Supported Ultra-Thin Alumina Membranes with Graphene as Efficient Interference Enhanced Raman Scattering Platforms for Sensing

Multiple amplified microRNAs monitoring in living cells based on fluorescence quenching of Mo2B and hybridization chain reaction

Imaging intracellular microRNAs (miRNAs) demonstrated an essential role in exposing their biological and pathological functions. However, the detection of sequence-specific miRNAs in living cells remains a key challenge. Herein, a facile amplified multiple intracellular miRNAs imaging platform was constructed based on Mo₂B nanosheets (NSs) fluorescence (FL) quenching and hybridization chain reaction (HCR). The Mo₂B NSs demonstrated strong interaction with the hairpin probes (HPs), ssDNA loop, and excellent multiple FL dyes quenching performance, achieving ultralow background signal. After transfection, the HPs recognized specific targets miRNAs, the corresponding HCR was triggered to produce tremendous DNA-miRNA duplex helixes, which dissociated from the surface of the Mo₂B NSs to produce strong FL for miRNAs detection. It realized to image multiple miRNAs biomarkers in different cells to discriminate cancer cells from normal cells owing to the excellent sensitivity, and the regulated expression change of miRNAs in cancer cells was also successfully monitored. The facile and versatile Mo₂B-based FL quenching platform open an avenue to profile miRNAs expression pattern in living cells, and has great applications in miRNAs based biological and biomedical research.

Recent Progress in the Fabrication and Optical Properties of Nanoporous Anodic Alumina

The fabrication of a thick oxide layer onto an aluminum surface via anodization has been a subject of intense research activity for more than a century, largely due to protective and decorative applications. The capability to create well-defined pores via a cost-effective electrochemical oxidation technique onto the surface has made a major renaissance in the field, as the porous surfaces exhibit remarkably different properties compared to a bulk oxide layer. Amongst the various nanoporous structures being investigated, nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) with well-organized and highly ordered hexagonal honeycomb-like pores has emerged as the most popular nanomaterial due to its wide range of applications, ranging from corrosion resistance to bacterial repelling surfaces. As compared to conventional nanostructure fabrication, the electrochemical anodization route of NAA with well-controlled pore parameters offers an economical route for fabricating nanoscale materials. The review comprehensively reflects the progress made in the fabrication route of NAA to obtain the material with desired pore properties, with a special emphasis on self-organization and pore growth kinetics. Detailed accounts of the various conditions that can play an important role in pore growth kinetics and pore parameters are presented. Further, recent developments in the field of controlling optical properties of NAA are discussed. A critical outlook on the future trends of the fabrication of NAA and its optical properties on the emerging nanomaterials, sensors, and devices are also outlined.

Raman and Fluorescence Enhancement Approaches in Graphene-Based Platforms for Optical Sensing and Imaging

The search for novel platforms and metamaterials for the enhancement of optical and particularly Raman signals is still an objective since optical techniques offer affordable, noninvasive methods with high spatial resolution and penetration depth adequate to detect and image a large variety of systems, from 2D materials to molecules in complex media and tissues. Definitely, plasmonic materials produce the most efficient enhancement through the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) process, allowing single-molecule detection, and are the most studied ones. Here we focus on less explored aspects of SERS such as the role of the inter-nanoparticle (NP) distance and the ultra-small NP size limit (down to a few nm) and on novel approaches involving graphene and graphene-related materials. The issues on reproducibility and homogeneity for the quantification of the probe molecules will also be discussed. Other light enhancement mechanisms, in particular resonant and interference Raman scatterings, as well as the platforms that allow combining several of them, are presented in this review with a special focus on the possibilities that graphene offers for the design and fabrication of novel architectures. Recent fluorescence enhancement platforms and strategies, so important for bio-detection and imaging, are reviewed as well as the relevance of graphene oxide and graphene/carbon nanodots in the field.

Recent Advances in Nanoporous Anodic Alumina: Principles, Engineering, and Applications

The development of aluminum anodization technology features many stages. With the story stretching for almost a century, rather straightforward-from current perspective-technology, raised into an iconic nanofabrication technique. The intrinsic properties of alumina porous structures constitute the vast utility in distinct fields. Nanoporous anodic alumina can be a starting point for: Templates, photonic structures, membranes, drug delivery platforms or nanoparticles, and more. Current state of the art would not be possible without decades of consecutive findings, during which, step by step, the technique was more understood. This review aims at providing an update regarding recent discoveries-improvements in the fabrication technology, a deeper understanding of the process, and a practical application of the material-providing a narrative supported with a proper background.
