Abstract
Ceria nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) have become popular materials in biomedical and industrial fields due to their potential applications in anti-oxidation, cancer therapy, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, sensors, etc. Many methods, including gas phase, solid phase, liquid phase, and the newly proposed green synthesis method, have been reported for the synthesis of CeO2 NPs. Due to the wide application of CeO2 NPs, concerns about their adverse impacts on human health have been raised. This review covers recent studies on the biomedical applications of CeO2 NPs, including their use in the treatment of various diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, ischemic stroke, retinal damage, chronic inflammation, and cancer). CeO2 NP toxicity is discussed in terms of the different systems of the human body (e.g., cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, neurotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity). This comprehensive review covers both fundamental discoveries and exploratory progress in CeO2 NP research that may lead to practical developments in the future.

Abstract
Nuclear fission reactions can release massive amounts of energy accompanied by neutrons and γ photons, which create a mixed radiation field and enable a series of reactions in nuclear reactors. This study demonstrates a one-pot/one-step approach to synthesizing radioactive gold nanoparticles (RGNP) without using radioactive precursors and reducing agents. Trivalent gold ions are reduced into gold nanoparticles (8.6-146 nm), and a particular portion of 197Au atoms is simultaneously converted to 198Au atoms, rendering the nanoparticles radioactive. We suggest that harnessing nuclear energy to gold nanoparticles is feasible in the interests of advancing nanotechnology for cancer therapy. A combination of RGNP applied through convection-enhanced delivery (CED) and temozolomide (TMZ) through oral administration demonstrates the synergistic effect in treating glioblastoma-bearing mice. The mean survival for RGNP/TMZ treatment was 68.9 ± 9.7 days compared to that for standalone RGNP (38.4 ± 2.2 days) or TMZ (42.8 ± 2.5 days) therapies. Based on the verification of bioluminescence images, positron emission tomography, and immunohistochemistry inspection, the combination treatment can inhibit the proliferation of glioblastoma, highlighting the niche of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) attributed to RGNP and TMZ.

Abstract
Diesel fuel blends with biodiesels are expected to mitigate the rising price and demand of conventional fuels. Biodiesel fuel blends are also known to reduce engine emissions. Biodiesel is produced from various sources, one of which is Calophyllum Inophyllum methyl ester biodiesel (CIMEBD). Even though it serves to mitigate the energy crisis and has a low overall carbon footprint, CIMEBD has certain negative issues relating to engine performance and emission characteristics. Nanoparticle (NP) addition is known to enhance the engine performance characteristics of next generation biofuels. CeO2 (cerium oxide or ceria) NPs of varying size are used in this study along with 25:75 biodiesel-diesel (BD) blend and a fixed NP concentration of 90 ppm. Ceria NP-doped fuel is shown to have better engine performance compared to diesel and BD blend for all load conditions. Improvements in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) values equal to +30% and -46%, respectively, are observed from experiments for ceria NP-doped biodiesel, compared to diesel-biodiesel (BD) blend. Ceria NPs in the 20 to 40 nm range have optimum engine performance characteristics. Compared to BD blends, NP-doped biodiesel shows improvements in NOx, CO, CO2, UHC, and soot parameters up to -35%, -60%, -35%, -38%, and -40%, respectively. Likewise, the optimum size of ceria NPs is in the range 20-40 nm for better emission characteristics.

Abstract
In this study, a ratiometric optical fiber dissolved oxygen sensor based on dynamic quenching of fluorescence from a ruthenium complex is reported. Tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthrolin) ruthenium(II) dichloride complex (Ru(dpp)32+) is used as an oxygen-sensitive dye, and semiconductor nanomaterial CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are used as a reference dye by mixing the two substances and coating it on the plastic optical fiber end to form a composite sensitive film. The linear relationship between the relative fluorescence intensity of the ruthenium complex and the oxygen concentration is described using the Stern–Volmer equation, and the ruthenium complex doping concentration in the sol-gel film is tuned. The sensor is tested in gaseous oxygen and aqueous solution. The experimental results indicate that the measurement of dissolved oxygen has a lower sensitivity in an aqueous environment than in a gaseous environment. This is due to the uneven distribution of oxygen in aqueous solution and the low solubility of oxygen in water, which results in a small contact area between the ruthenium complex and oxygen in solution, leading to a less-severe fluorescence quenching effect than that in gaseous oxygen. In detecting dissolved oxygen, the sensor has a good linear Stern–Volmer calibration plot from 0 to 18.25 mg/L, the linearity can reach 99.62%, and the sensitivity can reach 0.0310/[O2] unit. The salinity stability, repeatability, and temperature characteristics of the sensor are characterized. The dissolved oxygen sensor investigated in this research could be used in various marine monitoring and environmental protection applications.

Abstract
The catalytic performance of gold (Au) decorated cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria) can be potentially crucial because such a defined arrangement of multiple materials may provide improved chemical and biological catalytic activities. In this work, we have utilized a highly localized approach to reduce Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the nanoceria-phosphotungstate composite's surface. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) bound on nanoceria's surface acts as a UV-light dependent redox molecule that specifically reduces AuNPs. The mechanistic study demonstrates that PTA* molecules outstanding electron transfer ability leads to an excellent improvement in the catalytic performance of nanoceria-PTA*-AuNPs composite. Nanoceria-PTA*-AuNPs showed better and faster degradation of 4-nitrophenol than either nanoceria or PTA*-AuNPs. The developed nanoceria-PTA*-AuNPs exhibited efficient (>80 % in 5 min) conversion of 4-NP into 4-AP at room temperature and neutral pH. Additionally, the nanoceria-PTA*-AuNPs also showed improved peroxidase enzyme-like activity than the corresponding control samples. The observed catalytic activity could be due to the rapid electron transfer from nanoceria to AuNPs, where the metal nanoparticle acts as an electron sink, mediated by PTA*. Nanoceria-PTA*-AuNPs showed ∼ 2-fold better catalytic oxidation of peroxidase substrate than PTA*-AuNPs. The reported nanoceria-PTA*-AuNPs nanocomposites are expected to display improved biological enzyme-like activities, photocatalysis, and other biomedical applications.
