A Significant Fluorescence Turn-On Probe for the Recognition of Al3+ and Its Application

A Novel AIE-Active Salicylaldehyde-Schiff Base Probe with Carbazole Group for Al3+ Detection in Aqueous Solution

A donor-acceptor Schiff-base fluorescent probe BKS with chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism was designed and synthesized via benzophenone(Acceptor), salicylaldehyde and carbazole(Donor) for Al3+ detection, which exhibited typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. BKS probe could provide outstanding selectivity to Al3+ with a prominent fluorescence "turn-on" at 545 nm in a wide pH range from 2 to 11. By the Job's plot, the binding stoichiometry ratio of probe BKS to Al3+ was determined 1:1. The proposed strategy offered a very low limit of detection at 1.486 µM in THF/H2O(V/V = 1:4, HEPBS = 10 mM, pH = 7.40), which was significantly lower than the standard of WHO (Huang et al., Microchem J 151:104195, 2019)-(Yongjie Ding et al., Spectrochim Acta Mol Biomol Spectrosc 167:59-65, 2021) guidelines for drinking water. BKS probe could provide a wider linear detection range of 50 to 500 µM. Furthermore, the probe could hardly be interfered by other examined metal ions. The analysis of Al3+ in real water samples with appropriate recovery (100.72 to 102.85) with a relative standard deviation less than 2.82% indicated the accuracy and precision of BKS probe and the great potential in the environmental monitoring of Al3+.

Development of a water-soluble fluorescent Al3+ probe based on phenylsulfonyl-2-pyrone in biological systems

BACKGROUND

Al exists naturally in the environment and is an important component in acidic soils, which harm almost all plants. Furthermore, Al is widely used in food additives, cosmetics, and medicines, resulting in living organisms ingesting traces of Al orally or dermally every day. Accordingly, Al accumulates in the body, which can cause negative bioeffects and diseases, and this concern is gaining increasing attention. Therefore, to detect and track Al in the environment and in living organisms, the development of novel Al-selective probes that are water-soluble and exhibit fluorescence at long wavelengths is necessary.

RESULTS

In this study, an Al3+-selective fluorescent probe PSP based on a novel pyrone molecule was synthesized and characterized to detect and track Al in biological systems. PSP exhibited fluorescence enhancement at 580 nm in the presence of Al3+ in aqueous media. Binding analysis using Job's plot and structural analysis using 1H NMR showed that PSP formed a 1:1 complex with Al3+ at the two carbonyl groups of the dimethyl malonate of the pyrone ring. Upon testing in biological systems, PSP showed good cell membrane permeability, detected intracellular Al3+ in human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231), and successfully imaged accumulated Al3+ in Microcystis aeruginosa and the larvae of Rheocricotopus species.

SIGNIFICANCE

The novel Al3+-selective fluorescent probe PSP is highly effective and is expected to aid in elucidating the role of Al3+ in the environment and living organisms.

A novel isophorone-based fluorescent probe for recognizing Al3+ and its bioimaging in plants

Aluminium ions (Al3+) are widely present in industries and daily life and are closely related to human health and environmental protection. Therefore, it is crucial to detect their concentration. In this paper, a convenient and reliable small molecule fluorescent probe based on a dicyanoisophorone Schiff base and 2-pyridinecarbohydrazide has been developed. The probe is capable of selectively detecting Al3+ with the advantages of near-infrared emission (maximum emission wavelength of 625 nm), good selectivity, high sensitivity (detection limit of 2.18 × 10-7 M) and fast response time (15 s). It has good potential for rapid detection and visual tracking of Al3+ in aqueous solutions and plant bodies.

"Lighting up" fluorescence precise recognition of Al3+ with an effective fluorescence detection using a Bisphenol A-based sensor

Although aluminum is a ubiquitous metal in the ecosystem and has numerous critical roles in both the medicinal and biological fields, human daily life is seriously threatened by its assorted harmful influences. By this virtue, tracking the amount of aluminum byrapid sensitive and selective recognition methodologies is of great importance. Based on this, a novel fluorescent chemosensor 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(2-(((-2-hydroxybenzylidene) hydrazineylidene)-methyl)phenol) (BFASA) capable of recognizing Al³⁺ in a medium was constructed via an easy Schiff-base reaction between bisphenol A-containing molecule and the salicylaldehyde. The metal-binding studies of BFASA indicated a drastically enhanced emission with color alteration from colorless to green establishing the utility of BFASA against monitoring of Al³⁺ and only Cu²⁺/Al³⁺ significantly enhanced the absorbance intensity of the probe solution at 433 and 406, respectively. Its ability to selectively sense Al³⁺ demonstrated "switch-on" fluorescence responses for Al³⁺ with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.56 μM and good selectivity, and pH adaptation range (5-8). The stoichiometric ratio of BFASA against the Al³⁺ was verified by the Job's plot and TOF-MS analysis and determined as 1:2. To make the recognition process inexpensively, viable and straightforward, Smartphone application of BFASA was effectively applied to Al³⁺ sensing, which could benefit the on-site Al³⁺ recognition. In the fluorescence bio-imaging aspect, the BFASA could effectively monitor Al³⁺ in living cells.

A novel fluorescence probe for the recognition of Cd2+ and its application

A facile fluorescence probe BQBH was synthesized and investigated on its spectrum property. The result showed that the BQBH had high sensitivity and selectivity for Cd²⁺ with lowest detection determined as 0.14 μM by fluorescence response. The 1: 1 binding ratio between BQBH and Cd²⁺ was determined by Job's plot, and the binding details were further confirmed by ¹H NMR titration, FT-IR spectrum and HRMS analysis. The applications including on test paper, smart phone and cell image were all also investigated.

Study of a Fluorescent System Based on the Naphthalene Derivative Fluorescent Probe Bound to Al3

The naphthalene derivative fluorescent probe F6 was synthesized and a 1 × 10^-3 mol/L solution of Al³⁺ and other metals to be tested was prepared for the subsequent experiments. The Al³⁺ fluorescence system of the naphthalene derivative fluorescent probe F6 was successfully constructed as demonstrated by fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The optimal time, temperature and pH of the reaction were investigated. The selectivity and anti-interference ability of the probe F6 for Al³⁺ were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy in a methanol solution. The experiments showed that the probe has high selectivity and anti-interference ability for Al³⁺. The binding ratio of F6 to Al³⁺ was 2:1, and the binding constant was calculated to be 1.598 × 10⁵ M^-1. The possible mechanism of the binding of the two was speculated. Different concentrations of Al³⁺ were added to Panax Quinquefolium and Paeoniae Radix Alba. The results showed that the recoveries of Al³⁺ were 99.75-100.56% and 98.67-99.67%, respectively. The detection limit was 8.73 × 10^-8 mol/L. The experiments demonstrated that the formed fluorescence system can be successfully adapted for the determination of Al³⁺ content in two Chinese herbal medicines, which has good practical application.
