Spin Orbit Coupling in Orthogonal Charge Transfer States: (TD-)DFT of Pyrene-Dimethylaniline

Quasi-intrinsic thiobase derivatives as potential targeted photosensitizers in two-photon photodynamic therapy

In this study, a set of potential quasi-intrinsic photosensitizers for two-photon photodynamic therapy (PDT) are proposed based on the unnatural 2-amino-8-(1'-β-ᴅ-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-imidazo[1,2-ɑ]-1,3,5-triazin-4(8H)-one (P), which is paired with the 6-amino-5-nitro-3-(1'-β-ᴅ-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-2(1H)-pyridone (Z) and can specifically recognize breast and liver cancer cells. Herein, the effects of sulfur substitution and electron-donating/electron-withdrawing groups on the photophysical properties in aqueous solution are systematically investigated. The one- and two-photon absorption spectra evidence that the modifications could result in red-shifted absorption wavelength and large two-photon absorption cross-section, which contributes to selective excitation and provides effective PDT for deep-seated tissues. To ensure the efficient triplet state population, the singlet-triplet energy gaps and spin-orbit coupling constants were examined, which is responsible for a rapid intersystem crossing rate. Furthermore, these thiobase derivatives are characterized by the long-lived T1 state and the large energy gap for radiationless transition to ensure the generation of cytotoxic singlet oxygen.

Controlling Molecular Orientation of Small Molecular Dopant-Free Hole-Transport Materials: Toward Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have great potential for future application. However, the commercialization of PSCs is limited by the prohibitively expensive and doped hole-transport materials (HTMs). In this regard, small molecular dopant-free HTMs are promising alternatives because of their low cost and high efficiency. However, these HTMs still have a lot of space for making further progress in both efficiency and stability. This review firstly provides outlining analyses about the important roles of molecular orientation when further enhancements in device efficiency and stability are concerned. Then, currently studied strategies to control molecular orientation in small molecular HTMs are presented. Finally, we propose an outlook aiming to obtain optimized molecular orientation in a cost-effective way.

Unraveling the Efficiency of Thioxanthone Based Triplet Sensitizers: A Detailed Theoretical Study

Photochemical activation by triplet photosensitizers is highly expedient for a green focus society. In this work, we have theoretically probed excited state characteristics of thioxanthone and its derivatives for their triplet harvesting efficiency using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Absorption and triplet energies corroborate well with the available experimental data. Our results predict that both the S₁ and T₁ states are π-π^* in nature, which renders a high oscillator strength for S₀ to S₁ transition. Major triplet exciton conversion occurs through intersystem crossing (ISC) channel between the S₁ (¹ π-π^* ) and high energy ³ n- π^* state. Apart from that, there is both radiative and non-radiative channel from S₁ to S₀ , which competes with the ISC channel and reduces the triplet harvesting efficiency. For thioxanthones with -OMe (Me=Methyl) or -F substitution at 2 or 2' positions, the ISC channel is not energetically feasible, causing sluggish intersystem crossing quantum yield (Φ_ISC ). For unsubstituted thioxanthone and for isopropyl substitution at 2' position, the S₁ -T₁ gap is slightly positive ( Δ E S 1 - 3 n π * ${\Delta {E}_{{S}_{1}-{}^{3}n{\rm \pi }{\rm {^\ast}}}}$ ), rendering a lower triplet harvesting efficiency. For systems with -OMe or -F substitution at 3 or 3' position of thioxanthone, because of buried π state and high energy π^* state, the S₁ -³ nπ^* gap becomes negative. This leads to a high Φ_ISC (>0.9), which is key to being an effective photocatalyst.
