Diels-Alder Cycloaddition to the Bay Region of Perylene and Its Derivatives as an Attractive Strategy for PAH Core Expansion: Theoretical and Practical Aspects

Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction of a Biphenyl Group in a Strained meta-Quaterphenylene Acetylene

At elevated temperatures, a strained, cyclic meta-quaterphenylene acetylene undergoes an intramolecular cyclization reaction to form benz[e]indeno[1,2,3-hi]acephenanthrylene. This reaction represents an example of a Diels-Alder reaction at the 2-, 1-, 1'-, and 2'-positions of a biphenyl derivative, a region analogous to the bay regions of perylene and other periacenes. The reaction proceeds cleanly with high conversion. Kinetics studies of a methylated derivative reveal that the ΔG‡ for the reaction is ∼40-41 kcal/mol, and computational models predict a similar value of Grel for the transition state of a concerted [4 + 2]-cycloaddition.

Synthesis, Photoswitching Behavior and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Substituted Tribenzo[a,d,g]coronene

A family of tribenzocoronene derivatives bearing various substituents (3) were constructed through the Diels-Alder reaction, followed by the Scholl oxidation, where the molecular structure of 3b was determined via single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The effect of substitution on the optical and electrochemical property was systematically investigated, with the assistance of theoretical calculations. Moreover, the thin films of the resulting molecules 3b and 3e complexed with fullerene produced strong photocurrent response upon irradiation of white light. In addition, 3b and 3e exhibit a positive nonlinear optical response resulting from the two-photon absorption and excited state absorption processes.

Post-synthetic π-extension of perylene conjugated porous polymer via APEX reactions: tunable optical and gas storage properties

Double post-synthetic modification is used for the π-extension of perylene based conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) using sequential annulative π-extension (APEX) reactions. This approach enabled us to synthesize new CPPs rendered with donor-acceptor rigid π-systems such as benzoperylene anhydride (BPA-CPP) and benzoperylene benzimidazole (BPBI-CPP) with distinct optical properties. Despite its low surface area, BPBI-CPP shows good CO₂ uptake and pH responsive behaviour owing to the presence of benzimidazole rings.

Sustainable Solvent-Free Diels-Alder Approaches in the Development of Constructive Heterocycles and Functionalized Materials: A Review

The Diels-Alder reaction (DAR) is found in myriad applications in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry for drug development, as it is the method of choice for the expedient synthesis of complex natural compounds and innovative materials including nanomaterials, graphene expanses, and polymeric nanofibers. Furthermore, the greatest focus of attention of DARs is on the consistent reaction procedure with stimulus yields by highly stereo- and regioselective mechanistic pathways. Therefore, the present review is intended to summarize conventional solvent-free (SF) DARs for the expedient synthesis of heterocyclic compounds and materials. In particular, this review deals with the DARs of mechanochemical grinding, catalysis (including stereoselective catalysts), thermal, and electromagnetic radiation (such as microwave [MW], infrared [IR], and ultraviolet [UV] irradiation) in SF procedures. Therefore, this comprehensive review validates the application of DARs to pharmaceutical innovations and biorenewable materials through consistent synthetic approaches.

1-Substituted Perylene Derivatives by Anionic Cyclodehydrogenation: Analysis of the Reaction Mechanism

Perylene derivatives constitute a promising class of compounds with technological applications mainly due to their optoelectronic properties. One mechanism proposed to synthesize them, starting from binaphthyl derivatives, is anionic cyclodehydrogenation (under reductive conditions). However, the scope of this reaction is limited. In the present study, we report a theoretical and experimental analysis of this particular reaction mechanism for its use in the synthesis of 1-substituted perylenes. Different substituents at position 2 of 1,1'-binaphthalene were evaluated: -OCH₃, -OSi(CH₃)₂C(CH₃)₃, and -N(CH₃)₂. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the proposed mechanism, we suggest that the cyclization takes place from binaphthyl dianion instead of its radical anion. This dianion has an open-shell diradical nature, and this could be the species that was detected by EPR in previous studies. The O-substituted derivatives could not afford the perylene derivatives since their radical anions fragment and the necessary binaphthyl dianion could not be formed. On the other hand, 49% of N,N-dimethylperylen-1-amine was obtained starting from the N-substituted 2-binapthyl derivative as a substrate, employing a simpler experimental methodology.

Diels-Alder Cycloaddition with CO, CO2, SO2, or N2 Extrusion: A Powerful Tool for Material Chemistry

Phenyl, naphthyl, polyarylphenyl, coronene, and other aromatic and polyaromatic moieties primarily influence the final materials' properties. One of the synthetic tools used to implement (hetero)aromatic moieties into final structures is Diels-Alder cycloaddition (DAC), typically combined with Scholl dehydrocondensation. Substituted 2-pyranones, 1,1-dioxothiophenes, and, especially, 1,3-cyclopentadienones are valuable substrates for [4 + 2] cycloaddition, leading to multisubstituted derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatics. Cycloadditions of dienes can be carried out with extrusion of carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, or sulphur dioxide. When pyranones, dioxothiophenes, or cyclopentadienones and DA cycloaddition are aided with acetylenes including masked ones, conjugated or isolated diynes, or polyynes and arynes, aromatic systems are obtained. This review covers the development and the current state of knowledge regarding thermal DA cycloaddition of dienes mentioned above and dienophiles leading to (hetero)aromatics via CO, CO2, or SO2 extrusion. Particular attention was paid to the role that introduced aromatic moieties play in designing molecular structures with expected properties. Undoubtedly, the DAC variants described in this review, combined with other modern synthetic tools, constitute a convenient and efficient way of obtaining functionalized nanomaterials, continually showing the potential to impact materials sciences and new technologies in the nearest future.
