Assembling Ultrafine SnO2 Nanoparticles on MIL-101(Cr) Octahedrons for Efficient Fuel Photocatalytic Denitrification

Mixed valence copper oxide composites derived from metal-organic frameworks for efficient visible light fuel denitrification

The construction of heterojunctions has been used to optimize photocatalyst fuel denitrification. In this work, HKUST-1(Cu) was used as a sacrificial template to synthesize a composite material CuxO (CuO/Cu2O) that retains the original MOF framework for photocatalytic fuel denitrification by calcination at different temperatures. By adjusting the temperature, the content of CuO/Cu2O can be changed to control the performance and structure of CuxO-T effectively. The results show that CuxO-300 has the best photocatalytic performance, and its denitrification rate reaches 81% after 4 hours of visible light (≥420 nm) irradiation. Through the experimental analysis of pyridine's infrared and XPS spectra, we found that calcination produces CuxO-T mixed-valence metal oxide, which can create more exposed Lewis acid sites in the HKUST-1(Cu) framework. This leads to improved pyridine adsorption capabilities. The mixed-valence metal oxide forms a type II semiconductor heterojunction, which accelerates carrier separation and promotes photocatalytic activity for pyridine denitrification.

Photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline antibiotic over MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH nanocomposite as stable and efficient visible light responsive photocatalyst

Designing an inexpensive, easily synthesized, stable and efficient photocatalyst is a major challenge in photocatalysis area, especially when photo-reaction is performed in aquatic medium to degrade organic pollutants. To this aim, nano-sized MIL-101(Cr) (MIL = Materials Institute Lavoisier), as chemically tolerant metal-organic framework (MOF), was simply prepared via HF-free hydrothermal synthesis procedure. In order to decorate amorphous FeOOH quantum dots (QDs) on the surface of this MOF, various amounts of FeOOH QDs (i.e., 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%) were synthesized in the presence of MIL-101(Cr) to prepare MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH(x%) nanocomposites. Decoration of such iron oxide quantum dots on the surface of MIL-101(Cr) and investigation of its activity in photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic is reported here for the first time. Among the synthesized nanocomposites, MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH(15%) demonstrated superior photo-Fenton activity in degradation of TC (80%) at short reaction time under optimum reaction condition using the energy-efficient white LED lamps as visible light source. It was observed that the synergy between any component of this photo-Fenton system such as nanocomposite, hydrogen peroxide and visible light is the main reason for enhancement of TC removal over time. Also, neither MIL-101(Cr) nor FeOOH QDs exhibited poor degradation efficiency, which implies the positive role of the coupling of these materials. Furthermore, the stability and recoverability of MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH(15%) nanocomposite was investigated in four photo-Fenton cycles, which no significant decrease in TC degradation performance was observed.

Amino-functionalized MIL-125(Ti) for photodenitrification of pyridine in fuels via coordination activation by unsaturated Ti4+ centers

Due to their explicit structure, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been supposed to be credible platforms to research the micro-mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this study, amino-functionalized MOFs (MIL-125(Ti)-NH₂ (denoted as MTi), UiO-66(Zr)-NH₂ (denoted as UZr) and MIL-68(In)-NH₂ (denoted as MIn)) with three different metal centers were synthesized and applied for the denitrification of simulated fuels under visible light irradiation, during which pyridine was used as a typical nitrogen-containing compound. The results showed that MTi had the best activity among the above three MOFs, and the denitrogenation rate increased to 80% after 4 h of visible light irradiation. On the grounds of the theoretical calculation of pyridine adsorption and actual activity experiments, it can be presumed that the unsaturated Ti⁴⁺ metal centers should be the key active sites. Meanwhile, the XPS and in situ infrared results verified that the coordinatively unsaturated Ti⁴⁺ sites facilitate the activation of pyridine molecules through the surface -N⋯Ti- coordination species. The coordination-photocatalysis synergism promotes the efficiency of photocatalytic performance and the corresponding mechanism is proposed.

One-Pot Synthesis of N-Doped NiO for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with Efficient Charge Transfer

The green and clean sunlight-driven catalytic conversion of CO₂ into high-value-added chemicals can simultaneously solve the greenhouse effect and energy problems. The controllable preparation of semiconductor catalyst materials and the study of refined structures are of great significance for the in-depth understanding of solar-energy-conversion technology. In this study, we prepared nitrogen-doped NiO semiconductors using a one-pot molten-salt method. The research shows that the molten-salt system made NiO change from p-type to n-type. In addition, nitrogen doping enhanced the adsorption of CO₂ on NiO and increased the separation of photogenerated carriers on the NiO. It synergistically optimized the CO₂-reduction system and achieved highly active and selective CO₂ photoreduction. The CO yield on the optimal nitrogen-doped photocatalyst was 235 μmol·g^-1·h^-1 (selectivity 98%), which was 16.8 times that of the p-type NiO and 2.4 times that of the n-type NiO. This can be attributed to the fact that the nitrogen doping enhanced the oxygen vacancies of the NiOs and their ability to adsorb and activate CO₂ molecules. Photoelectrochemical characterization also confirmed that the nitrogen-doped NiO had excellent electron -transfer and separation properties. This study provides a reference for improving NiO-based semiconductors for photocatalytic CO₂ reduction.

Surface Coordination of Pd/ZnIn2S4 toward Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Pyridine Denitrification

New surface coordination photocatalytic systems that are inspired by natural photosynthesis have significant potential to boost fuel denitrification. Despite this, the direct synthesis of efficient surface coordination photocatalysts remains a major challenge. Herein, it is verified that a coordination photocatalyst can be constructed by coupling Pd and CTAB-modified ZnIn₂S₄ semiconductors. The optimized Pd/ZnIn₂S₄ showed a superior degradation rate of 81% for fuel denitrification within 240 min, which was 2.25 times higher than that of ZnIn₂S₄. From the in situ FTIR and XPS spectra of 1% Pd/ZnIn₂S₄ before and after pyridine adsorption, we find that pyridine can be selectively adsorbed and form Zn⋅⋅⋅C-N or In⋅⋅⋅C-N on the surface of Pd/ZnIn₂S₄. Meanwhile, the superior electrical conductivity of Pd can be combined with ZnIn₂S₄ to promote photocatalytic denitrification. This work also explains the surface/interface coordination effect of metal/nanosheets at the molecular level, playing an important role in photocatalytic fuel denitrification.
