Selective Styrene Oxidation to Benzaldehyde over Recently Developed Heterogeneous Catalysts

Sonocatalytic Activity of Porous Carbonaceous Materials for the Selective Oxidation of 4-Hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzyl Alcohol

Selective oxidation, which is crucial in diverse chemical industries, transforms harmful chemicals into valuable compounds. Heterogeneous sonocatalysis, an emerging sustainable approach, urges in-depth exploration. In this work, we investigated N-doped or non-doped carbonaceous materials as alternatives to scarce, economically sensitive metal-based catalysts. Having synthesized diverse carbons using a hard-template technique, we subjected them to sonication at frequencies of 22, 100, 500, and 800 kHz with a 50% amplitude. Sonochemical reaction catalytic tests considerably increased the catalytic activity of C-meso (non-doped mesoporous carbon material). The scavenger test showed a radical formation when this catalyst was used. N-doped carbons did not show adequate and consistent sonoactivity for the selective oxidation of 4-Hydroxy-3,5 dimethoxybenzyl alcohol in comparison with control conditions without sonication, which might be associated with an acid-base interaction between the catalysts and the substrate and sonoactivity prohibition by piridinic nitrogen in N-doped catalysts.

A Supported Palladium Phosphide Catalyst for the Wacker-Tsuji-Oxidation of Styrene

The substitution of pure metal particles by metal phosphides in catalysis represents a promising opportunity to lower the required metal quantity in the context of a sustainable use of metal resources. Herein we show the synthesis of palladium phosphide, Pd₃ P, supported on silica, which is tested as catalyst for the Wacker-Tsuji-oxidation of styrene to acetophenone. The synthesized catalyst is characterized by PXRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR, ICP-AES and XPS measurements. Four different reaction systems are investigated in this study including different co-catalysts and reaction media. Conversions of styrene up to 95 % with a selectivity of 73 % towards acetophenone are observed using Pd₃ P/SiO₂ as catalyst, CuCl₂ as co-catalyst and O₂ as oxidant. An enhanced selectivity up to 100 % towards acetophenone is obtained in other reaction systems. The use of Pd₃ P/SiO₂ leads to an optimized selectivity and conversion in the oxidation reaction in comparison with the purely Pd-based system Pd/SiO₂ . These results give an insight on how the incorporation of phosphorus has a great effect on the performance of heterogeneous catalysts.

Oxidation of Styrene to Benzaldehyde Catalyzed by Schiff Base Functionalized Triazolylidene Ni(II) Complexes

Four new Schiff base functionalized 1,2,3-triazolylidene nickel complexes, [Ni-(L1NHC)2](PF6)2; 3, [Ni-(L2NHC)2](PF6)2; 4, [Ni-(L3NHC)](PF6)2; 7 and [Ni-(L4NHC)](PF6)2; 8, (where L1NHC = (E)-3-methyl-1-propyl-4-(2-(((2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl)imino)methyl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium hexafluorophosphate(V), 1, L2NHC = (E)-3-methyl-4-(2-((phenethylimino)methyl)phenyl)-1-propyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium hexafluorophosphate(V), 2, L3NHC = 4,4′-(((1E)-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium) hexafluorophosphate(V), 5, and L4NHC = 4,4′-(((1E)-(butane-1,4-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium) hexafluorophosphate(V), 6), were synthesised and characterised by a variety of spectroscopic methods. Square planar geometry was proposed for all the nickel complexes. The catalytic potential of the complexes was explored in the oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde, using hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant in the presence of acetonitrile at 80 °C. All complexes showed good catalytic activity with high selectivity to benzaldehyde. Complex 3 gave a conversion of 88% and a selectivity of 70% to benzaldehyde in 6 h. However, complexes 4 and 7–8 gave lower conversions of 48–74% but with higher (up to 90%) selectivity to benzaldehyde. Results from kinetics studies determined the activation energy for the catalytic oxidation reaction as 65 ± 3 kJ/mol, first order in catalyst and fractional order in the oxidant. Results from UV-visible and CV studies of the catalytic activity of the Ni-triazolylidene complexes on styrene oxidation did not indicate any clear possibility of generation of a Ni(II) to Ni(III) catalytic cycle.

Enhancement of the Catalytic Activity of Double Metal Cyanides for the Oxidation of Styrene by the Presence of Included Alcohols

In recent years, people have focused on the development of simple and efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the styrene epoxidation reaction. In this work, a FeCo double metal cyanide (DMC) was modified with C1 to C6 linear alcohols, and the prepared materials were used to catalyze the reaction of styrene epoxidation in various solvents. It is noteworthy that the styrene conversion is mainly affected by modification with alcohols, while the selectivity in styrene oxide (SO) is obviously influenced by the solvent. FeCo DMC along with MeOH exhibits the best catalytic performance, with a conversion rate of 96% and a SO selectivity of 86%, in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Various physical and chemical methods were used to analyze the structures and compositions of the materials. To clarify the mechanism of the improvement, we set up an original approach to investigate the kinetics of the adsorption process between the oxidant and the catalyst, using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The obtained results illustrate that the adsorption process of the oxidant on the surface of FeCo DMC can be dramatically promoted by the presence of MeOH. Such a difference in adsorption thus explains the significant improvement of its catalytic activity by modification with MeOH. This study thus provides a new fundamental understanding of DMC catalysts for the styrene epoxidation reaction.

Boosting Electrochemical Styrene Transformation via Tandem Water Oxidation over a Single-Atom Cr1 /CoSe2 Catalyst

Electrocatalytic oxidation of organics using water as the oxygen source is a prospective but challenging method to produce high-value-added chemicals; especially, the competitive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits its efficiency. Herein, a tandem catalysis strategy based on a single-atom catalyst with Cr atoms atomically dispersed at a CoSe₂ support (Cr₁ /CoSe₂ ) is presented. Thereinto, Co and Cr sites are endowed with a specific function to activate water and styrene respectively, and the competition between the OER and styrene oxidation is turned into mutual benefits via cooperated active sites. Under a potential of 1.6 V_Ag/AgCl , excellent selectivity of 95% to benzaldehyde and a high conversion rate of styrene at 88% without any exogenous oxidizing reagent are achieved. Isotopic tracing, isotope-labeled in situ Raman spectra, and detailed theoretical calculation further reveal the tandem mechanism, showing that the transfer of *OOH intermediates from the Co to the Cr sites serves as a bridge to link the oxidation of water and styrene. This work develops a new strategy for the co-oxidation of multi-species based on tandem catalysis, providing novel insights for the design of single-atom catalysts.

Lanthanum-1,2,3-Triazole-Based 2D Coordination Polymer is an Efficient Catalyst for the Oxidation of Olefins

A new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer (CP) [La(C₁₈H₁₄N₃O₆)₂(H₂O)(OH)]_n has been prepared from a 1,2,3-triazole linker and lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate in DMF. The La-CP was characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, highlighting the binding motif at La ions and the fact that the material contains channels with entrapped solvent. The CP showed good catalytic activity for the oxidation of a wide variety of olefins (linear, cyclic, aromatic, and functionalized alkenes) to aldehydes. Mechanistic studies show that the oxidation reaction proceeds via a non-free-radical mechanism. The catalyst could be recovered and reused five times without major changes in activity for the oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Decorated Cu2O Heterogeneous Catalysts for Selective Oxidation of Styrene

The selective oxidation of styrene with highly efficient, environmentally benign, and cost-effective catalysts are of great importance for sustainable chemical processes. Here, we develop an in situ self-assembly strategy to decorate Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu-BDC-NH2 nanocrystals on Cu2O octahedra to construct a series of Cu2O@Cu-BDC-NH2 catalysts for selective oxidation of styrene. Using H2O2 as green oxidants, the optimized sample of Cu2O@Cu-BDC-NH2-8h could achieve 85% styrene conversion with 76% selectivity of benzaldehyde under a mild condition of 40 °C. The high performance of the as-prepared heterogeneous catalysts was attributed to the well-designed Cu+/Cu2+ interface between Cu2O and Cu-BDC-NH2 as well as the porous MOF shells composed of the uniformly dispersed Cu-BDC-NH2 nanocrystals. The alkaline properties of Cu2O and the –NH2 modification of MOFs enable the reaction to be carried out in a base-free condition, which simplifies the separation process and makes the catalytic system more environmentally friendly. Besides the Cu2O octahedra (od-Cu2O), the Cu2O cuboctahedrons (cod-Cu2O) were synthesized by adjusting the added polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and the obtained cod-Cu2O@Cu-BDC-NH2 composite also showed good catalytic performance. This work provides a useful strategy for developing highly efficient and environmentally benign heterogeneous catalysts for the selective oxidation of styrene.

Copper-complexed dipyridyl-pyridazine functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica as a heterogeneous catalyst for styrene epoxidation

A new heterogeneous catalyst has been synthesized by immobilization of a copper complex on dipyridyl-pyridazine functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica (dppz-vPMO). This ordered support was first prepared by a co-condensation reaction between vinyltriethoxysilane and 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane and further post-functionalized through a hetero Diels-Alder reaction with 3,6-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. Techniques such as XRD, N₂ isotherms, TEM, ¹³C NMR, XPS and DRIFT, among others, were employed to characterize the surface functionalized materials. These results have proven the ordered mesostructure of the materials as well as the presence of novel nitrogen-chelating heterocyclic compounds on the pore surface after the post-modification process. Additionally, the successful anchoring of a copper complex on the dipyridyl-pyridazine (dppz) ligands has been confirmed. The resulting material was evaluated as a heterogeneous catalyst in the epoxidation of styrene using tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant. Under the optimized reaction conditions, Cu@dppz-vPMO showed a high styrene conversion (86.0%) and a remarkable selectivity to styrene oxide (41.9%). Indeed, this catalyst provided excellent catalytic results in terms of stability, reaction rate, conversion and selectivity compared to other bipyridine-like copper catalysts.
