Plasmonic Spherical Nanoparticles Coupled with Titania Nanotube Arrays Prepared by Anodization as Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Applications: A Review

Mesoporous Ag@WO3 core-shell, an investigation at different concentrated environment employing laser ablation in liquid

In this study, silver-tungsten oxide core-shell nanoparticles (Ag-WO3 NPs) were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquid employing a (1.06 µm) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, at different Ag colloidal concentration environment (different core concentration). The produced Ag-WO3 core-shell NPs were subjected to characterization using UV-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy, electrical analysis, and photoluminescence PL. The UV-visible spectra exhibited distinct absorption peaks at around 200 and 405 nm, which attributed to the occurrence of surface Plasmon resonance of Ag NPs and WO3 NPs, respectively. The absorbance values of the Ag-WO3 core-shell NPs increased as the core concentrations rose, while the band gap decreased by 2.73-2.5 eV, The (PL) results exhibited prominent peaks with a central wavelength of 456, 458, 458, 464, and 466 nm. Additionally, the PL intensity of the Ag-WO3-NP samples increased proportionally with the concentration of the core. Furthermore, the redshift seen at the peak of the PL emission band may be attributed to the quantum confinement effect. EDX analysis can verify the creation process of the Ag-WO3 core-shell nanostructure. XRD analysis confirms the presence of Ag and WO3 (NPs). The TEM images provided a good visualization of the core-spherical shell structure of the Ag-WO3 core-shell NPs. The average size of the particles ranged from 30.5 to 89 (nm). The electrical characteristics showed an increase in electrical conductivity from (5.89 × 10-4) (Ω cm)-1 to (9.91 × 10-4) (Ω cm)-1, with a drop in average activation energy values of (0.155 eV) and (0.084 eV) at a concentration of 1.6 μg/mL of silver.

Application of Anodic Titanium Oxide Modified with Silver Nanoparticles as a Substrate for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

The formation of nanostructured anodic titanium oxide (ATO) layers was explored on pure titanium by conventional anodizing under two different operating conditions to form nanotube and nanopore morphologies. The ATO layers were successfully developed and showed optimal structural integrity after the annealing process conducted in the air atmosphere at 450 °C. The ATO nanopore film was thinner (1.2 +/- 0.3 μm) than the ATO nanotube layer (3.3 +/- 0.6 μm). Differences in internal pore diameter were also noticeable, i.e., 88 +/- 9 nm and 64 +/- 7 nm for ATO nanopore and nanotube morphology, respectively. The silver deposition on ATO was successfully carried out on both ATO morphologies by silver electrodeposition and Ag colloid deposition. The most homogeneous silver deposit was prepared by Ag electrodeposition on the ATO nanopores. Therefore, these samples were selected as potential surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate, and evaluation using pyridine (aq.) as a testing analyte was conducted. The results revealed that the most intense SERS signal was registered for nanopore ATO/Ag substrate obtained by electrodeposition of silver on ATO by 2.5 min at 1 V from 0.05M AgNO3 (aq.) (analytical enhancement factor, AEF ~5.3 × 104) and 0.025 M AgNO3 (aq.) (AEF ~2.7 × 102). The current findings reveal a low-complexity and inexpensive synthesis of efficient SERS substrates, which allows modification of the substrate morphology by selecting the parameters of the synthesis process.

WO3 Nanopores Array Modified by Au Trisoctahedral NPs: Formation, Characterization and SERS Application

The WO₃ nanopores array was obtained by an anodization method in aqueous solution with addition of F^- ions. Several factors affecting the final morphology of the samples were tested such as potential, time, and F^- concentrations. The morphology of the formed nanopores arrays was examined by SEM microscopy. It was found that the optimal time of anodization process is in the range of 0.5-1 h. The nanopores size increased with the increasing potential. The XPS measurements do not show any contamination by F^- on the surface, which is common for WO_x samples formed by an anodization method. Such a layer was successfully modified by anisotropic gold trisoctahedral NPs of various sizes. The Au NPs were obtained by seed-mediated growth method. The shape and size of Au NPs was analysed by TEM microscopy and optical properties by UV-VIS spectroscopy. It was found that the WO₃-Au platform has excellent SERS activity. The R6G molecules could be detected even in the range of 10^-9 M.

Nanofunctionalization of Additively Manufactured Titanium Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Measurements

Powder bed fusion using a laser beam (PBF-LB) is a commonly used additive manufacturing (3D printing) process for the fabrication of various parts from pure metals and their alloys. This work shows for the first time the possibility of using PBF-LB technology for the production of 3D titanium substrates (Ti 3D) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements. Thanks to the specific development of the 3D titanium surface and its nanoscale modification by the formation of TiO2 nanotubes with a diameter of ~80 nm by the anodic oxidation process, very efficient SERS substrates were obtained after deposition of silver nanoparticles (0.02 mg/cm2, magnetron sputtering). The average SERS enhancement factor equal to 1.26 × 106 was determined for pyridine (0.05 M + 0.1 M KCl), as a model adsorbate. The estimated enhancement factor is comparable with the data in the literature, and the substrate produced in this way is characterized by the high stability and repeatability of SERS measurements. The combination of the use of a printed metal substrate with nanofunctionalization opens a new path in the design of SERS substrates for applications in analytical chemistry. Methods such as SEM scanning microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to determine the morphology, structure and chemical composition of the fabricated materials.
