In Situ Construction of Ag/TiO2/g-C3N4 Heterojunction Nanocomposite Based on Hierarchical Co-Assembly with Sustainable Hydrogen Evolution

Computational assessment of the potential of cross-catalytic coprecipitating systems for the bottom-up design of nanocomposites

The production of nanocomposites is often economically and environmentally costly. Silica-witherite biomorphs, known for producing a wealth of life-like shapes, are nanocomposites entirely formed through self-organization processes. Behind these precipitates are two precipitation reactions that catalyze each other. Using a simple computational approach, we show here that this type of chemical system - defined here as Cross-Catalytic Coprecipitating Systems (CCCSs) - is of great interest to material design. Provided that cross-catalytic effects are sufficient to overcome the precipitation thresholds for each phase, all CCCSs can be expected to self-organize into nanocomposite materials through a one-pot, one-step synthesis protocol. Symmetry-breaking events generating various complex, ordered textures are predicted in CCCSs involving crystalline phases. While high levels of stochasticity lead to a loss of ordering, coprecipitation is found to be robust to diffusion or advection in the solution. This model shows that a couple of chemical reactions can generate a range of complex textures - with possibly distinct physical/chemical properties. Cross-catalytic coprecipitating systems consequently represent a promising avenue for producing nanocomposites with complex textures at reduced economic and environmental costs.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Heterostructured g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 Nanocomposites for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

In this study, heterostructured g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 nanocomposites were successfully fabricated using an easily accessible hydrothermal route. Various analytical tools were employed to investigate the surface morphology, crystal structure, specific surface area, and optical properties of as-synthesized samples. XRD and TEM characterization results provided evidence of the successful fabrication of the ternary g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 heterostructured nanocomposite. The heterostructured g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite exhibited the best degradation efficiency of 98.04% against rhodamine B (RhB) within 180 min under visible LED light irradiation. The g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite exhibited an apparent reaction rate constant 13.16, 4.7, and 1.33 times higher than that of TiO2, Ag-TiO2, and g-C3N4, respectively. The g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 ternary composite demonstrated higher photocatalytic activity than pristine TiO2 and binary Ag-TiO2 photocatalysts for the degradation of RhB under visible LED light irradiation. The improved photocatalytic performance of the g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite can be attributed to the formation of an excellent heterostructure between TiO2 and g-C3N4 as well as the incorporation of Ag nanoparticles, which promoted efficient charge carrier separation and transfer and suppressed the rate of recombination. Therefore, this study presents the development of heterostructured g-C3N4/Ag-TiO2 nanocomposites that exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance for the efficient degradation of harmful organic pollutants in wastewater, making them promising candidates for environmental remediation.

Facile Fabrication of TiO2 Quantum Dots-Anchored g-C3N4 Nanosheets as 0D/2D Heterojunction Nanocomposite for Accelerating Solar-Driven Photocatalysis

TiO₂ semiconductors exhibit a low catalytic activity level under visible light because of their large band gap and fast recombination of electron-hole pairs. This paper reports the simple fabrication of a 0D/2D heterojunction photocatalyst by anchoring TiO₂ quantum dots (QDs) on graphite-like C₃N₄ (g-C₃N₄) nanosheets (NSs); the photocatalyst is denoted as TiO₂ QDs@g-C₃N₄. The nanocomposite was characterized via analytical instruments, such as powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, t orange (MO) under solar light were compared. The TiO₂ QDs@g-C₃N₄ photocatalyst exhibited 95.57% MO degradation efficiency and ~3.3-fold and 5.7-fold higher activity level than those of TiO₂ QDs and g-C₃N₄ NSs, respectively. Zero-dimensional/two-dimensional heterojunction formation with a staggered electronic structure leads to the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers via a Z-scheme pathway, which significantly accelerates photocatalysis under solar light. This study provides a facile synthetic method for the rational design of 0D/2D heterojunction nanocomposites with enhanced solar-driven catalytic activity.

B-Doped g-C3N4/Black TiO2 Z-Scheme Nanocomposites for Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Performance

Black TiO₂ with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs)/B-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposites are successfully prepared by the one-pot strategy. The OVs can improve not only photogenerated carrier separation, but also the sorption and activation of antibiotic compounds (tetracycline hydrochloride, TC). The prepared heterojunction photocatalysts with a narrow bandgap of ∼2.13 eV exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (65%) under visible light irradiation within 30 min, which is several times higher than that of the pristine one. The outstanding photocatalytic property can be ascribed to abundant OVs and B element-dope reducing the bandgap and extending the photo-response to the visible light region, the Z-scheme formation of heterojunctions preventing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and promoting their effective separation.

Emerging and Promising Multifunctional Nanomaterial for Textile Application Based on Graphitic Carbon Nitride Heterostructure Nanocomposites

Nanocomposites constructed with heterostructures of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), silver (Ag), and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) have emerged as promising nanomaterials for various environmental, energy, and clinical applications. In the field of textiles, Ag and TiO₂ are already recognized as essential nanomaterials for the chemical surface and bulk modification of various textile materials, but the application of composites with g-C₃N₄ as a green and visible-light-active photocatalyst has not yet been fully established. This review provides an overview of the construction of Ag/g-C₃N₄, TiO₂/g-C₃N₄, and Ag/TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ heterostructures; the mechanisms of their photocatalytic activity; and the application of photocatalytic textile platforms in the photochemical activation of organic synthesis, energy generation, and the removal of various organic pollutants from water. Future prospects for the functionalization of textiles using g-C₃N₄-containing heterostructures with Ag and TiO₂ are highlighted.

Synthesis of CuO x /TiO2 Photocatalysts with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

CuO _x /TiO₂ co-photocatalysts with various Cu loading contents were synthesized by an impregnation method, and their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by photodegradation of organic pollutants under visible light illumination. The as-prepared CuO _x /TiO₂ composites exhibited a unique structure, in which CuO _x clusters with about 2-3 nm nanocrystals were uniformly distributed on the TiO₂ cube. The mesoporous Ti³⁺/TiO₂ substrate with a uniform pore structure greatly improved the uniformity of the loaded Cu, wherein Ti³⁺ acted as a reducing agent for reducing Cu²⁺ to Cu⁺ and Cu⁰. The reversible process of the Cu species between Cu⁺ and Cu⁰ markedly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the CuO _x /TiO₂ co-photocatalyst, by promoting the transfer of photogenerated electrons and suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. The synergistic effect between CuO _x and TiO₂ also played an important role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the CuO _x /TiO₂ co-photocatalyst. The results indicated that CuO _x /TiO₂-1 had the highest photocatalytic efficiency, which was 1.5 times higher than that of the commercial nano-TiO₂ P25 under visible light, and demonstrated a good stability even after five recycles. This structural design and the valence control strategy for the Cu atom provide an idea that facilitates the utilization of visible light and the improvement of the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂, promoting the practical application of the TiO₂ photocatalyst.

Adsorption coupling photocatalytic removal of gaseous n-hexane by phosphorus-doped g-C3N4/TiO2/Zn(OAc)2-ACF composites

VOCs emission reduction in the petroleum and petrochemical industry is a hot and difficult topic at present. The single method may not be able to meet the actual treatment status. Therefore, the adsorption coupled photocatalytic degradation technology was used to remove VOCs. Phosphorus-doped carbon nitride (PCN) and PCN/TiO₂ were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel method, and then PCN/TiO₂/Zn(OAc)₂-ACF composites were prepared by ultrasonic impregnation on zinc acetate modified activated carbon fibers (Zn(OAc)₂-ACF). The removal efficiency of n-hexane by composite materials was explored in a self-made reactor, and the factors affecting removal efficiency, removal mechanism, and possible ways of degradation were investigated. The results showed that under the optimum reaction conditions (initial concentration of n-hexane 200 mg/m³, space velocity 1000 h^-1, light intensity 24 W, mass fraction of doped PCN 6%, loading twice, calcination temperature 450 °C), PCN/TiO₂/Zn(OAc)₂-ACF composite has the highest removal efficiency of n-hexane (90.2%). The adsorption capacity of the composites after doping the P element was 215.3 mg/g, which did not enhance the adsorption performance compared with that before doping, but the removal rate of n-hexane was higher. This showed that doping P element was helpful to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the composites.

Anion-Cation Co-Doped g-C3N4 Porous Nanotubes with Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Performance

Graphitic C₃N₄-based materials are promising for photocatalytic H₂ evolution applications, but they still suffer from low photocatalytic activity due to the insufficient light absorption, unfavorable structure and fast recombination of photogenerated charge. Herein, a novel anion-cation co-doped g-C₃N₄ porous nanotube is successfully synthesized using a self-assembly impregnation-assisted polymerization method. Ni ions on the surface of the self-assembly nanorod precursor can not only cooperate with H₃P gas from the thermal cracking of NaH₂PO₂ as an anion-cation co-doping source, but, more importantly, suppress the shape-collapsing effect of the etching of H₃P gas due to the strong coordinate bonding of Ni-P, which leads to a Ni and P co-doped g-C₃N₄ porous nanotube (PNCNT). Ni and P co-doping can build a new intermediate state near the conduction band in the bandgap of the PNCNT, and the porous nanotube structure gives it a higher BET surface area and light reflection path, showing a synergistic ability to broaden the visible-light absorption, facilitate photogenerated charge separation and the light-electron excitation rate of g-C₃N₄ and provide more reaction sites for photocatalytic H₂ evolution reaction. Therefore, as expected, the PNCNT exhibits an excellent photocatalytic H₂ evolution rate of 240.91 μmol·g^-1·h^-1, which is 30.5, 3.8 and 27.8 times as that of the pure g-C₃N₄ nanotube (CNT), single Ni-doped g-C₃N₄ nanotube (NCNT) and single P-doped g-C₃N₄ nanotube (PCNT), respectively. Moreover, the PNCNT shows good stability and long-term photocatalytic H₂ production activity, which makes it a promising candidate for practical applications.

Preparation of g-C3N4/TNTs/CNTs Photocatalytic Composite Powder and Its Enhancement of Antifouling Performance of Polydimethylsiloxane Coatings

Semiconductor photocatalytic materials have shown potential in the field of antifouling due to their good antibacterial properties, stability, and nontoxic properties. It is an effective way to use them to improve the static antifouling performance of silicone antifouling coatings. g-C₃N₄/TNTs/CNTs (CNTC) photocatalytic composite powders were prepared and introduced into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings to enhance their antifouling performance. Firstly, g-C₃N₄/TNTs with heterostructure were thermally polymerized by urea and TiO₂ nanotubes (TNTs), and then g-C₃N₄/TNTs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were composited to obtain CNTC. Finally, CNTC was added into PDMS to prepare g-C₃N₄/TNTs/CNTs/PDMS (CNTC/P) composite antifouling coating. The results showed that CNTC successfully recombined and formed a heterostructure, and the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers decreased after recombination. The addition of CNTC to PDMS increased the hydrophobicity and roughness while reducing the surface energy (SE) of the coatings. CNTC could effectively improve the anti-attachment performance of PDMS coatings to bacteria and benthic diatom. The bacterial attachment rate (A_B) and benthic diatom attachment rate (A_D) of CNTC/P-20 were, respectively, 13.1% and 63.1%; they are much lower than that of the coating without photocatalytic composite powder. This coating design provides a new idea for developing new “efficient” and “green” photocatalytic composite antifouling coatings.

Anti-Cancer Activity of Water Soluble Reduced Graphene Oxide-Aryl Aziridino-Manganese (II) Complex

The Graphene-based functional structures with large surface areas, ease of functionalization/modification, and photothermal features are currently very attractive for cancer nanotherapy applications. The reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) structures having moderate cytotoxicity have been used against human cancerous cells. We developed a water soluble rGO by heating with an aryl azide (a “green” reagent) followed by mild oxidation with aqueous alkaline KMnO4 yielding the c0lorless, water soluble rGO-arylaziridino-Mn (II) complex. The anti-cancer property of the compound was tested in human monocytic U937 cell line, CT26 murine colon carcinoma cell line and 4T1 murine breast cancer cell lines. rGOarylaziridino-Mn (II) complex significantly induced apoptosis in the above cells in a concentration dependent manner in vitro, similar to an effect of known anti-cancer drug Doxorubicin.

A Comprehensive Review of Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)-Metal Oxide-Based Nanocomposites: Potential for Photocatalysis and Sensing

g-C3N4 has drawn lots of attention due to its photocatalytic activity, low-cost and facile synthesis, and interesting layered structure. However, to improve some of the properties of g-C3N4, such as photochemical stability, electrical band structure, and to decrease charge recombination rate, and towards effective light-harvesting, g-C3N4-metal oxide-based heterojunctions have been introduced. In this review, we initially discussed the preparation, modification, and physical properties of the g-C3N4 and then, we discussed the combination of g-C3N4 with various metal oxides such as TiO2, ZnO, FeO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, WO3, SnO, SnO2, etc. We summarized some of their characteristic properties of these heterojunctions, their optical features, photocatalytic performance, and electrical band edge positions. This review covers recent advances, including applications in water splitting, CO2 reduction, and photodegradation of organic pollutants, sensors, bacterial disinfection, and supercapacitors. We show that metal oxides can improve the efficiency of the bare g-C3N4 to make the composites suitable for a wide range of applications. Finally, this review provides some perspectives, limitations, and challenges in investigation of g-C3N4-metal-oxide-based heterojunctions.

Construction of Chemically Bonded Interface of Organic/Inorganic g-C3N4/LDH Heterojunction for Z-Schematic Photocatalytic H2 Generation

The design and synthesis of a Z-schematic photocatalytic heterostructure with an intimate interface is of great significance for the migration and separation of photogenerated charge carriers, but still remains a challenge. Here, we developed an efficient Z-scheme organic/inorganic g-C3N4/LDH heterojunction by in situ growing of inorganic CoAl-LDH firmly on organic g-C3N4 nanosheet (NS). Benefiting from the two-dimensional (2D) morphology and the surface exposed pyridine-like nitrogen atoms, the g-C3N4 NS offers efficient trap sits to capture transition metal ions. As such, CoAl-LDH NS can be tightly attached onto the g-C3N4 NS, forming a strong interaction between CoAl-LDH and g-C3N4 via nitrogen-metal bonds. Moreover, the 2D/2D interface provides a high-speed channel for the interfacial charge transfer. As a result, the prepared heterojunction composite exhibits a greatly improved photocatalytic H2 evolution activity, as well as considerable stability. Under visible light irradiation of 4 h, the optimal H2 evolution rate reaches 1952.9 μmol g-1, which is 8.4 times of the bare g-C3N4 NS. The in situ construction of organic/inorganic heterojunction with a chemical-bonded interface may provide guidance for the designing of high-performance heterostructure photocatalysts.

Nanoarchitectonics for Hierarchical Fullerene Nanomaterials

Nanoarchitectonics is a universal concept to fabricate functional materials from nanoscale building units. Based on this concept, fabrications of functional materials with hierarchical structural motifs from simple nano units of fullerenes (C60 and C70 molecules) are described in this review article. Because fullerenes can be regarded as simple and fundamental building blocks with mono-elemental and zero-dimensional natures, these demonstrations for hierarchical functional structures impress the high capability of the nanoarchitectonics approaches. In fact, various hierarchical structures such as cubes with nanorods, hole-in-cube assemblies, face-selectively etched assemblies, and microstructures with mesoporous frameworks are fabricated by easy fabrication protocols. The fabricated fullerene assemblies have been used for various applications including volatile organic compound sensing, microparticle catching, supercapacitors, and photoluminescence systems.

Recent advances in graphite carbon nitride-based nanocomposites: structure, antibacterial properties and synergies

Bacterial infections and transmission threaten human health and well-being. Graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), a promising photocatalytic antibacterial nanomaterial, has attracted increasing attention to combat bacterial transmission, due to the outstanding stability, high efficiency and environmental sustainability of this material. However, the antibacterial efficiency of g-C₃N₄ is affected by several factors, including its specific surface area, rapid electron/hole recombination processes and optical absorption properties. To improve the efficiency of the antibacterial properties of g-C₃N₄ and extend its range of applications, various nanocomposites have been prepared and evaluated. In this review, the advances in amplifying the photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency of g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites is discussed, including different topologies, noble metal decoration, non-noble metal doping and heterojunction construction. The enhancement mechanisms and synergistic effects in g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites are highlighted. The remaining challenges and future perspectives of antibacterial g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites are also discussed.

Fabrication of hollow flower-like magnetic Fe3O4/C/MnO2/C3N4 composite with enhanced photocatalytic activity

The serious problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage have pushed the green economy photocatalysis technology to the forefront of research. Therefore, the development of an efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalyst has become a hotpot. In this work, magnetic Fe₃O₄/C/MnO₂/C₃N₄ composite as photocatalyst was synthesized by combining in situ coating with low-temperature reassembling of CN precursors. Morphology and structure characterization showed that the composite photocatalyst has a hollow core–shell flower-like structure. In the composite, the magnetic Fe₃O₄ core was convenient for magnetic separation and recovery. The introduction of conductive C layer could avoid recombining photo-generated electrons and holes effectively. Ultra-thin g-C₃N₄ layer could fully contact with coupled semiconductor. A Z-type heterojunction between g-C₃N₄ and flower-like MnO₂ was constructed to improve photocatalytic performance. Under the simulated visible light, 15 wt% photocatalyst exhibited 94.11% degradation efficiency in 140 min for degrading methyl orange and good recyclability in the cycle experiment.

Photocatalytic Activity of Silver-Based Biomimetics Composites

Different Ag@TiO2 and Ag@ZnO catalysts, with nanowire (NW) structure, were synthesized containing different amounts of silver loading (1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%) and characterized by FE-SEM, HRTEM, BET, XRD, Raman, XPS, and UV-vis. The photocatalytic activity of the composites was studied by the production of hydrogen via water splitting under UV-vis light and the degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. The maximum hydrogen production of all the silver-based catalysts was obtained with a silver loading of 10 wt.% under irradiation at 500 nm. Moreover, 10%Ag@TiO2 NWs was the catalyst with the highest activity in the hydrogen production reaction (1119 µmol/hg), being 18 times greater than the amount obtained with the pristine TiO2 NW catalyst. The most dramatic difference in hydrogen production was obtained with 10%Ag@TiO2-P25, 635 µmol/hg, being 36 times greater than the amount reported for the unmodified TiO2-P25 (18 µmol/hg). The enhancement of the catalytic activity is attributed to a synergism between the silver nanoparticles incorporated and the high surface area of the composites. In the case of the degradation of ciprofloxacin, all the silver-based catalysts degraded more than 70% of the antibiotic in 60 min. The catalyst that exhibited the best result was 3%Ag@ZnO commercial, with 99.72% of degradation. The control experiments and stability tests showed that photocatalysis was the route of degradation and the selected silver-based catalysts were stable after seven cycles, with less than 1% loss of efficiency per cycle. These results suggest that the catalysts could be employed in additional cycles without the need to be resynthesized, thus reducing remediation costs.

Nanoscale Multidimensional Pd/TiO2/g-C3N4 Catalyst for Efficient Solar-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Solar-to-fuel conversion is an innovative concept for green energy, attracting many researchers to explore them. Solar-driven photocatalysts have become an essential solution to provide valuable chemicals like hydrogen, hydrocarbon, and ammonia. For sustainable stability under solar irradiation, titanium dioxide is regarded as an acceptable candidate, further showing excellent photocatalytic activity. Incorporating the photo-sensitizers, including noble metal nanoparticles and polymeric carbon-based material, can improve its photoresponse and facilitate the electron transfer and collection. In this study, we synthesized the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheet incorporated with high crystalline TiO2 nanofibers (NF) as 1D/2D heterostructure catalyst for photocatalytic water splitting. The microstructure, optical absorption, crystal structure, charge carrier dynamics, and specific surface area were characterized systematically. The low bandgap of 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets (NS) as a sensitizer improves the specific surface area and photo-response in the visible region as the incorporated amount increases. Because of the band structure difference between TiO2 and g-C3N4, constructing the heterojunction formation, the superior separation of electron-hole is observed. The detection of reactive oxygen species and photo-assisted Kelvin probe microscopy are conducted to investigates the possible charge migration. The highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of Pd/TiO2/g-C3N4 achieves 11.62 mmol·h−1·g−1 under xenon lamp irradiation.

Facile Fabrication of SrTiO3@MoS2 Composite Nanofibers for Excellent Photodetector Application

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as a kind of transition metal dichalcogenide, has been widely studied for its excellent compatibility with most of inorganic nanomaterials. Nevertheless, its microscale and agglomeration limit the performance severely. Therefore, the special structure of V-MoS2 has drawn a lot of interest, which can not only reduce the size of MoS2 nanosheets but also improve the valence electron structure of the materials. In this work, SrTiO3@MoS2 composite nanofibers were synthesized by the simple electrospinning and hydrothermal method, and it was applied as a novel material for photodetector. SEM, TEM, EDX, XRD, I-T curves, and EIS analysis were used to study the structure and properties of the prepared SrTiO3@MoS2 composite nanofibers. Simulating under sunlight at a potential of 1.23 V, the prepared composite materials exhibited a superior photoelectric performance of photocurrent density of 21.4 μA and a resistance of 2.3 Ω. These results indicate that the composite of SrTiO3 nanofiber adhered with V-MoS2 has a stable composite structure, good electrical conductivity, and photoelectric sensitivity and is a suitable material for photodetectors. This work provides new ideas for the preparation of self-assembled materials and their application in photodetectors.

Preparation and High Photocurrent Generation Enhancement of Self-Assembled Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Composite Dye Films

Understanding photocurrent conversion of layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials will be a key step in the future application of these materials to light-capturing molecular devices. In the present study, ultrathin nickel-iron layered double hydroxide/dye (NF-LDH/dye) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) semiconductor films were prepared using an LB device and deposited on an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate as a photoanode. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the prepared LB semiconductor film materials was tested. A comparative experiment was performed to effectively explore the photoelectric conversion performances of the LB semiconductor film materials. Specifically, the NF-LDH cast film electrode, the dye cast film electrode, and an ultrathin composite LB film electrode were used as typical samples to explore photoelectric conversion performances. The electrochemical workstation was used to study the photocurrent density, linear scanning voltammetry curve, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of LB film electrodes with different layers. The results show that the film electrode cast by LDH alone or dye alone produces weak photocurrent. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the LB film electrode is enhanced due to the different dyes' molecular structures and/or aggregations on the surface of LDH with various morphological patterns. The combined NF-LDH/dye composite LB film photoelectrode can generate a photocurrent that is 2-5 times stronger than the raw material, and the stable use efficiency is more than 92%. Present obtained composite LB films demonstrated a uniform morphology and good photoelectric conversion ability. This work provides a useful reference for the field of LDH semiconductor optoelectronic devices and solar cells.

Synergism of Multicomponent Catalysis: One-Dimensional Pt-Rh-Pd Nanochain Catalysts for Efficient Methanol Oxidation

Designing Pt-based alloy catalysts with multicomponent composition and a controllable structure is important to improve the utilization efficiency of precious metals and catalytic activity, but it still face a lot of challenges for simple preparation. Herein, we used insulin amyloid fibrils as templates and their own one-dimensional spiral structure to synthesize Pt-Rh-Pd ternary alloy nanochains under mild conditions. The prepared Pt-Rh-Pd alloy nanochains (NCs) have uniform diameter, and the particle size is only 2 nm. This ultrafine structure increases the specific surface area of the catalyst to a certain extent, and the synergistic effect of the three metals improves the catalytic performance. Compared with commercial Pt/C and binary Pt-Rh NCs, the as-presented Pt-Rh-Pd NCs show better methanol oxidation activity ability and stability against CO poisoning. The peak current density of front sweep is 1.48 mA cm-2, which is 1.7 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.89 mA cm-2) and 1.4 times higher than that of the Pt-Rh NCs (1.07 mA cm-2), indicating great application potential as high-performance electrocatalysts in fuel cells.

Fabrication of hierarchical SrTiO3@MoS2 heterostructure nanofibers as efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen-evolution reactions

The construction of low-cost, high-performance electrocatalysts instead of platinum catalysts is critical to solving the energy crisis. Here, using simple electrospinning and hydrothermal methods, new MoS₂ nanosheets on SrTiO₃ nanofibers (NFs) and 2D SrTiO₃@MoS₂ heterostructure NFs are synthesized. In addition, SrTiO₃@MoS₂ heterostructure NFs are compared with bare SrTiO₃ NFs and MoS₂ nanosheets. Importantly, the prepared SrTiO₃@MoS₂ heterostructure shows better hydrogen-evolution reaction performance than other MoS₂-based electrocatalysts with an overpotential of 165 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, a Tafel slope of 81.41 mV dec^-1, and long-term electrochemical durability of 3000 cycles. Therefore, the present work strongly demonstrates the positive synergy between SrTiO₃ NFs and layered MoS₂, and also provides a strategy for preparing low-cost and high-activity water-decomposition electrocatalysts.

An Integrating Platform of Ratiometric Fluorescent Adsorbent for Unconventional Real-Time Removing and Monitoring of Copper Ions

Nondegradable heavy metals have caused great dangers to the environment and human health. Combining stimuli-responsive materials with conventional MOF-based adsorbents has been considered an effective method to generate intelligent adsorbents for superior control over the adsorption process. Herein, a smart MOF-based ratiometric fluorescent adsorbent was designed to accurately monitor the progression of the removal of copper ions with dual-emitting fluorescence signal. Unlike the traditional difunctional materials, this delicately designed platform overcomes the huge energy gap to achieve two functions simultaneously. This unconventional platform provides a reliable fluorescent response toward Cu²⁺ during the removing process, changing linearly related to the degree of the adsorption process, which holds extreme promise in effectively monitoring the adsorption process. The underlying relationship of the adsorption and fluorescence response process toward copper was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In particular, because of the favorable ion binding affinity of ZIF-8 and self-calibrating effect of RhB, the as-prepared smart adsorbent demonstrates a superior adsorption performance of 608 mg g^-1, broad response range (0.05-200 ppm, 2.07 × 10^-7to 8.29 × 10^-4 M), ultrahigh sensitivity (0.04 ppm, 1.91 × 10^-7 M) toward Cu²⁺ and strong anti-interference ability. This smart adsorbent opens an intelligent pathway to promote substantial advancements in the fields of environmental monitoring and industrial waste management.

Fabrication of Hydrogels via Host-Guest Polymers as Highly Efficient Organic Dye Adsorbents for Wastewater Treatment

New self-assembled hydrogel materials of poly(vinyl alcohol)/cyclodextrin-modified poly(acrylic acid)/azobenzene-modified poly(acrylic acid) (PVA/PAA-CD/PAA-Azo) were successfully prepared via host-guest interactions and hydrogen bonds. The as-prepared hydrogel materials were characterized by various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and specific surface area tests. The prepared hydrogels with different concentrations of PVA exhibited different network structures. In addition, ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation and temperature change induce a gel-sol phase transition in the hydrogel materials. The obtained hydrogel materials could be used as good adsorbents for two model organic dye molecules, which was mainly due to electrostatic interactions between methylene blue/rhodamine B (MB/RhB) and the gels in the adsorption process. In particular, the adsorption processes of the as-prepared hydrogel materials conformed to the pseudo-first-order model with a high correlation coefficient, which indicates that gel has a potential application in the field of wastewater purification.

Facile Synthesis of Self-Assembled NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Azobenzene Composite Films with Photoisomerization and Chemical Gas Sensor Performances

Two kinds of layered double hydroxide (LDH) Langmuir composite films containing azobenzene (Azo) groups were successfully prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technology. Then, an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and an atomic force microscope (AFM) were used to investigate the structures of NiFe-LDH and the uniform morphologies of the composite LB films. The photoisomerization and acid-base gas sensor performances of the obtained thin film samples were tested by infrared visible (FTIR) spectroscropy and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) spectroscropy. It is proved that the Azo dye molecules in the composite film are relatively stable to photoisomerization. In addition, the prepared composite films have high sensing sensitivity and good recyclability for acid-base response gases. The present research proposes a new clue for designing thin film materials for chemical gas response with good stability and sensitivity.

Facile Synthesis of Ag/Pd NanoparticleLoaded Poly(ethylene imine) Composite Hydrogels with Highly Efficient Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) has abundant amino groups in a macromolecular chain and can be used as a graft source for metal nanocomposites, which shows excellent ability to form stable complexes with heavy metal ions. In this work, a simple and convenient method was used to make PEI into a stable hydrogel with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide-N-hydroxysuccinimide and subsequently coprecipitate with silver nitrate solution or palladium chloride solution to form metal-loaded composite hydrogels. In addition, the characterizations of composite hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, specific surface area tests (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectroscopy. The properties of composite hydrogels on the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol were studied. The results showed that the composite hydrogels could be easily separated from the water environment, which indicated the large-scale potential application in organic catalytic degradation and wastewater treatment.

Self-assembled functional components-doped conductive polypyrrole composite hydrogels with enhanced electrochemical performances

A conductive hydrogel is a composite conductive material formed by combining a conductive polymer with a nanogel structure of a hydrogel. Conductive hydrogels not only have potential applications in supercapacitors, sensors, and modulators, they can also be synthesized by many methods, such as copolymerization, crosslinking, and grafting. In this work, we successfully prepared three conductive composite hydrogels by in situ polymerization, namely polypyrrole sodium alginate conductive hydrogel, ferric chloride-doped polypyrrole sodium alginate hydrogel and doped polypyrrole sodium alginate hydrogel with sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate. In addition, a series of characterizations were performed for the three conductive hydrogels described above. The results show that the polypyrrole sodium alginate hydrogel doped with ferric chloride forms a nanofiber network with a more stable structure and better electrochemical performance.

Fabrication of CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels for highly efficient catalytic reduction of organic pollutants

In this study, natural polymer material chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) with large specific surface area were used to prepare a new CS/RGO-based composite hydrogel by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as cross-linking agent. In addition, a CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was prepared by loading palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The morphologies and microstructures of the prepared hydrogels were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, TG, and BET. The catalytic performance of the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was analyzed, and the experimental results showed that the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel had good catalytic performance for degradation of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) and o-nitroaniline (2-NA). Therefore, this study has potential application prospect in wastewater treatment and provides new information for composite hydrogel design.
