Abstract
In this work, an eco-friendly, green, efficient approach for oxidative and reductive Heck-Mizoroki (HM) reactions was developed, which offered acceptable yields from first-pass experiments. Mono-arylation was achieved without the use of ligands, directing groups, or prefunctionalized alkenes. Considering mild reaction conditions, good functional group compatibility, and great regioselectivity, the method can find broad applications in novel medicine and material development and discovery processes.

Abstract
AbstractIn the pharmaceutical industry, boronic acid and esters play an important role in API-based synthesis. The most efficient way of preparing various active agents is palladium-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura borylation reactions. Herein, we report the formation of dimerization product [6,6′-biimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine]-2,2′-dicarboxamide derivatives 7a–j from 6-bromoimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylate by employing the same conditions. A regioselective borylation of ethyl 6-bromoimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylate (3) was examined for the formation of ethyl 6-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylate (4a) but it was found to be directed towards the dimerization product 5. The nitrogen-rich system was incorporated into potential anti-cancer and anti-TB agents through acid amine coupling reactions between acid 6 and various amines (dialkyl/cyclic sec./tert.) to form the final adducts 7. Five derived scaffolds were identified as moderately active in TB activity against the H37Rv strain, while two compounds were found to be particularly potent in NCI-60 anti-cancer screening in nine cancer panels.

Abstract
In synthetic organic chemistry, the formation of carbon-carbon bonds is a significant and substantial reaction. As a result, developing a highly active magnetic heterogeneous catalyst with excellent performance is a very appealing technique for constructing C-C bonds in organic chemistry. The present study describes the fabrication of a novel and readily recoverable nickel-based metal-organic framework (MOF) for C-C bond formation through the Sonogashira coupling reaction. The efficient magnetic core-shell structure (Fe3O4@TEA@MOF) with a 3D dendritic fibrous morphology was successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal approach by immobilizing Ni-based MOF onto the Fe3O4@TEA core-shell structure. The fabrication of Fe3O4@TEA@MOF was confirmed by various analyses; Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), and elemental mapping confirmed the stepwise fabrication of catalyst. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) showed the crystalline nature of the catalyst. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) displayed the 3D dendritic fibrous morphology. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometer analysis (VSM) showed the excellent thermal stability and magnetic properties of Fe3O4@TEA@MOF. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET) found that the fabricated catalyst with a surface area of 36.2 m2 g-1, pore volume of 0.18 cm3 g-1, and mean pore diameter of 20.38 nm belongs to mesoporous structures. In addition, the information from the inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) about fresh and reused catalysts showed that the metal leaching amount is slight and about 1.98%. Other advantages of the Fe3O4@TEA@MOF catalyst can be mentioned as easily reusable for four runs and high performance (above 98%) in synthesizing diphenylacetylene from phenylacetylene, aryl halide, and cesium carbonate (as the base) under solvent-free and microwave conditions.

Abstract
In Portugal, publications with mechanochemical methods date back to 2009, with the report on mechanochemical strategies for the synthesis of metallopharmaceuticals. Since then, mechanochemical applications have grown in Portugal, spanning several fields, mainly crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, catalysis, and organic and inorganic chemistry. The area with the most increased development is the synthesis of multicomponent crystal forms, with several groups synthesizing solvates, salts, and cocrystals in which the main objective was to improve physical properties of the active pharmaceutical ingredients. Recently, non-crystalline materials, such as ionic liquids and amorphous solid dispersions, have also been studied using mechanochemical methods. An area that is in expansion is the use of mechanochemical synthesis of bioinspired metal-organic frameworks with an emphasis in antibiotic coordination frameworks. The use of mechanochemistry for catalysis and organic and inorganic synthesis has also grown due to the synthetic advantages, ease of synthesis, scalability, sustainability, and, in the majority of cases, the superior properties of the synthesized materials. It can be easily concluded that mechanochemistry is expanding in Portugal in diverse research areas.

Abstract
Carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions are among the most important synthetic tools for the preparation of pharmaceuticals and bioactive compounds. However, these reactions are normally carried out using copper, phosphines, and/or amines, which are poisonous for pharmaceuticals. The use of nanocomposite catalysts holds promise for facilitating these reactions and making them more environmentally friendly. In the present work, the PEGylated (PEG stands for poly(ethylene glycol) pyridylphenylene dendrons immobilized on silica loaded with magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully employed for the stabilization of Pd2+ complexes and Pd nanoparticles. The catalyst developed showed excellent catalytic activity in copper-free Sonogashira and Heck cross-coupling reactions. The reactions proceeded smoothly in green solvents at low palladium loading, resulting in high yields of cross-coupling products (from 80% to 97%) within short reaction times. The presence of magnetic nanoparticles allows easy magnetic separation for repeated use without a noticeable decrease of catalytic activity due to the strong stabilization of Pd species by rigid and bulky dendritic ligands. The PEG dendron periphery makes the catalyst hydrophilic and better suited for green solvents. The minor drop in activity upon the catalyst reuse is explained by the formation of Pd nanoparticles from the Pd2+ species during the catalytic reaction. The magnetic separation and reuse of the nanocomposite catalyst reduces the cost of target products as well as energy and material consumption and diminishes residual contamination by the catalyst. These factors as well as the absence of copper in the catalyst makeup pave the way for future applications of such catalysts in cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract
Anthracenes are an important class of acenes. They are being utilized more and more often in chemistry and materials sciences, due to their unique rigid molecular structure and photoreactivity. In particular, photodimerization can be harnessed for the fabrication of novel photoresponsive materials. Photodimerization between the same anthracenes have been investigated and utilized in various fields, while reactions between varying anthracenes have barely been investigated. Here, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is employed for the investigation of the photodimerization of two exemplary anthracenes: anthracene (A) and 9-bromoanthracene (B), in the solutions with only A or B, and in the mixture of A and B. Estimated k values, derived from the presented kinetic model, showed that the dimerization of A was 10 times faster in comparison with B when compounds were investigated in separate samples, and 2 times faster when compounds were prepared in the mixture. Notably, the photoreaction in the mixture, apart from AA and BB, additionally yielded a large amount of the AB mixdimer. Another important advantage of investigating a mixture with different anthracenes is the ability to estimate the relative reactivity for all the reactions under the same experimental conditions. This results in a better understanding of the photodimerization processes. Thus, the rational photofabrication of mix-anthracene-based materials can be facilitated, which is of crucial importance in the field of polymer and material sciences.
