Pt-Chitosan-TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer Mechanism under Visible Light

Salicylic Acid-Modified Sm-TiO2 for Photoluminescence and Photocatalysis under Real Sunlight: Synergistic Effects between Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer (LMCT) and Sm3+ Dopant

A salicylic-acid (SA)-modified samarium-doped TiO2 complex (Sm-TiO2/SA) was synthesized via a sol-gel method followed by impregnation. A Raman Fourier transform IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study showed that SA (as an electron donor) forms a surface complex on the Sm-TiO2 surface through its phenolic/carboxylic functional groups. In the Sm-TiO2/SA complex, a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) is active, inducing a marked red-shift in the absorption spectrum of TiO2, which extends to 550-600 nm. The synergetic effect between the LMCT process and the luminescent properties of the lanthanide ions (Sm3+) is discussed and supported by the photoluminescence spectra. Further photocatalytic experiments (under sunlight) and the study of the effect of different scavengers show the presence of competitive reactions between de-ethylation and cleavage of Rhodamine B (RhB) during its degradation. With the Sm-TiO2/SA complexes, the superoxide radical ion (O2 •-) is the main active species responsible for the N-de-ethylation pathway under sunlight irradiation. The cleavage of RhB by the hydroxyl radical (•OH) appears, instead, to dominate with the Sm-TiO2 photocatalysts.

Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Dehydrogenation of Alcohols on TiO2 via Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer for Coproduction of H2 and Aldehydes

Developing visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the catalytic dehydrogenation of organics is of great significance for sustainable solar energy utilization. Here, we first report that aromatic alcohols could be efficiently split into H₂ and aldehydes over TiO₂ under visible-light irradiation through a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism. A series of TiO₂ catalysts with different surface contents of the hydroxyl group (-OH) have been synthesized by controlling the hydrothermal and calcination synthesis methods. An optimal H₂ production rate of 18.6 μmol h^-1 is obtained on TiO₂ synthesized from the hydrothermal method with a high content of surface -OH. Experimental characterizations and comparison studies reveal that the surface -OH markedly influences the formation of LMCT complexes and thus changes the visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance. This work is anticipated to inspire further research endeavors in the design and fabrication of visible-light-driven photocatalyst systems based on the LMCT mechanism to realize the simultaneous synthesis of clean fuel and fine chemicals.

Nanoparticles of ZnO-Chitosan (Zn-Chit) composite were prepared using precipitation methods. Several analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmitted electron microscope (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and thermal analysis, were used to characterize the prepared composite. The activity of the modified composite was investigated for nitrite sensing and hydrogen production applications using various electrochemical techniques. A comparative study was performed for pristine ZnO and ZnO loaded on chitosan. The modified Zn-Chit has a linear range of detection 1–150 µM and a limit of detection (LOD) = 0.402 µM (response time ~3 s). The activity of the modified electrode was investigated in a real sample (milk). Furthermore, the anti-interference capability of the surface was utilized in the presence of several inorganic salts and organic additives. Additionally, Zn-Chit composite was employed as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen production in an acidic medium. Thus, the electrode showed long-term stability toward fuel production and enhanced energy security. The electrode reached a current density of 50 mA cm−2 at an overpotential equal to −0.31 and −0.2 V (vs. RHE) for GC/ZnO and GC/Zn-Chit, respectively. Electrode durability was studied for long-time constant potential chronoamperometry for 5 h. The electrodes lost 8% and 9% of the initial current for GC/ZnO and GC/Zn-Chit, respectively.

In Situ Fabrication of N-Doped ZnS/ZnO Composition for Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Activity

For achieving the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, developing hydrogen energy, the green and clean energy, shows a promising perspective for solving the energy and ecological issues. Herein, firstly, we used the hydrothermal method to synthesize the ZnS(en)0.5 as the precursor. Then, ZnS/ZnO composite was obtained by the in situ transformation of ZnS(en)0.5 with heat treatment under air atmosphere. The composition, optical property, morphology, and structural properties of the composite were characterized by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra (Uv-vis Abs), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy image (TEM). Moreover, the content of ZnO in ZnS/ZnO was controlled via adjustment of the calcination times. The visible-light response of ZnS/ZnO originated from the in situ doping of N during the transformation of ZnS(en)0.5 to ZnS/ZnO under heat treatment, which was verified well by XPS. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiments demonstrated that the sample of ZnS/ZnO-0.5 h with 6.9 wt% of ZnO had the best H2 evolution activity (1790 μmol/h/g) under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm), about 7.0 and 12.3 times that of the pure ZnS and ZnO, respectively. The enhanced activities of the ZnS/ZnO composites were ascribed to the intimated hetero-interface between components and efficient transfer of photo-generated electrons from ZnS to ZnO.

Modification of Polymeric Carbon Nitride with Au-CeO2 Hybrids to Improve Photocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution

The construction of a multi-component heterostructure for promoting the exciton splitting and charge separation of conjugated polymer semiconductors has attracted increasing attention in view of improving their photocatalytic activity. Here, we integrated Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated CeO2 (Au-CeO2) with polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) via a modified thermal polymerization method. The combination of the interfacial interaction between PCN and CeO2 via N-O or C-O bonds, with the interior electronic transmission channel built by the decoration of Au NPs at the interface between CeO2 and PCN, endows CeAu-CN with excellent efficiency in the transfer and separation of photo-induced carriers, leading to the enhancement of photochemical activity. The amount-optimized CeAu-CN nanocomposites are capable of producing ca. 80 μmol· H2 per hour under visible light irradiation, which is higher than that of pristine CN, Ce-CN and physical mixed CeAu and PCN systems. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of CeAu-CN remains unchanged for four runs in 4 h. The present work not only provides a sample and feasible strategy to synthesize highly efficient organic polymer composites containing metal-assisted heterojunction photocatalysts, but also opens up a new avenue for the rational design and synthesis of potentially efficient PCN-based materials for efficient hydrogen evolution.
