Endogenous Tissue Engineering for Chondral and Osteochondral Regeneration: Strategies and Mechanisms

Increasing attention has been paid to the development of effective strategies for articular cartilage (AC) and osteochondral (OC) regeneration due to their limited self-reparative capacities and the shortage of timely and appropriate clinical treatments. Traditional cell-dependent tissue engineering faces various challenges such as restricted cell sources, phenotypic alterations, and immune rejection. In contrast, endogenous tissue engineering represents a promising alternative, leveraging acellular biomaterials to guide endogenous cells to the injury site and stimulate their intrinsic regenerative potential. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in endogenous tissue engineering strategies for AC and OC regeneration, with a focus on the tissue engineering triad comprising endogenous stem/progenitor cells (ESPCs), scaffolds, and biomolecules. Multiple types of ESPCs present within the AC and OC microenvironment, including bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs), synovial membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells (SM-MSCs), and AC-derived stem/progenitor cells (CSPCs), exhibit the ability to migrate toward injury sites and demonstrate pro-regenerative properties. The fabrication and characteristics of scaffolds in various formats including hydrogels, porous sponges, electrospun fibers, particles, films, multilayer scaffolds, bioceramics, and bioglass, highlighting their suitability for AC and OC repair, are systemically summarized. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the pivotal role of biomolecules in facilitating ESPCs migration, adhesion, chondrogenesis, osteogenesis, as well as regulating inflammation, aging, and hypertrophy-critical processes for endogenous AC and OC regeneration. Insights into the applications of endogenous tissue engineering strategies for in vivo AC and OC regeneration are provided along with a discussion on future perspectives to enhance regenerative outcomes.

Numerical Investigation on Thermal Conductivity of Graphene Foam Composite for Thermal Management Applications

Graphene foam prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method is a promising thermal interfacial material. However, the thermal properties of graphene foam highly depend on the experimental fabrication conditions during the chemical vapor deposition process. Aiming to reveal how to prepare the appropriate graphene foam for the various thermal management scenarios, the influence of experimental conditions on thermal properties of graphene foam was investigated. Furthermore, the contribution of thermal conductivity and thermal radiation to the effective thermal coefficient of graphene foam was carried out for comparison. The research results showed that the porosity and the cross-section shape of the struts of the growth template were two critical factors affecting the thermal transport of graphene foam, especially with the increase of temperature. In addition, the deposition time of graphene determined the wall thickness and affected the thermal conductivity directly. The thermal radiation contributed more than thermal conductivity when the temperature climbed continuously. Comparatively, the effective thermal coefficient of graphene foam composite with high porosity and circular-shape struts was much superior to that of others at high temperature. The research findings provide important guidance for graphene foam fabrication and its applications in the field of thermal management.

Development of a Simple Electroless Method for Depositing Metallic Pt-Pd Nanoparticles over Wire Gauge Support for Removal of Hydrogen in a Nuclear Reactor

Electroless noble metal deposition on the conducting substrate is widely used to obtain the desired film or coating on the substrate of interest. Wire-gauge-based Pt/Pd/Pt-Pd (individually, sequentially, and simultaneously deposited) catalysts have been developed using formaldehyde and sodium formate as reducing agents. Various surface pretreatment methods like SnCl2 + PdCl2 seeding, oxalic acid etching, and HCl activation (etching) have been employed to obtain the desired noble metal coating. Minimum time duration was observed for simultaneously deposited catalysts using formaldehyde as a reducing agent. Prepared catalysts were characterized for noble metal deposition, coating kinetics, surface morphology, and binding energy. The catalyst was found to be active for H2 and O2 recombination reactions for hydrogen mitigation applications in nuclear reactors.

Three-Dimensional Electrochemical Sensors for Food Safety Applications

Considering the increasing concern for food safety, electrochemical methods for detecting specific ingredients in the food are currently the most efficient method due to their low cost, fast response signal, high sensitivity, and ease of use. The detection efficiency of electrochemical sensors is determined by the electrode materials' electrochemical characteristics. Among them, three-dimensional (3D) electrodes have unique advantages in electronic transfer, adsorption capacity and exposure of active sites for energy storage, novel materials, and electrochemical sensing. Therefore, this review begins by outlining the benefits and drawbacks of 3D electrodes compared to other materials before going into more detail about how 3D materials are synthesized. Next, different types of 3D electrodes are outlined together with common modification techniques for enhancing electrochemical performance. After this, a demonstration of 3D electrochemical sensors for food safety applications, such as detecting components, additives, emerging pollutants, and bacteria in food, was given. Finally, improvement measures and development directions of electrodes with 3D electrochemical sensors are discussed. We think that this review will help with the creation of new 3D electrodes and offer fresh perspectives on how to achieve extremely sensitive electrochemical detection in the area of food safety.

3D graphene: synthesis, properties, and solar cell applications

Three-dimensional (3D) graphene is one of the most important nanomaterials. This feature article highlights the advancements, with an emphasis on contributions from our group, in the synthesis of 3D graphene-based materials and their utilization in solar cells. Chemistries of graphene oxides, hydrocarbons, and alkali metals are discussed for the synthesis of 3D graphene materials. Their performances in dye-sensitized solar cells and perovskite solar cells (as counter electrodes, photoelectrodes, and electron extracting layers) were correlatively analyzed with their properties/structures (accessible surface area, electrical conductivity, defects, and functional groups). The challenges and prospects for their applications in photovoltaic solar cells are outlined.

Magnetic CuFe2O4 Nanoparticles with Pseudocapacitive Properties for Electrical Energy Storage

This investigation is motivated by increasing interest in the development of magnetically ordered pseudocapacitors (MOPC), which exhibit interesting magnetocapacitive effects. Here, advanced pseudocapacitive properties of magnetic CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles in negative potential range are reported, suggesting that CuFe₂O₄ is a promising MOPC and advanced negative electrode material for supercapacitors. A high capacitance of 2.76 F cm^-2 is achieved at a low electrode resistance in a relatively large potential window of 0.8 V. The cyclic voltammograms and galvanostatic charge-discharge data show nearly ideal pseudocapacitive behavior. Good electrochemical performance is achieved at a high active mass loading due to the use of chelating molecules of ammonium salt of purpuric acid (ASPA) as a co-dispersant for CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles and conductive multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) additives. The adsorption of ASPA on different materials is linked to structural features of ASPA, which allows for different interaction and adsorption mechanisms. The combination of advanced magnetic and pseudocapacitive properties in a negative potential range in a single MOPC material provides a platform for various effects related to the influence of pseudocapacitive/magnetic properties on magnetic/pseudocapacitive behavior.
