Controlling Particle Morphology and Pore Size in the Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Materials

Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Silica with Nonionic Surfactant/Anionic Polyelectrolyte as Template under Near-Neutral pH Conditions

Ordered mesoporous silica is widely used in catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicine, among which SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous-15) is one of the most widely studied. However, the synthesis of SBA-15 often requires strong acid (hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid), which will not only corrode industrial equipment but also pollute the environment with the wastewater containing strong acid and halogen (sulfur). Here, we demonstrate a green synthetic strategy for SBA-15 under weakly acidic conditions through an anionic assembly route. With the assistance of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APMS), the pH value of the synthesis system can be increased to 4-5, which is a mild near-neutral condition. In addition, halogen-free synthesis using organic acids is also achieved. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 sorption characterizations show that the obtained SBA-15 has good texture properties, with a specific surface area of 430-500 m2/g and ordered 6-8 nm mesopores, which is similar to SBA-15 synthesized in traditional strong acid. This strategy provides a facile and environmentally friendly route for the large-scale production of ordered mesoporous materials.

Engineering mesoporous bioactive glasses for emerging stimuli-responsive drug delivery and theranostic applications

Mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs), which belong to the category of modern porous nanomaterials, have garnered significant attention due to their impressive biological activities, appealing physicochemical properties, and desirable morphological features. They hold immense potential for utilization in diverse fields, including adsorption, separation, catalysis, bioengineering, and medicine. Despite possessing interior porous structures, excellent morphological characteristics, and superior biocompatibility, primitive MBGs face challenges related to weak encapsulation efficiency, drug loading, and mechanical strength when applied in biomedical fields. It is important to note that the advantageous attributes of MBGs can be effectively preserved by incorporating supramolecular assemblies, miscellaneous metal species, and their conjugates into the material surfaces or intrinsic mesoporous networks. The innovative advancements in these modified colloidal inorganic nanocarriers inspire researchers to explore novel applications, such as stimuli-responsive drug delivery, with exceptional in-vivo performances. In view of the above, we outline the fabrication process of calcium-silicon-phosphorus based MBGs, followed by discussions on their significant progress in various engineered strategies involving surface functionalization, nanostructures, and network modification. Furthermore, we emphasize the recent advancements in the textural and physicochemical properties of MBGs, along with their theranostic potentials in multiple cancerous and non-cancerous diseases. Lastly, we recapitulate compelling viewpoints, with specific considerations given from bench to bedside.

Structural Behavior of Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymer P104/Water System

A detailed study of the different structural transitions of the triblock copolymer PEO₂₇-PPO₆₁-PEO₂₇ (P104) in water, in the dilute and semi-dilute regions, is addressed here as a function of temperature and P104 concentration (C_P104) by mean of complimentary methods: viscosimetry, densimetry, dynamic light scattering, turbidimetry, polarized microscopy, and rheometry. The hydration profile was calculated through density and sound velocity measurements. It was possible to identify the regions where monomers exist, spherical micelle formation, elongated cylindrical micelles formation, clouding points, and liquid crystalline behavior. We report a partial phase diagram including information for P104 concentrations from 1 × 10^-4 to 90 wt.% and temperatures from 20 to 75 °C that will be helpful for further interaction studies with hydrophobic molecules or active principles for drug delivery.

Nano zinc oxide-functionalized nanofibrous microspheres: A bioactive hybrid platform with antimicrobial, regenerative and hemostatic activities

Bioactive hybrid constructs are at the cutting edge of innovative biomaterials. PLA nanofibrous microspheres (NF-MS) were functionalized with zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and DDAB-modified nZnO (D-nZnO) for developing inorganic/nano-microparticulate hybrid constructs (nZnO@NF-MS and D-nZnO@NF-MS) merging antibacterial, regenerative, and haemostatic functionalities. The hybrids appeared as three-dimensional NF-MS frameworks made-up entirely of interconnecting nanofibers embedding nZnO or D-nZnO. Both systems achieved faster release of Zn²⁺ than their respective nanoparticles and D-nZnO@NF-MS exhibited significantly greater surface wettability than nZnO@NF-MS. Regarding bioactivity, D-nZnO@NF-MS displayed a significantly greater and fast-killing effect against Staphylococcus aureus. Both nZnO@NF-MS and D-nZnO@NF-MS showed controllable concentration-dependent cytotoxicity to human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) compared with pristine NF-MS. They were also more effective than pristine NF-MS in promoting migration of human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) in the in vitro wound healing assay. Although D-nZnO@NF-MS showed greater in vitro hemostatic activity than nZnO@NF-MS, (blood-clotting index 22.82 ± 0.65% vs.54.67 ±2.32%) both structures exhibited instant hemostasis (0 s) with no blood loss (0 mg) in the rat-tail cutting technique. By merging the multiple therapeutic bioactivities of D-nZnO and the 3D-structural properties of NF-MS, the innovative D-nZnO@NF-MS hybrid construct provides a versatile bioactive material platform for different biomedical applications.

The Structure of Ordered Mesoporous Materials Synthesized from Aluminum Phyllosilicate Clay (Bentonite)

This paper reports the synthesis and structural analysis of mesoporous silica materials with the use of aluminum phyllosilicate clay (bentonite) as an alternative silica source. In the proposed synthesis, bentonite, as natural aluminosilicate, was used instead of commercially available and quite expensive tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) silica source. The objective of the research study was to determine the effect of aluminum loading in the mesoporous silica body for ordering structure, porosity, and potential sorption capacity to thorium ions. The unique direction developed in this procedure is focused on preparing advanced materials from natural sources with their own desired functionality and general availability. The applied procedure based on the classic, one-step synthesis of SBA-15 silicates was modified by gradually increasing the bentonite amount with simultaneous reduction of the TEOS content. The structural and morphological characterization, as well as evaluation of the porous structure of the obtained materials, was performed using powder wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle scattering (SAXS), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), low-temperature nitrogen adsorption–desorption methods and potentiometric titration. The new, cost-effective composites for the removal of Th(IV) ions are proposed. The synergistic effect of expanding the porous surface using bentonite as a silica precursor and the presence of thorium-binding groups (such as Al2O3) is indicated.

Green preparation and characterization of AGC-ZM-2022 as a novel mesoporous silica material using palmitic acid as a natural template

In this research project, the preparation of a novel mesoporous silica compound (AGC-ZM-2022) using a fatty acid as a template has been reported for the first time. This mesoporous silica compound was designed using palmitic acid as a template, which is one of the most common saturated fatty acids found in animals, plants, and microorganisms. AGC-ZM-2022 mesoporous silica was prepared using tetraethylorthosilicate as a silica source and palmitic acid as a template (instead of traditional templates) through the sol-gel method. The physical properties and structure of AGC-ZM-2022 were studied by FT-IR, SEM, XRD, TEM, and BET techniques.

Hydrothermal synthesis temperature induces sponge-like loose silica structure: A potential support for Fe2O3-based adsorbent in treating As(V)-contaminated water

Low cost Fe₂O₃-based sorbents with an exceptional selectivity toward the targeted As(V) pollutant have gained extensive attention in water treatment. However, their structural features often influence removal performance. In this respect, we present herein a rational design of silica-supported Fe₂O₃ sorbents with an enhanced morphological structure based on a simple temperature-induced process. Low-hydrothermal temperature synthesis (60 and 100 °C) provided a large silica-cluster size with a close packed structure (S-60 and S-100), contributing to an increase in mass transport resistance. Fe₂O₃/S-60 with 6.2-nm pore width silica achieved a maximum As(V) uptake capacity (q_m) of only 3.5 mg g^-1. Supporting Fe₂O₃ on S-100 with an approximately two-fold increase in the pore size (13 nm) did not lead to any evident enhancement in q_e (3.7 mg g^-1). However, expanding the pore window up to 22.6 nm (S-140) and 39.5 nm (S-180), along with changing from close-packed to sponge-like loose structures induced by high-temperature synthesis (140 °C and 180 °C), resulted in substantial increases in q_m. Fe₂O₃/S-140 had 1.7 and 1.6 times higher q_m (5.9 mg g^-1) than Fe₂O₃/S-100 and Fe₂O₃/S-60, respectively. The highest q_m (7.4 mg g^-1) was achieved for Fe₂O₃/S-180, which was attributed to its relatively small-sized silica cluster and the largest cavities that facilitated easier access by As(V) to adsorbing sites.

Investigation on the stability improvement of hybrid halide all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with stable luminous properties are crucial to for the construction of corresponding light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Hybrid halide perovskite QDs, especially those contain iodine element emitting red light, usually demonstrate poor emission stability owing to the halide segregation. Moreover, red component is indispensable for the construction of white LEDs (WLEDs). Hence, it is essential to improve the luminous stability of hybrid halide perovskite QDs containing iodine element. Here, magnesium dopant and silica matrix were employed to improve the stability of hybrid halide CsPb(IBr)₃QDs. Red, green and blue are three primary colors for constructing WLEDs. Therefore, silica-coated CsPbBr₃QDs emitting green light were also synthesized. The fabricated silica-coated Mn:CsPb(IBr)₃/PMMA film delivered good emission stability during a 42 d observation period, exhibiting the improved stability compared with the corresponding Mn:CsPb(IBr)₃QDs in solution. WLEDs were fabricated by integrating the mixture of silica-coated Mn:CsPb(IBr)₃QDs, silica-coated CsPbBr₃QDs and silicon sealant with a blue-emission LED chip. The as fabricated device exhibited a longer lifetime to be lit than that of those reported previously. During the 36 d observation period for the as fabricated device, the red emission from the silica-coated Mn:CsPb(IBr)₃QDs experienced a peak-emission shift of 34 nm, which is much less than that in Mn:CsPb(IBr)₃QDs solution. Their overall intensity downtrend combined the peak-emission shift are responsible for the spectrum shape change, so as to the fluctuation of color correlated temperature and color rendering index. Our study provides a good starting point for the further improvement of the stability of the hybrid halide perovskites QDs and the corresponding light-emitting devices. With deep studies on the synthesis method and luminous mechanism for hybrid halide CsPb(IBr)₃QDs, red-emission perovskite QDs with satisfied properties are expected to be obtained.

Distinct Methodologies to Produce Capped Mesoporous Silica with Hydroxyapatite and the Influence in Intracellular Signaling as Cytotoxicity on Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

Mesoporous silica has unique properties such as controllable mesoporous structure and size, good biocompatibility, high specific surface area, and large pore volume. For that reason, this material has been broadly functionalized for biomedical applications, such as optical imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound imaging, and widely employed as drug delivery systems. In this study, we synthesized fiber-type mesoporous silica capped with hydroxyapatite (ordered SiO₂-CaO-P₂O₅ mesoporous silica). Its biological activity was evaluated through a cellular and molecular approach using HUVEC cell culture. Two distinct methodologies have produced the ordered SiO₂-CaO-P₂O₅ mesoporous silica: (i) two-step Ca-doped silica matrix followed by hydroxyapatite crystallization inside the Ca-doped silica matrix and (ii) one-step Ca-doped silica matrix formed with the hydroxyapatite crystallization. Further analysis included: elemental analysis, transmission, scanning electron microscopy images, Small and Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared, and in vitro assays with HUVEC (cytotoxicity and immunoblotting). The hydroxyapatite capping methodology significantly affected the original mesoporous material structure. Furthermore, no cellular or molecular effect has been observed. The promising results presented here suggest that the one-step method to obtain hydroxyapatite capped mesoporous silica was effective, also demonstrating that this material has potential in biomedical applications.
