Abstract
Cancer, becoming increasingly common globally, has a high mortality rate. Despite the much research on diagnosis and treatment methods, the benefits of technological developments, and newly developed sensor devices, cancer is still one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Early detection using powerful and noninvasive tools could be a future focus for prognosis and treatment follow-up. Therefore, electrochemical biosensors can be a strong choice for the detection of cancer biomarkers (such as alpha-fetoprotein, cytochrome c, prostate-specific antigen, myoglobin, carcinoembryonic antigen, alpha-fetoprotein, a cancer antigen, epidermal growth factor receptor, vascular endothelial growth factor, circulating tumor cell, and breast cancer antigen 1/2) due to their advantages such as high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, low cost, short analysis time, and simplicity. Furthermore, electrochemical biosensors are better suited for point-of-care applications due to their mass production and miniaturization ease. This review provides an overview of different electrochemical measurement techniques, bioreceptor surfaces, signal production and amplification, and the integration of electrochemical-modified sensors. Cancer biomarkers based on electrochemical biosensors were given in detail. In addition, studies with MIP-based sensors and immunosensors have been extensively discussed. Integrating electrochemical biosensors with cancer biomarkers was also emphasized as a new research trend. Finally, we provide an overview of current advances in measuring and analyzing cancer biomarkers using electrochemical biosensors and detail current challenges and future perspectives.

Emerging Biosensing Methods to Monitor Lung Cancer Biomarkers in Biological Samples: A Comprehensive Review. Cancers (Basel) 2023; 15:3414. Abstract
Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed of all cancers and one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among men and women worldwide, causing 1.5 million deaths every year. Despite developments in cancer treatment technologies and new pharmaceutical products, high mortality and morbidity remain major challenges for researchers. More than 75% of lung cancer patients are diagnosed in advanced stages, leading to poor prognosis. Lung cancer is a multistep process associated with genetic and epigenetic abnormalities. Rapid, accurate, precise, and reliable detection of lung cancer biomarkers in biological fluids is essential for risk assessment for a given individual and mortality reduction. Traditional diagnostic tools are not sensitive enough to detect and diagnose lung cancer in the early stages. Therefore, the development of novel bioanalytical methods for early-stage screening and diagnosis is extremely important. Recently, biosensors have gained tremendous attention as an alternative to conventional methods because of their robustness, high sensitivity, inexpensiveness, and easy handling and deployment in point-of-care testing. This review provides an overview of the conventional methods currently used for lung cancer screening, classification, diagnosis, and prognosis, providing updates on research and developments in biosensor technology for the detection of lung cancer biomarkers in biological samples. Finally, it comments on recent advances and potential future challenges in the field of biosensors in the context of lung cancer diagnosis and point-of-care applications.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing is an emerging technological innovation for monitoring small substances/molecules in biological or non-biological systems. In particular, there has been a surge of interest in developing PEC devices for determining molecules of clinical significance. This is especially the case for molecules that are markers for serious and deadly medical conditions. The increased interest in PEC sensors to monitor such biomarkers can be attributed to the many apparent advantages of the PEC system, including an enhanced measurable signal, high potential for miniaturization, rapid testing, and low cost, amongst others. The growing number of published research reports on the subject calls for a comprehensive review of the various findings. This article is a review of studies on electrochemical (EC) and PEC sensors for ovarian cancer biomarkers in the last seven years (2016-2022). EC sensors were included because PEC is an improved EC; and a comparison of both systems has, expectedly, been carried out in many studies. Specific attention was given to the different markers of ovarian cancer and the EC/PEC sensing platforms developed for their detection/quantification. Relevant articles were sourced from the following databases: Scopus, PubMed Central, Web of Science, Science Direct, Academic Search Complete, EBSCO, CORE, Directory of open Access Journals (DOAJ), Public Library of Science (PLOS), BioMed Central (BMC), Semantic Scholar, Research Gate, SciELO, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier and SpringerLink.

Disposable label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on prussian blue nanocubes for four breast cancer tumor markers. Talanta 2023; 255:124229. [PMID: 36641867 DOI: 10.1016/j.talanta.2022.124229] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 9.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/27/2022] [Revised: 12/21/2022] [Accepted: 12/26/2022] [Indexed: 12/31/2022]
Abstract
A compact and low-cost multi-electrode array (MEA) is presented, comprising four working electrodes with shared reference and auxiliary electrodes. Prussian blue was electrodeposited on the MEA using chronoamperometry with a positive potential of 0.3 V. Prussian blue nanocubes (PBNCs) were formed, which were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The precision of the four working electrodes was demonstrated using ferric/ferro cyanide (RSD <5.8%). The surface roughness of the working electrodes of the fabricated MEA was investigated by atomic force microscopy and compared with that of a commercial MEA. The PBNCs were the platform for a label-free immunosensor that detected four breast cancer tumor markers (CEA, CA125, CA153, and CA199) using specific antibodies. The processes of antibody immobilization were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The immunosensor was evaluated using real human serum samples, yielding acceptable recoveries (95.1-104.1%, RSD < 3.9) for the four tumor markers. These findings confirmed that our label-free immunosensor based on PBNCs could be a promising device for point-of-care testing and could pave the way for the establishment of new platforms for the screening of various breast cancer tumor markers.
