Microwave Synthesis of Gold Nanoclusters with Garlic Extract Modifications for the Simple and Sensitive Detection of Lead Ions

Gold nanoclusters-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer for rapid and sensitive detection of Pb2

Lead pollution has remained a significant global concern for several decades due to its detrimental effects on the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system across all age groups. Addressing the demand for detecting trace amounts of lead in food samples, we have developed a novel biosensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from fluorescein R6G to gold nanoclusters (AuNCs-CCY). By utilizing polypeptides as a template, we successfully synthesized AuNCs-CCY with an excitation spectrum that overlaps with the emission spectrum of R6G. Exploiting the fact that Pb2+ induces the aggregation of gold nanoclusters, leading to the separation of R6G from AuNCs-CCY and subsequent fluorescence recovery, we achieved the quantitative detection of Pb2+. Within the concentration range of 0.002-0.20 μM, a linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence enhancement value (F-F0) and Pb2+ concentration, characterized by the linear equation y = 2398.69x + 87.87 (R2 = 0.996). The limit of detection (LOD) for Pb2+ was determined to be 0.00079 μM (3σ/K). The recovery rate ranged from 96 % to 104 %, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) below 10 %. These findings demonstrate the potential application value of our biosensor, which offers a promising approach to address the urgent need for sensitive detection of heavy metal ions, specifically Pb2+, in food samples.

Sensing lead ions in water: a comprehensive review on strategies and sensor materials

It is well-known fact that elevated lead ions (Pb2+), the third most toxic among heavy metal ions in aqueous systems, pose a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems when they exceed permissible limits. Pb2+ is commonly found in industrial waste and fertilizers, contaminating water sources and subsequently entering the human body, causing various adverse health conditions. Unlike being expelled, Pb2+ accumulates within the body, posing potential health risks. The harmful impact of presence of Pb2+ in water have prompted researchers to diligently work toward maintaining water quality. Recognizing the importance of Pb2+, this review article makes a sincere and effective effort to address the issues associated with Pb2+. This overview article gives insights into various sensing approaches to detect Pb2+ in water using different sensing materials, including 2-dimensional materials, thiols, quantum dots, and polymers. Herein, different sensing approaches such as electrochemical, optical, field effect transistor-based, micro-electromechanical system-based, and chemi resistive are thoroughly explained. Field effect transistor-based and chemiresistive work on similar principles and are compared on the basis of their fabrication processes and sensing capabilities. In conclusion, future directions for chemiresistive sensors in Pb2+ detection are proposed, emphasizing their simplicity, portability, straightforward functionality, and ease of fabrication. Notably, it sheds light on various thiol and ligand compounds and coupling strategies utilized in Pb2+ detection. This comprehensive study is expected to benefit individuals engaged in Pb2+ detection.

Ligand-protected nanoclusters and their role in agriculture, sensing and allied applications

Nano biotechnology, when coupled with green chemistry, can revolutionize human life because of the vast opportunities and benefits it can offer to the quality of human life. Luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs) have recently developed as a potential research area with applications in different areas like medical, imaging, sensing etc. Recently these new candidates have proved to be beneficial in the food supply chain enabling controlled release of nutrients, pesticides and as nanosensors for the detection of contaminants and play roles in healthy food storage and maintaining food quality. An assortment of nanomaterials has been employed for these applications and reviews have been published on the use of nanotechnology in agriculture. Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters are a distinctive class of small organic-inorganic nanostructures that garnered immense research interest in recent years owing to their stability at specific "magic size" compositions along with tunable properties that make them promising candidates for a wide range of nanotechnology-based applications. This review tries to consolidate the recent developments in the area of ligand-protected nanoclusters in connection with the detection of pesticides, food contaminants, heavy metal ions and plant growth monitoring for healthy agricultural practices. Its antimicrobial activity to manage the microbial contamination is highlighted. The review also throws light on the various perspectives by which food production and allied areas will be transformed in future.

Effective reduction of nitrophenols and colorimetric detection of Pb(ii) ions by Siraitia grosvenorii fruit extract capped gold nanoparticles

This study presents a simple and green approach for the synthesis of Siraitia grosvenorii fruit extract capped gold nanoparticles (SG-AuNPs). The SG-AuNPs samples prepared under the optimized conditions were characterized by various techniques (UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR, HR-TEM, EDX, DLS). The biosynthesized nanoparticles were then studied for the reduction of 2-nitrophenol (2-NP) and 3-nitrophenols (3-NP) and for colorimetric detection of Pb2+ ions. The characterization results revealed that the crystals of SG-AuNPs were spherical with an average size of 7.5 nm. The FTIR and DLS analyses proved the presence of the biomolecule layer around AuNPs, which played an important role in stabilizing the nanoparticles. The SG-AuNPs showed excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 3-NP and 2-NP, achieving complete conversion within 14 min. The catalytic process was endothermic and followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The activation energy was determined to be 10.64 and 26.53 kJ mol-1 for 2-NP and 3-NP, respectively. SG-AuNPs maintained high catalytic performance after five recycles. The fabricated material was also found to be highly sensitive and selective to Pb2+ ions with the detection limit of 0.018 μM in a linear range of 0-1000 μM. The practicality of the material was validated through the analyses of Pb2+ in mimic pond water samples. The developed nanoparticles could find tremendous applications in environmental monitoring.

To help those suffering from viral infections and cancers, scientists are exploring enhanced therapeutic methods via metal nanoclusters (MNCs).
