Recent Advances in π-Conjugated N^C-Chelate Organoboron Materials

O-B(F)←N Functionalized Copolymers with Delayed Fluorescence and P-Type Semiconducting Characteristics

Conjugated polymers with integrating properties of delayed fluorescence and photovoltaic responses simultaneously are scarcely reported due to the generally contradictory requirements for molecular structures to achieve the two properties. Herein, an O-B(F)←N functionalized fused unit (M) with multiple resonance features, small energy gap between lowest singlet excited state (S1) and triplet excited state (T1) (ΔEST = 0.23 eV), and delayed fluorescence (τD = 0.75 µs), is designed. Selecting three benzodithiophene (BDT) derivatives as co-units to copolymerize with M, leading to a series of O-B(F)←N embedded polymers also maintaining delayed fluorescence (τD = 0.4-0.5 µs). Moreover, p-type semiconductor characteristics are tested for these polymers with hole mobilities in the range of 10-6-10-5 cm2/Vs. Devices with obviously photovoltaic responses are prepared using these polymers as donors and Y6 as the acceptor, affording a preliminary efficiency of 5.05%. This work successfully demonstrates an effective strategy to design conjugated polymers with integrating properties of delayed fluorescence and photovoltaic performance simultaneously by introducing O-B(F)←N functional groups to polymer backbones.

Nanotechnology for brain tumor imaging and therapy based on π-conjugated materials: state-of-the-art advances and prospects

In contemporary biomedical research, the development of nanotechnology has brought forth numerous possibilities for brain tumor imaging and therapy. Among these, π-conjugated materials have garnered significant attention as a special class of nanomaterials in brain tumor-related studies. With their excellent optical and electronic properties, π-conjugated materials can be tailored in structure and nature to facilitate applications in multimodal imaging, nano-drug delivery, photothermal therapy, and other related fields. This review focuses on presenting the cutting-edge advances and application prospects of π-conjugated materials in brain tumor imaging and therapeutic nanotechnology.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of Borinic Acid Derivatives

Borinic acids [R2B(OH)] and their chelate derivatives are a subclass of organoborane compounds used in cross-coupling reactions, catalysis, medicinal chemistry, polymer or optoelectronics materials. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the synthesis of diarylborinic acids and their four-coordinated analogs. The main strategies to build up borinic acids rely either on the addition of organometallic reagents to boranes (B(OR)3, BX3, aminoborane, arylboronic esters) or the reaction of triarylboranes with a ligand (diol, amino alcohol, etc.). After general practical considerations of borinic acids, an overview of the main synthetic methods, their scope and limitations is provided. We also discuss some mechanistic aspects.

Four-membered C^N chelation in main-group organometallic chemistry

Main-group organometallic compounds containing four-membered C^N chelating rings are being studied because of the interest in harnessing the enhanced reactivity of such compounds which arises as a result of the release of steric strain. In this article, we have reviewed the literature on these systems. This review is organised in terms of the types of ligand systems that allow the assembly of such compounds, viz., compounds containing aliphatic amine motifs, pyridine motifs and aniline motifs. In addition to a discussion on the synthesis and structure, we also examine the reactivity and applications of the main-group element compounds involved. In particular, applications involving H₂ activation, carbonyl activation, olefin reduction, C-H activation, hydroalumination, cyanamide oligomerisation, borylation of olefins and heteroarenes, isocyanate activation and C-C bond activation are discussed.

Hydrazone-based boron difluoride complexes as triplet photosensitizers for singlet oxygen generation

Due to the highly selective nature of singlet oxygen as an oxidant, it has received considerable interest in various areas of (organic) chemistry. Two green light activated hydrazone-based boron difluoride triplet photosensitizers possessing high quantum yields for ¹O₂ formation are reported. These photostable complexes are promising in applications in synthesis and catalysis.

A visible-light activated ROS generator multilayer film for antibacterial coatings

The current scenario of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and pandemics caused by viruses makes research in the area of antibacterial and antiviral materials and surfaces more urgent than ever. In this regard, salicylideneimine based tetracoordinate boron-containing organic compounds are emerging as a new class of photosensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. However, the inherent inability of small organic molecules to be processed limits their potential use in functional coatings. Here we show the synthesis of a novel polymer functionalized with diiodosalicylideneimine-boron difluoride (PEI-BF2) and its utility for surface coating inside glass vials via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The multilayer thin films are characterized using AFM and UV-Vis spectroscopy and the resultant coatings display excellent stability. The multilayer coating could be activated using visible light, and owing to the photocatalytic activity of the incorporated PEI-BF2, the surface coating is able to generate singlet oxygen efficiently upon light irradiation. Further, the multilayer coated surfaces exhibit remarkable antimicrobial activity towards both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria under a variety of conditions. Thus, owing to the simple synthesis and the convenient methodology adopted for the preparation of multilayer coatings, the material reported here could pave the way for the development of sunlight activated large area self-sterile surfaces.

Near-Infrared-Absorbing B-N Lewis Pair-Functionalized Anthracenes: Electronic Structure Tuning, Conformational Isomerism, and Applications in Photothermal Cancer Therapy

B-N-fused dianthracenylpyrazine derivatives are synthesized to generate new low gap chromophores. Photophysical and electrochemical, crystal packing, and theoretical studies have been performed. Two energetically similar conformers are identified by density functional theory calculations, showing that the core unit adopts a curved saddle-like shape (x-isomer) or a zig-zag conformation (z-isomer). In the solid state, the z-isomer is prevalent according to an X-ray crystal structure of a C₆F₅-substituted derivative (4-Pf), but variable-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance studies suggest a dynamic behavior in solution. B-N fusion results in a large decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap and dramatically lowers the LUMO energy compared to the all-carbon analogues. 4-Pf in particular shows significant absorbance at greater than 700 nm while being almost transparent throughout the visible region. After encapsulation in the biodegradable polymer DSPE-mPEG₂₀₀₀, 4-Pf nanoparticles (4-Pf-NPs) exhibit good water solubility, high photostability, and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼41.8%. 4-Pf-NPs are evaluated both in vitro and in vivo as photothermal therapeutic agents. These results uncover B-N Lewis pair functionalization of PAHs as a promising strategy toward new NIR-absorbing materials for photothermal applications.

Hydroboration of vinyl halides with mesitylborane: a direct access to (mesityl)(alkyl)haloboranes

The direct access to (mesityl)(alkyl)haloboranes (Mes(Alk)BX) (X = Br, Cl) from mesitylborane dimer and vinyl halides is presented. The involved hydroboration reaction results in the transfer of the halogen atom from the carbon of the starting material to the boron in the final product. The reactivity of the obtained Mes(Alk)BX has been evaluated for the synthesis of the bipyridyl boronium cations and 2-arylpyridine derived boron N^C-chelates. The formation mechanism of Mes(Alk)BX is apprended by DFT-calculations which shows that their formation involves two concomitant pathways derived from the regioslectivity of the hydroboration reaction.

Linear Extension of Anthracene via B←N Lewis Pair Formation: Effects on Optoelectronic Properties and Singlet O2 Sensitization

The functionalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via B←N Lewis pair formation offers an opportunity to judiciously fine-tune the structural features and optoelectronic properties, to suit the demands of applications in organic electronic devices, bioimaging, and as sensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. We demonstrate that the N-directed electrophilic borylation of 2,6-di(pyrid-2-yl)anthracene offers access to linearly extended acene derivatives Py-BR (R=Et, Ph, C₆ F₅ ). In comparison to indeno-fused 9,10-diphenylanthracene, the formal "BN for CC" replacement in Py-BR selectively lowers the LUMO, resulting in a much reduced HOMO-LUMO gap. An even more extended conjugated system with seven six-membered rings in a row (Qu-BEt) is obtained by borylation of 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)anthracene. Fluorinated Py-BPf shows particularly advantageous properties, including relatively lower-lying HOMO and LUMO levels, strong yellow-green fluorescence, and effective singlet oxygen sensitization, while resisting self-sensitized conversion to its endoperoxide.

Catalytic Enantioselective Construction of Chiroptical Boron-Stereogenic Compounds

The construction of main group heteroatom-stereogenic compounds is of great importance due to their intriguing chemical, physical, biological, and stereoelectronic properties. Despite that organoboron compounds are widely used in organic chemistry, the creation of a tetrahedral boron-stereogenic center in one enantiomeric form remains highly challenging. Given the labile nature of ligands attached to the tetracoordinate boron atom, only a handful of enantioenriched boron-stereogenic compounds have been reported via resolution or a chiral substrate-induced diastereoselective approach. To date catalytic asymmetric synthesis of boron-stereogenic compounds has remained unknown. Here, we demonstrate the first catalytic enantioselective construction of boron-stereogenic compounds via an asymmetric copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. This enantioselective CuAAC reaction not only gives access to a wide range of novel highly functionalized boron-stereogenic heterocycles in high yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities but also produces optically active terminal alkyne and triazole moieties with various potential application prospects. Further transformation of the chiral tetracoordinate boron compounds delivers several complex heterocyclic entities bearing boron-stereogenic centers without the loss of enantiopurity. Moreover, the X-ray structure, the barrier to racemization, and the HOMO/LUMO gap of selected tetracoordinate boron compounds are investigated. Notably, these novel N,N π-conjugated boron-stereogenic compounds exhibit bright fluorescence. The optical properties, including circular dichroism, quantum yield, and circular polarized luminescence spectroscopies, are examined. These features expand the chemical space of the chiroptical boron-based dye platform, which could have great potential applications in chiral optoelectronic materials.

Pyrrolic Type N Directed Borylation Route to BN-PAHs: Tuning the Photophysical Properties by Varying the Conjugation Shape and Size

Two series of BN-cyclopenta[a]phenalenes have been synthesized through an indole/pyrrole oriented borylation reaction. A total of five compounds are obtained and fully characterized; one of them is unambiguously confirmed by single X-ray crystal structure. Their photophysical properties could be finely tuned through varying the conjugation size and shape of the bottom PAHs applied. Moreover, their response toward fluoride anions was also investigated.

Complexation of 2,7-diazapyrene with boron for structural and electronic tuning

Complexation of tetra(hydroxyphenyl)-2,7-diazapyrene with boron provided the boron complexes as anti- and syn-isomers. The structural difference induces self-association behaviour of the syn-isomer and isomerisation of the anti-isomer in the solution and solid states.
