Abstract
New liquid crystalline hydrogen bonded 3- (or 4)-n-alkanoyloxy benzoic acids were synthesized and probed theoretically and experimentally. The molecular structures of these compounds were elucidated by proton NMR, carbon-13 NMR and elemental analyses. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the thermal and mesomorphic properties of all the symmetrical dimers that bearing identical alkanoyloxy chains. Moreover, polarized optical microscopy (POM) was used to determine their mesophases. The findings show that all the designed symmetrical dimers exhibit the smectic mesophase with relative thermal stability that depends on the length of their terminal side chain. Additionally, the experimental findings of the mesomorphic behavior are further supported by DFT calculations. The alkanoyloxy benzoic acid para-derivatives (In) were shown to be more stable than their meta-substituted (IIn) analogues due to stronger hydrogen bonding interactions. The computed reactivity parameters showed that the position of ester moiety has a significant impact on the acids reactivity. The absorbance spectra of both the 3- (or 4)-n-alkanoyloxy benzoic acids revealed a blue shift with the increment of the of alkyl chain size; however, the energy band gaps of 3-n-alkanoyloxy benzoic derivatives were found to be slightly higher than those of the 4-n-alkanoyloxy benzoic acids. Moreover, the photoluminescence spectrum of the prepared materials is rather broad, and exhibited a red shift as the alkyl chain length increases. The fluorescence lifetime shown to rise as alkyl chain length grows longer, and 3-n-alkanoyloxy benzoic acids have slightly longer lifetime compared to their 4-n-alkanoyloxy benzoic analogues.

Abstract
A new liquid crystal series of pyridin-2-yl 4-[4-(alkylphenyl)iminomethyl]benzoate was synthesized and characterized for their mesomorphic behavior. These compounds contain Schiff base and carboxylate ester mesogenic cores, in addition to terminal alkyl chains with a different number of carbons. The structures were confirmed via FT-IR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The phase transitions were studied by differential thermal analysis (DSC) and the mesophase types were identified by polarized optical microscopy (POM). A comparative study was performed between the synthesized compounds and previously reported compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were included in the study to compute the dipole moment and the polarizability, as well as the frontier molecular orbitals and the charge distribution mapping, which impact the terminal and lateral interactions of the compounds. The theoretical results were discussed to confirm the experimental data and explain the mesomorphic behavior of the compounds. Finally, the energy gap, global softness, and chemical hardness were calculated to determine the suitability of the liquid crystalline compounds to be employed in applications.

Abstract
New supramolecular complexes, based on H-bonding interactions between 4-(pyridin-4-yl) azo-(2-chlorophenyl) 4-alkoxybenzoates (Bn) and 4-[(4-(n-hexyloxy)phenylimino)methyl]benzoic acid (A6), were prepared and their thermal and mesomorphic properties investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) in order to confirm their H-bonding interactions. The mesophase behavior of each mixture was examined by DSC and polarized optical microscopy (POM). According to the findings of the study, in all of the designed mixtures, the introduction of laterally polar chlorine atom to the supramolecular complexes produces polymorphic compounds possessing smectic A, smectic C and nematic mesophases, in addition, all products have low melting transitions. Thermal stabilities of the associated phases depend on the position and orientation of the lateral polar Cl- atom as well as the length of terminal flexible alkoxy chain. Comparisons were made between the present lateral Cl- complexes and previously investigated laterally-neat complexes in order to investigate the impact of the addition, nature and orientation of polar substituent on the mesomorphic behavior. The investigations revealed that, the polarity and mesomeric nature of inserted lateral substituent into the base component play an essential role in affecting their mesomorphic properties. Furthermore, for current complexes, induced polymorphic phases have been found by introducing the chlorine atom.

Abstract
A homologous set of liquid crystalline materials (Tn) bearing Schiff base/ester linkages were prepared and investigated via experimental and theoretical techniques. Terminal flexible groups of different chain lengths were connected to the end of phenylbenzoate unit while the other end of molecules was attached to the heterocyclic pyridine moiety. The molecular structures of the designed molecules were evaluated by FT-IR, NMR spectroscopic analyses, whereas their mesomorphic properties were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). They all exhibited dimorphic properties with the exception of the members having the shortest and longest terminal flexible chains (n = 6 and 16), which were monomorphic. The T16 derivative was further found possessing purely smectic A (SmA) mesophase while others have their lengths covered by nematic (N) phase. Moreover, the computational evaluation of the azomethine derivatives was carried out using a DFT approach. The polarity of the investigated derivatives was predicted to be appreciably sensitive to the size of the system. Furthermore, the Frontier molecular orbitals analysis revealed various distributions of electron clouds at HOMO and LUMO levels.

Abstract
New homologues set liquid crystalline materials, based on furfural derivatives, namely, (E)-4-((furan-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate (Fn), were synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic and optical characteristics. The prepared homologues series constitutes three derivatives that bear different terminal flexible alkyl chain lengths that vary between 6 and 12 carbons and attached to the phenyl ring linked to the ester group. A furfural moiety is introduced into the other terminal of the molecular structure. Mesomorphic characterizations of the prepared derivatives were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Molecular structures were elucidated via elemental analyses, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM showed that all the synthesized furfural derivatives are purely nematogenic, exhibiting an enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophase, except for the longest chain derivative (F12) that is dimorphic possessing a monotropic smectic A phase and an enantiotropic N mesophase. Results indicated that the incorporation of the heterocyclic furfural ring into the molecular skeleton affected both the mesophase range and stability of investigated homologue. Analysis of the optical properties revealed that the shortest chain compound (F6) possesses two direct band gaps, at 2.73 and 3.64 eV, in addition to higher absorption than the higher homologues, F10 and F12. On the other hand, all the synthesized homologues (Fn) showed Ohmic behaviors, with electric resistances in the GΩ range. The values of the electrical resistances are 103.71, 12.91, and 196.85 GΩ at 0.05 V for F6, F10, and F12, respectively.

Abstract
Thermal and mesomorphic properties of possible 1:1 supramolecular complexes (SMCs) (Im/In) designed from two members of 4-[(4-(n-alkoxy)phenylimino)methyl]benzoic acid with symmetrical or un-symmetrical alkoxy terminal flexible chains (carbons of m and n = 6, 8 and 16), were analyzed by differential scan-calorimetry (DSC), thermogravemetric (TG) analysis, and their mesophases identified by polarized optical microscopy (POM). The equimolecular mixtures of the two acids possess symmetrical and un-symmetrical terminal lengths. The mesomorphic properties of the binary mixtures were examined as a function of the total alkoxy chain length on both sides. Results revealed that the nematic mesophase temperature range increases as the total terminal length increases for all designed un-symmetrical mixtures. A comparison was constructed between the formed SMCs and of those of the previously prepared 4-n-alkoxyphenylazo benzoic acids as well as the 4-n-alkoxy benzoic acids, to examine the impact of mesogenic core on the mesomorphic properties. The comparison indicated that as the mesogenic portion lengthens the thermal mesophase stability exhibits higher values of phase transition temperatures; whereas, the azo and Schiff base moieties exhibited near thermal properties.

Abstract
New asymmetrical Schiff base series based on lateral methoxy group in a central core, (E)-3-methoxy-4-(((4-methoxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate (An), were synthesized and their optical and mesomorphic characteristics were investigated. The lateral OCH3group was inserted in the central ring in ortho position with respect to the azomethine linkage. FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analyses were used to elucidate their molecular structures. Their mesomorphic behaviors were characterized by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These examinations indicated that all the designed series were monomorphic and possessed nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically, except A12 derivative which exhibited monotropic N phase. A comparative study was made between the present investigated series (An) and their corresponding isomers (Bn). The results revealed that the kind and stability of the mesophase as well as its temperature range are affected by the location and special orientation of the lateral methoxy group electric-resistance, conductance, energy-gap, and Urbach-energy were also reported for the present investigated An series. These results revealed that all electrodes exhibit Ohmic properties and electric-resistances in the GΩ range, whereas the electric resistance was decreased from 221.04 to 44.83 GΩ by lengthening the terminal alkoxy-chain to n = 12. The band gap of the An series was reduced from 3.43 to 2.89 eV by increasing the terminal chain length from n = 6 to n = 12 carbons. Therefore, controlling the length of the terminal chain can be used to improve the An series' electric conductivity and optical absorption, making it suitable for solar energy applications.

Abstract
New non-symmetrical 1:1 supramolecular H-bonded (SMHB) interactions, Ix/II, were designed between the non-mesomorphic fatty acids (palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids) and 4-tetradecyloxyphenylazo pyridine. Mesophase behaviors of the formed complexes were examined via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). In order to confirm the H-bond interaction formations within the prepared SMHB complexes, FT-IR spectroscopy was established whereby Fermi bands confirm these interactions. Mesomorphic investigations for all complexes indicated that, independent of the terminal alkenyl chains of the natural acids, induced dimorphic smectic phases were observed. The stability of formed mesophases was found to depend on the degree of un-saturation of the terminal alkenyl group of acid component.

Abstract
A new series of laterally fluorinated mesomorphic compounds, namely 2-fluoro-4-((4-(alkyloxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenyl 4-substitutedbenzoate (Inx) were prepared and evaluated for their mesophase behavior. The synthesized series constitutes five members that possess different terminally attached polar groups (X). Their molecular structures were confirmed by elemental analyses and both FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Examination of the prepared derivatives was conducted via experimental and theoretical tools. Mesomorphic investigations were carried by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC and POM measurements indicated that except for the un-substituted analogue, all other derivatives were purely nematogenic, possessing their nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically. This is to say that insertions of terminal polar substituents on their mesogenic structures induced the N phase. In addition, the location of lateral and terminal polar moieties played a considerable role in achieving good thermal N stability. Computational calculations were investigated to determine the deduced optimized molecular structures. Theoretical data indicated that both size and polarity of the terminal substituent (X) have essential impact on the thermal parameters and optical properties of possible geometries.

Abstract
Two new laterally di-substituted derivatives namely, (E)-4-(((2-Chlorophenyl)imino)methyl)-3-methoxyphenyl 4-(alkoxy)benzoate, were designed and investigated for their mesomorphic properties. Elucidation of their molecular structures was carried out by elemental analyses, NMR and FT-IR, spectroscopy. Phase transitions were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The optimized geometrical architectures of both compounds were deduced theoretically using GAUSSIAN 09 program. In order to establish the most probable conformation for each compound, four probable conformations were predicted for their positional isomers which vary according to the orientations of the two lateral groups. The results were used to correlate the experimental measurements with the predicted conformations. The study revealed that the investigated derivatives are non-mesomorphic and the orientations, as well as positions of the two-lateral groups, have a significant effect on the molecular packing of the molecules, their geometrical and thermal parameters.

Abstract
New homologues series of liquid crystalline materials namely, (E)-3-methoxy-4-[(p-tolylimino)methyl]phenyl 4-alkloxybenzoates (I-n), were designed and evaluated for their mesomorphic and optical behavior. The prepared series constitutes three members that differ from each other by the terminally attached alkoxy chain group, these vary between 6 and 12 carbons. A laterally OCH3 group is incorporated into the central benzene ring in meta position with respect to the ester moiety. Mesomorphic characterizations of the prepared derivatives are conducted using differential scanning-calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical-microscopy (POM). Molecular structures were elucidated by elemental analyses and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM investigations revealed that all the synthesized derivatives are purely nematogenic exhibiting only nematic (N) mesophase, except for the longest chain derivative (I-12) that is dimorphic possesses smectic A and N phases. Moreover, all members of the group have a wide mesomorphic range with high thermal nematic stability. A comparative study was established between the present derivative (I-6) and their previously prepared isomer. The results indicated that the location exchange of the polar compact group (CH3) influences the N mesophase stability and range. The electrical measurements revealed that all synthesized series I-n show Ohmic behaviors with effective electric resistances in the GΩ range. Under white light illumination, the effective electric conductivity for the compound I-8 is five times that obtained in dark conditions. This derivative also showed two direct optical band gaps in the UV and visible light range. In addition, I-6 has band energy gaps of values 1.07 and 2.79 eV, which are suitable for solar energy applications.

Abstract
A new set of laterally OCH3-substituted photoactive liquid crystalline analogues, 4-hexyloxy phenyl- imino-4ʹ-(3-methoxyphenyl)-4ʹ’-alkoxybenzoates, were synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic behavior. The prepared set constitutes five analogues that differ from each other by the terminally attached compact polar group. Characterization of the synthesized derivatives is conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and UV-spectroscopy. Molecular structures were elucidated by elemental analyses, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM investigations indicated that all the prepared derivatives are monomorphic possessing the nematic (N) phase, except for the unsubstituted derivative that is nonmesomorphic. On the other side, the photophysical study and the optical spectra measurements confirm the photoactivity of the present compounds under UV/visible irradiation. The measured optical spectra showed impressive enhancement in the optical absorption and reduction in the optical bandgap from 3.63 to 3.0 eV depending on the terminal group. From the study of the DC electric properties, the lowest resistance, 106.5 GΩ at scan rate 0.1 V/s, was observed for the I6d film with Cl terminal, which decreased to 49.5 GΩ by increasing the scan rate to 0.5 V/s. Moreover, the electrical conductance is decreased from 9.39 pS to 1.35 pS at scan rate 0.1 V/s by changing the terminal group from Cl to F. The enhanced optical absorption and the reduced energy gap make the optimized samples suitable material for solar energy applications.

Abstract
A new laterally fluorinated unsymmetric liquid crystalline homologous series, based on cinnamate linkage, named 2-fluoro-4-(4-(alkoxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenyl cinnamate (In), was synthesized and evaluated via different experimental and computational tools. The series had different terminal alkoxy-chain lengths with a lateral F atom in the meta position with respect to the azo moiety. The experimental mesomorphic and optical investigations were carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Theoretical calculations and geometrical parameter predictions were conducted using the DFT program method at B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory. The results revealed that all the designed compounds exhibited the nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically. The nematic stability and temperature range were impacted by the terminal alkoxy chain length. Compounds with the shortest chains (I6 and I8) showed a monotropic smectic A (SmA) phase, while the longest chain derivative, I16, possessed enantiotropic Sm A phase. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) predictions were correlated with the practically observed data from the mesomorphic investigations. Data revealed that the terminal alkoxy and lateral F groups had an essential impact on the total energy of possible geometrical structures and their physical and thermal parameters.

Abstract
New mesomorphic series, 4-hexadecyloxy phenyl-imino-4'-(3-methoxyphenyl)-4″-alkoxybenzoates (An), were prepared and investigated with different thermal and mesomorphic techniques. The synthesized homologous series constitutes four members that differ from each other in the terminal length of flexible chain (n) attached to phenyl ester moiety, which varies between n = 6, 8, 10, and 12 carbons. A lateral CH3O group is attached to the central benzene ring in the meta position with respect to the ester moiety. Molecular structures of all newly prepared homologues were elucidated via FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Mesomorphic and thermal properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the mesophases identified by polarized optical microscopy (POM). DSC and POM examinations revealed that all members of the present series (An) exhibit a purely enantiotropic nematic (N) phase. Comparative evaluations and binary phase diagrams were established between the present homologues and their corresponding shorter one (Bn). The examination revealed that, the length of the flexible alkoxy chain incorporated into the phenylimino moiety is highly effective on the temperature range and stability of the mesophase observed. With respect to the binary mixtures An/Bn, the exhibited N phase showed to cover the whole composition range with eutectic behavior.

Synthetic, Mesomorphic, and DFT Investigations of New Nematogenic Polar Naphthyl Benzoate Ester Derivatives. MATERIALS 2021; 14:ma14102587. Abstract
Four new non-symmetrical derivatives based on central naphthalene moiety, 4-((4–(alkoxy)phenyl) diazenyl)naphthalen–1–yl 4–substitutedbenzoate (In/x), were prepared, and their properties were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The synthesized materials bear two wing groups: an alkoxy chain of differing proportionate length (n = 6 and 16 carbons) and one terminal attached to a polar group, X. Their molecular structures were elucidated via elemental analyses and FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) were carried out to evaluate their mesomorphic properties. The results of the experimental investigations revealed that all the synthesized analogues possess only an enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophase with a high thermal stability and broad range. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were in accordance with the experimental investigations and revealed that all prepared materials are to be linear and planar. Moreover, the rigidity of the molecule increased when an extra fused ring was inserted into the center of the structural shape, so its thermal and geometrical parameters were affected. Energy gap predictions confirmed that the I16/c derivative is more reactive than other compounds.
