Abstract
Mechanically fibrillated cellulose nanofibers, known as fib-CNF (fiber length: 500 nm; diameter: 45 nm), are used in composites and as a natural thickener in foods. To evaluate their safety, we conducted a 28-day study in mice with inhalation exposure at 0.2 mg/body and oral administration of 400 mg/kg/day. Inhalation exposure to fib-CNF caused transient weight loss, changes in blood cell counts, and increased lung weights. These changes were attributed to adaptive responses. The oral administration of fib-CNF for 28 days resulted in no apparent toxic effects except for a slight decrease in platelet counts. The fib-CNF administration using the protocols studied appears to be safe in mice.

Abstract
The use of nanocellulose (NC) has increased significantly in the food industry, as subtypes such as cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) or bacterial cellulose (BC) have been demonstrated to be a source of insoluble fiber with important benefits for human health. Despite these advantages, and due to its nanoscale size, NC must be assessed from a safety perspective that considers its exposure, fate, and biological effects in order to help more accurately estimate its potential hazards. The exposure routes of humans to NC include (i) ingestion during consumption of foods that contain cellulose as a food ingredient or (ii) contact of food with cellulose-containing materials, such as its packaging. That is why it is important to understand the potentially toxic effects that nanomaterials can have on human health, understanding that the different types of NC behave differently in terms of their ingestion, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. By analysing both in vitro and in vivo studies, the purpose of this paper is to present the most recent findings on the different types of NC and their safety when used in food. In addition, it provides an overview of relevant studies into NC and its health benefits when used as a food additive.

Abstract
Beverage mixtures based on pineapple (Ananas comosus) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) juice as a ready-to-drink product were developed, and their physicochemical, nutritional, and sensory properties were evaluated. Four different concentrations of turmeric juice (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% (v/v)) were added to pineapple juice to make turmeric-fortified pineapple (TFP) juice samples. Pineapple juice without turmeric was the control. The L*, a*, b*, titratable acidity (TA), total antioxidant capacity, and %DPPH scavenging values, as well as the concentrations of the phenolic compounds curcumin and demethoxycurcumin, were significantly increased with increasing turmeric concentration. Thirty volatile compounds were detected in the mixed juice samples with turmeric. Most of the turmeric-specific compounds, including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and turmerones, were detected in the TFP juice samples. While the antioxidant activity of the juice samples increased with increasing turmeric concentration, the pineapple juice fortified with 10% turmeric (10%T) had the best overall quality as determined by panelists. Greater concentrations of turmeric were associated with decreased palatability due to reduced mouthfeel and sweetness and increased aftertaste and sourness. These results suggest that the 10%T juice could be developed into a commercial functional beverage with increased overall flavor and nutritional quality.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (CLR) is a safe natural herbal medicine, and which has been widely used for centuries as functional food and health products, but its effects on angiogenesis and related underlying mechanism remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY The abnormal angiogenesis is closely related with various diseases, and therefore the precise control of angiogenesis is of great importance. The well-known angiogenic factor, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), mediates angiogenesis and induces multiple signalling pathways via binding to VEGF receptor (VEGFR). The attenuation of VEGF-triggered angiogenic-related signalling pathways may relieve various diseases through suppression of angiogenesis. Here, we aimed to elucidate that CLR extract could exert striking anti-angiogenic activities both in vitro and in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS The viability of human umbilical vascular endothelial cell (HUVEC) was examined by LDH and MTT assays. Migrative and invasive ability of the endothelial cells were independently evaluated by wound healing and transwell assays. The activities of CLR extract on in vitro angiogenesis was tested by tube formation assay. In vivo vascularization was determined by using zebrafish embryo model in the present of CLR extract. Western blotting was applied to determine the phosphorylated levels of VEGFR2, PI3K, AKT and eNOS. Besides, the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were separately evaluated by Griess assay and 2'7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate reaction. In addition, the cell migrative ability of cancer cell was estimated by using cultured human colon carcinoma cells (HT-29 cell line), and immunofluorescence assay was applied to evaluate the effect of CLR extract on nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 subunit in the VEGF-treated HT-29 cultures. RESULTS CLR extract significantly suppressed a series of VEGF-mediated angiogenic responses, including endothelial cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and tube formation. Moreover, CLR extract reduced in vivo sub-intestinal vessel formation in zebrafish embryo model. Mechanistically, the extract of CLR attenuated the VEGF-triggered signalling, as demonstrated by decreased level of phosphorylated VEGFR2 and subsequently inactivated its downstream regulators, e.g. phospho-PI3K, phospho-AKT and phospho-eNOS. The production of NO and formation of ROS were markedly inhibited in HUVECs. Furthermore, CLR extract suppressed cell migration and NF-κB translocation in cultured HT-29 cells. CONCLUSIONS These preclinical findings demonstrate that the extract of CLR remarkably attenuates angiogenesis and which has great potential as a natural drug candidate with excellent anti-angiogenic activity.

Abstract
Medicinal or herbal spices are grown in tropical moist evergreen forestland, surrounding most of the tropical and subtropical regions of Eastern Himalayas in India (Sikkim, Darjeeling regions), Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, a few Central Asian countries, Middle East, USA, Europe, South East Asia, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. According to the cultivation region surrounded, economic value, and vogue, these spices can be classified into major, minor, and colored tropical spices. In total, 24 tropical spices and herbs (cardamom, black jeera, fennel, poppy, coriander, fenugreek, bay leaves, clove, chili, cassia bark, black pepper, nutmeg, black mustard, turmeric, saffron, star anise, onion, dill, asafoetida, celery, allspice, kokum, greater galangal, and sweet flag) are described in this review. These spices show many pharmacological activities like anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, central nervous system, and antioxidant activities. Numerous bioactive compounds are present in these selected spices, such as 1,8-cineole, monoterpene hydrocarbons, γ-terpinene, cuminaldehyde, trans-anethole, fenchone, estragole, benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, eugenol, cinnamaldehyde, piperine, linalool, malabaricone C, safrole, myristicin, elemicin, sinigrin, curcumin, bidemethoxycurcumin, dimethoxycurcumin, crocin, picrocrocin, quercetin, quercetin 4'-O-β-glucoside, apiol, carvone, limonene, α-phellandrene, galactomannan, rosmarinic acid, limonene, capsaicinoids, eugenol, garcinol, and α-asarone. Other than that, various spices are used to synthesize different types of metal-based and polymer-based nanoparticles like zinc oxide, gold, silver, selenium, silica, and chitosan nanoparticles which provide beneficial health effects such as antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, enzyme retardation effect, and antimicrobial activity. The nanoparticles can also be used in environmental pollution management like dye decolorization and in chemical industries to enhance the rate of reaction by the use of catalytic activity of the nanoparticles. The nutritional value, phytochemical properties, health advantages, and both traditional and modern applications of these spices, along with their functions in food fortification, have been thoroughly discussed in this review.
