Abstract
Sesquiterpenoids are integral constituents of terpenoid-bearing plants, comprising a diverse and abundant class of natural compounds, among which eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids have bicyclic structures that feature the fusion of two six-membered carbon rings, thereby attracting considerable attention. They are widespread in nature, with multifaceted biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, antimalarial, and insecticidal activities, thus gaining focus in life science research. The discovery and identification of these active compounds have laid a foundation for unraveling their potential medicinal value. In this review, we comprehensively explore the natural eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids isolated (totaling 391 compounds) between 2016 and 2022, elucidating their chemical structures, plant distribution patterns, and pertinent biological properties. Accordingly, the study serves not only as a framework for researchers to thoroughly comprehend these compounds but also as a robust reference for future endeavors aimed at exploring the pharmaceutical potential and prospective applications of these molecules.

Abstract
Four undescribed guaiane sesquiterpenes, aquisinenoids I-L (2-5) and five known compounds were isolated from the resins of Aquilaria sinensis. Their structures were deduced based on spectroscopic data analysis, X-ray crystallography and ECD calculations. Biologically, compounds 1, 5, 6 and 9 showed anti-renal fibrosis activity, significantly reducing the levels of fibronectin, collagen I, and α-SMA. Compounds 2-4, 7 and 8 could reduce one or two of these proteins at non-toxic concentrations in TGF-β1 induced NRK-52E cells.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization's world report on hearing, nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss by 2050, which may contribute to a severe impact on individual life quality and national economies. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occurs commonly as a result of noise exposure, aging, and ototoxic drugs, and is pathologically characterized by the impairment of mechanosensory hair cells of the inner ear, which is mainly triggered by reactive oxygen species accumulation, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Though recent advances have been made in understanding the ability of cochlear repair and regeneration, there are still no effective therapeutic drugs for SNHL. Chinese herbal medicine which is widely distributed and easily accessible in China has demonstrated a unique curative effect against SNHL with higher safety and lower cost compared with Western medicine. Herein we present trends in research for Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of SNHL, and elucidate their molecular mechanisms of action, to pave the way for further research and development of novel effective drugs in this field.

Abstract
Five new eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids (aquisinenoids F-J (1-5)) and five known compounds (6-10) were isolated from the agarwood of Aquilaria sinensis. Their structures, including absolute configurations, were identified by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses and computational methods. Inspired by our previous study on the same kinds of skeletons, we speculated that the new compounds have anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. The results did not show any activity, but they revealed the structure-activity relationships (SAR).

Imaging changes in the polarity of lipid droplets during NAFLD-Induced ferroptosis via a red-emitting fluorescent probe with a large Stokes shift. Biosens Bioelectron 2023; 231:115289. [PMID: 37031507 DOI: 10.1016/j.bios.2023.115289] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/03/2023] [Revised: 03/22/2023] [Accepted: 03/30/2023] [Indexed: 04/11/2023]
Abstract
Cell death resulting from ferroptosis is a consequence of the accumulation of lipid peroxides that are produced when lipids and reactive oxygen species (ROS) interact. This process is dependent on iron and alters the structure and polarity of lipid droplets (LDs). Unlike reactive fluorescent probes, environment-sensitive fluorescent probes can accurately monitor metabolic activities by sensing the intracellular environment of living organisms. To this end, we developed a polarity-sensitive fluorescent probe LIP-Ser that anchors to LDs and can be used to monitor changes in the polarity of LDs during ferroptosis by in situ imaging. LIP-Ser has a red-emitting (λem = 634 nm) and a large Stokes shift (Δλ = 161 nm in 1,4-dioxane), which avoids it from autofluorescence interference and crosstalk between excitation and emission spectra, thereby preventing low signal-to-noise ratio and severe fluorescence self-quenching during imaging. Additionally, LIP-Ser is used in this study to demonstrate that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) promotes ferroptosis at the cellular and in vivo levels, and that inhibition of cellular ferroptosis effectively reduces the damage caused by NAFLD to cells and mouse liver tissue.
