Spectroscopic Studies of Lanthanide(III) Complexes with L-Malic Acid in Binary Systems

Binary systems of lanthanide ions (La, Nd, Gd, Ho, Tb, and Lu) with L-malic acid in molar ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 were studied. This study was carried out in aqueous solutions, and the composition of the formed complexes was confirmed using computer data analysis. The overall stability constants of the complexes and the equilibrium constants of the reaction were determined. The effect of ligand concentration on the composition of the internal coordination sphere of the central atom was observed. Changes in the coordination sphere of lanthanide ions were confirmed by spectroscopic measurements.

Microwave-assisted recovery of lead from electrolytic manganese anode sludge using tartaric acid and NaOH

In this study, a new metallurgical system for treating electrolytic manganese anode sludge by microwave roasting and alkaline leaching system was developed, and the lead leaching behaviour was studied. The XRD results show that Pb in anode sludge is mainly in the form of PbSO₄ after microwave roasting at 850°C, as a result, the leaching rate of Pb is improved. The results show that the leaching rate of lead can reach 93.89% under the conditions of liquid-solid ratio of 7:1, leaching time of 30 min, leaching temperature of 40°C, and the concentration of sodium hydroxide of 8%. The addition of tartaric acid can further improve the lead leaching rate, FT-IR analysis showed that the coordination form of lead and tartaric acid. Lead and tartaric acid ions (L) form three coordination compounds, PbL, Pb₂L₂ and Pb₂L₃, which can only exist in alkaline solution.

Sorption of Palladium(II) from Aqueous Solution Using Diphenylthiocarbazone Immobilized onto Kieselguhr

Kieselguhr was immobilized with diphenylthiocarbazone (dithizone) and utilized as a new sorbent to extract palladium ions from an aqueous solution. The physicochemical features of the immobilized kieselguhr (K–Dz) were specified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis–differential thermal analysis. The average crystal size of the prepared material was found to be 24.41 nm. The sorption potential of the immobilized kieselguhr for the extraction of Pd(II) and La(III) in a batch mode was studied. The effects of pH, shaking time as well as the initial concentration of metals have been examined. The results demonstrate that the optimum pH was found to be 4.5 and the equilibrium was attained within 15.0 min. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips isothermal model with a maximum sorption capacity of 20.3 (mg/g). Thermodynamic parameters of the studied metal ions show that the process is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The desorption process of Pd(II) was highly managed using acidified thiourea giving a desorption percent of approximately 80.0%. The separation possibility of Pd(II) from some metal ions such as La(III) was achieved successfully. The developed (K–Dz) composite method was applied for the recovery and separation of Pd(II) and other metal ions from a simulated automotive catalyst leachate solution. The results indicated that the (K–Dz) composite has a good reusability potential.

The Effect of pH on the Size of Silver Nanoparticles Obtained in the Reduction Reaction with Citric and Malic Acids

In colloidal methods, the morphology of nanoparticles (size and shape) as well as their stability can be controlled by changing the concentration of the substrate, stabilizer, adding inorganic salts, changing the reducer/substrate molar ratio, and changing the pH and reaction time. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was carried out according to the modified Lee and Meisel method in a wide pH range (from 2.0 to 11.0) using citric acid and malic acid, without adding any additives or stabilizers. Keeping the same reaction conditions as the concentration of acid and silver ions, temperature, and heating time, it was possible to determine the relationship between the reaction pH, the type of acid, and the size of the silver nanoparticles formed. Obtained colloids were analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy and investigated by means of Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The study showed that the colloids reduced with citric acid and malic acid are stable over time for a minimum of seven weeks. We observed that reactions occurred for citric acid from pH 6.0 to 11.0 and for malic acid from pH 7.0 to 11.0. The average size of the quasi-spherical nanoparticles changed with pH due to the increase of reaction rate.
