Performance of TiO2-Based Tubular Membranes in the Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Compounds

This work presents the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water with TiO₂ and TiO₂/Ag membranes prepared by immobilising photocatalysts on ceramic porous tubular supports. The permeation capacity of TiO₂ and TiO₂/Ag membranes was checked before the photocatalytic application, showing high water fluxes (≈758 and 690 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1, respectively) and <2% rejection against the model pollutants sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DBS) and dichloroacetic acid (DCA). When the membranes were submerged in the aqueous solutions and irradiated with UV-A LEDs, the photocatalytic performance factors for the degradation of DCA were similar to those obtained with suspended TiO₂ particles (1.1-fold and 1.2-fold increase, respectively). However, when the aqueous solution permeated through the pores of the photocatalytic membrane, the performance factors and kinetics were two-fold higher than for the submerged membranes, mostly due to the enhanced contact between the pollutants and the membranes photocatalytic sites where reactive species were generated. These results confirm the advantages of working in a flow-through mode with submerged photocatalytic membranes for the treatment of water polluted with persistent organic molecules, thanks to the reduction in the mass transfer limitations.

Improving the Dispersibility of TiO2 in the Colloidal System Using Trifunctional Spherosilicates

Titanium dioxide is a commonly used ingredient in cosmetics acting as a thickening agent and inorganic UV filter. However, TiO₂ is difficult to disperse, which causes problems in spreading the formulations. The solution to this problem is to modify the titanium dioxide surface to change its properties by creation of the new type of hybrid inorganic-organic UV filter. Therefore, this study aimed to functionalize titanium dioxide with organosilicon compounds and determine how this modification will affect the dispersibility of TiO₂ in the colloidal system and the stability of emulsions. First, the functionalized octaspherosilicates were obtained and characterized. Next, the synthesized compounds were applied as modifiers for titanium dioxide and were analyzed by FT-IR, UV-Vis, and laser diffraction. Furthermore, the hydrophilic-hydrophobic character was assessed by measuring the contact angle. The new materials were introduced into emulsions and the formulations were analyzed in terms of particle size distribution and stability by multiple light scattering. It was found that the modification of titanium dioxide with spherosilicates significantly improved both the stability of emulsion and the dispersibility of novel materials in the colloidal system compared to nonmodified TiO₂. The covalent binding of the modifier with the titanium dioxide had an impact on the stability of the emulsion.

Recent Advances in Black TiO2 Nanomaterials for Solar Energy Conversion

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanomaterials have been widely used in photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental remediation due to their advantages of low cost, chemical stability, and relatively high photo-activity. However, applications of TiO₂ have been restricted in the ultraviolet range because of the wide band gap. Broadening the light absorption of TiO₂ nanomaterials is an efficient way to improve the photocatalytic activity. Thus, black TiO₂ with extended light response range in the visible light and even near infrared light has been extensively exploited as efficient photocatalysts in the last decade. This review represents an attempt to conclude the recent developments in black TiO₂ nanomaterials synthesized by modified treatment, which presented different structure, morphological features, reduced band gap, and enhanced solar energy harvesting efficiency. Special emphasis has been given to the newly developed synthetic methods, porous black TiO₂, and the approaches for further improving the photocatalytic activity of black TiO₂. Various black TiO₂, doped black TiO₂, metal-loaded black TiO₂ and black TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic applications and mechanisms in the field of energy and environment are summarized in this review, to provide useful insights and new ideas in the related field.
