Spreading of Oil Droplets Containing Surfactants and Pesticides on Water Surface Based on the Marangoni Effect

Marangoni flows triggered by cationic-anionic surfactant complexation

HYPOTHESIS

The gradients in surfactant distribution at a fluid-fluid interface can induce fluid flow known as the Marangoni flow. Fluid interfaces found in biological and environmental systems are seldom clean, where mixtures of various surfactants are present. The presence of multi-component surfactant mixtures introduces the possibility of interactions among constituents, which may impact Marangoni flows and alter flow dynamics.

EXPERIMENTS

We employed flow visualization, surface tension and reaction kinetic measurements, and numerical simulations to quantitatively investigate the Marangoni flows induced by the reacting surfactant mixtures. Different binary surfactant mixtures were utilized for comparative analysis.

FINDINGS

The impact of surfactant interactions on Marangoni flows is confirmed through the observation of diverse complex flow patterns that result from the combination of oppositely charged surfactants in varying composition ratios and concentrations. Unique flow patterns originate from the composition-dependent interfacial phenomena upon mixing surfactants. Our findings provide vital insights that could be used to guide the development of effective oil remediation or the spreading of waterborne pathogens in contaminated regions.

Spreading and Capillary Imbibition of Viscous Oil Lens into an Open-Cell Porous Structure

Oil pollution in the ocean is becoming more and more of a serious issue, which increases interest in both ways for combating its cause and methods for observing and monitoring how oil spreads. A promising approach based on an optical method with empirical relations for selected viscous oil-water systems is presented. Based on a modified melamine sponge (MMS), the microscopic spreading and oil capillary penetration phenomenon of the porous structure were investigated. The objective of this study is 2-fold: (i) to present a more thorough experimental description of the spreading of viscous oil lens on the water surface and capillary action of oil lens into MMS porous structure; and (ii) to provide a theoretical description that helps to explain some of the observed behavior. With knowledge of δ ∞ 2 = - 2 S ρ W / g ρ O ( ρ W - ρ O ) , we can determine the spreading coefficient S. It needs to be pointed out that the oil lens floating on the water surface does satisfy Neumann's rule as the spreading coefficient of the air-oil-water system is negative (- 9.8 mN/m), indicating the ability to form a stable oil lens with thickness δO = 3.04 mm and radius RL = 38.64 mm after 60 min of spreading test. Furthermore, to better understand the capillary phenomena from a mechanical approach, an oil lens in contact with the surface of the MMS porous structure, by in-depth visualization, is properly defined as the balance of forces acting. Finally, as an illustration of this method, we utilized this approach to obtain the equilibrium height of the capillary rise and take it into account in terms of effective material thickness.

Flow-Driven Self-Propulsion of Oil Droplet on a Surfactant Solution Surface, as Observed by Time-Resolved Interfacial Tension and Surface Flow Speed Measurements

The imbalanced force of the interfacial tension applied to an object has often been taken into account in the analysis of the motion mechanism of self-propelled systems. However, heterogeneous distributions of the interfacial tension also cause Marangoni flows, and these flows also contribute to the self-propulsion through the viscous force. The contribution of such flows has not been observed directly, while the interfacial tension difference has been measured in some systems. In this study, simultaneous measurements of the interfacial tension and surface flow speed of the unidirectional self-propelled motion of a butyl salicylate (BS) droplet in a circular channel on a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) aqueous solution were achieved by the quasi-elastic laser scattering method. The droplet position was also recorded by observing its fluorescence excited by a UV light. The BS droplet speed dependence of the interfacial tension and surface flow speed were measured by varying the initial BS concentration codissolved in the SDS aqueous solution. As a result, a periodic decrease of the interfacial tension and a periodic increase of the speed of both forward and backward flows were observed when the droplet passed the sampling position of the time-resolved measurements. When they were converted to the distribution in space of the droplet position, no droplet speed dependence of the interfacial tension difference between the front and rear of the droplet was observed. On the other hand, the speed of both forward and backward flows increased as the droplet speed increased. By analysis of the above results with a simplified model, it was clarified that the forward flow driven by the interfacial tension gradient at the droplet front is actually important in the mechanism of the unidirectional self-propelled motion of a droplet.

Evaluating Factors Impacting Polymer Flooding in Hydrocarbon Reservoirs: Laboratory and Field-Scale Applications

Polymer flooding is an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method used to increase oil recovery from oil reservoirs beyond primary and secondary recovery. Although it is one of the most well-established methods of EOR, there are still continuous new developments and evaluations for this method. This is mainly attributed to the diverse polymers used, expansion of this method in terms of application, and the increase in knowledge pertaining to the topic due to the increase in laboratory testing and field applications. In this research, we perform a review of the factors impacting polymer flooding in both laboratory studies and field-based applications in order to create guidelines with respect to the parameters that should be included when designing a polymer flooding study or application. The main mechanism of polymer flooding is initially discussed, along with the types of polymers that can be used in polymer flooding. We then discuss the most prominent parameters that should be included when designing a polymer flooding project and, based on previous laboratory studies and field projects, discuss how these parameters impact the polymer itself and the flooding process. This research can provide guidelines for researchers and engineers for future polymer flooding research or field applications.

Diffusiophoresis of a Weakly Charged Liquid Metal Droplet

Diffusiophoresis of a weakly charged liquid metal droplet (LMD) is investigated theoretically, motivated by its potential application in drug delivery. A general analytical formula valid for weakly charged condition is adopted to explore the droplet phoretic behavior. We determined that a liquid metal droplet, which is a special category of the conducting droplet in general, always moves up along the chemical gradient in sole chemiphoresis, contrary to a dielectric droplet where the droplet tends to move down the chemical gradient most of the time. This suggests a therapeutic nanomedicine such as a gallium LMD is inherently superior to a corresponding dielectric liposome droplet in drug delivery in terms of self-guiding to its desired destination. The droplet moving direction can still be manipulated via the polarity dependence; however, there should be an induced diffusion potential present in the electrolyte solution under consideration, which spontaneously generates an extra electrophoresis component. Moreover, the smaller the conducting liquid metal droplet is, the faster it moves in general, which means a smaller LMD nanomedicine is preferred. These findings demonstrate the superior features of an LMD nanomedicine in drug delivery.

Time-Resolved Measurements of Interfacial Tension and Flow Speed of the Inclined Water Surface around a Self-propelled Camphor Boat by the Quasi-elastic Laser Scattering Method

An inclined liquid surface, such as a meniscus, plays an important role in advection and transport phenomena at a liquid's surface. However, there is no time-resolved measurement method for the interfacial tension of an inclined liquid-air interface. Here, a noninvasive method for simultaneous measurements of the interfacial tension and surface flow speed for an inclined water surface is described. This is an upgrade of the quasi-elastic laser scattering method with a closed-loop control system that introduces the dynamically tracked scattered and referential light into the detector. For the evaluation of the tilt compensation by dynamic tracking, the relationship between the apparent interfacial tension and surface inclination was examined for a water meniscus at 0-5° inclinations. It was also demonstrated that simultaneous measurements of the interfacial tension and surface flow speed around a self-propelled camphor boat on a pure water surface inclined by >3° at the back end of the boat are difficult to conduct accurately without dynamic tracking. Both the interfacial tension difference and the backward flow speed increased as the boat speed increased to 0.1 m/s; that had not been evaluated to date because of the high velocity of the boat and the surface inclination of the water around it. The direct experimental evaluation of the interfacial tension and the flow speed supported the model that the driving force of the camphor boat is the interfacial tension difference and the resistance force proportional to the boat velocity reduces its acceleration.
