The activity was ascribed to the presence of the dispersed vanadium ions in the tetragonal coordination environment and support mesoporosity.
