Abstract
Optical sensors excel in performance but face efficacy challenges when submerged due to potential surface colonization, leading to signal deviation. This necessitates robust solutions for sustained accuracy. Protein and microorganism adsorption on solid surfaces is crucial in antibiofilm studies, contributing to conditioning film and biofilm formation. Most studies focus on surface characteristics (hydrophilicity, roughness, charge, and composition) individually for their adhesion impact. In this work, we tested four materials: silica, titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide, and parylene C. Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) served as the biofouling conditioning model, assessed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Its effect on microorganism adhesion (modeled with functionalized microbeads) was quantified using a shear stress flow chamber. Surface features and adhesion properties were correlated via Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Protein adsorption is influenced by nanoscale roughness, hydrophilicity, and likely correlated with superficial electron distribution and bond nature. Conditioning films alter the surface interaction with microbeads, affecting hydrophilicity and local charge distribution. Silica shows a significant increase in microbead adhesion, while parylene C exhibits a moderate increase, and titanium dioxide shows reduced adhesion. Alumina demonstrates notable stability, with the conditioning film minimally impacting adhesion, which remains low.

Abstract
Biofouling is the assemblage of undesirable biological materials and macro-organisms (barnacles, mussels, etc.) on submerged surfaces, which has unfavorable impacts on the economy and maritime environments. Recently, research efforts have focused on isolating natural, eco-friendly antifouling agents to counteract the toxicities of synthetic antifouling agents. Marine actinomycetes produce a multitude of active metabolites, some of which acquire antifouling properties. These antifouling compounds have chemical structures that fall under the terpenoids, polyketides, furanones, and alkaloids chemical groups. These compounds demonstrate eminent antimicrobial vigor associated with antiquorum sensing and antibiofilm potentialities against both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. They have also constrained larval settlements and the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, suggesting a strong anti-macrofouling activity. Despite their promising in vitro and in vivo biological activities, scaled-up production of natural antifouling agents retrieved from marine actinomycetes remains inapplicable and challenging. This might be attributed to their relatively low yield, the unreliability of in vitro tests, and the need for optimization before scaled-up manufacturing. This review will focus on some of the most recent marine actinomycete-derived antifouling agents, featuring their biological activities and chemical varieties after providing a quick overview of the disadvantages of fouling and commercially available synthetic antifouling agents. It will also offer different prospects of optimizations and analysis to scale up their industrial manufacturing for potential usage as antifouling coatings and antimicrobial and therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Biofilms are highly resistant to antimicrobials and are a common problem in many industries, including pharmaceutical, food and beverage. Yeast biofilms can be formed by various yeast species, including Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Cryptococcus neoformans. Yeast biofilm formation is a complex process that involves several stages, including reversible adhesion, followed by irreversible adhesion, colonization, exopolysaccharide matrix formation, maturation and dispersion. Intercellular communication in yeast biofilms (quorum-sensing mechanism), environmental factors (pH, temperature, composition of the culture medium), and physicochemical factors (hydrophobicity, Lifshitz-van der Waals and Lewis acid-base properties, and electrostatic interactions) are essential to the adhesion process. Studies on the adhesion of yeast to abiotic surfaces such as stainless steel, wood, plastic polymers, and glass are still scarce, representing a gap in the field. The biofilm control formation can be a challenging task for food industry. However, some strategies can help to reduce biofilm formation, such as good hygiene practices, including regular cleaning and disinfection of surfaces. The use of antimicrobials and alternative methods to remove the yeast biofilms may also be helpful to ensure food safety. Furthermore, physical control measures such as biosensors and advanced identification techniques are promising for yeast biofilms control. However, there is a gap in understanding why some yeast strains are more tolerant or resistant to sanitization methods. A better understanding of tolerance and resistance mechanisms can help researchers and industry professionals to develop more effective and targeted sanitization strategies to prevent bacterial contamination and ensure product quality. This review aimed to identify the most important information about yeast biofilms in the food industry, followed by the removal of these biofilms by antimicrobial agents. In addition, the review summarizes the alternative sanitizing methods and future perspectives for controlling yeast biofilm formation by biosensors.

Abstract
The glaucoma burden increases continuously and is estimated to affect more than 100 million people by 2040. As there is currently no cure to restore the optic nerve damage caused by glaucoma, the only controllable parameter is the intraocular pressure (IOP). In recent years, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) has emerged as an alternative to traditional treatments. It uses micro-sized drainage stents that are inserted through a small incision, minimizing the trauma to the tissue and reducing surgical and postoperative recovery time. However, a major challenge for MIGS devices is foreign body reaction and fibrosis, which can lead to a complete failure of the device. In this work, the antifibrotic potential of tetrapodal ZnO (t-ZnO) microparticles used as an additive is elucidated by using rat embryonic fibroblasts as a model. A simple, direct solvent-free process for the fabrication of stents with an outer diameter of 200-400 μm is presented, in which a high amount of t-ZnO particles (45-75 wt %) is mixed into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a highly viscous polymer/particle mixture is extruded. The fabricated stents possess increased elastic modulus compared to pure PDMS while remaining flexible to adapt to the curvature of an eye. In vitro experiments showed that the fibroblast cell viability was inhibited to 43 ± 3% when stents with 75 wt % t-ZnO were used. The results indicate that cell inhibiting properties can be attributed to an increased amount of protruding t-ZnO particles on the stent surface, leading to an increase in local contacts with cells and a disruption of the cell membrane. As a secondary mechanism, the released Zn ions could also contribute to the cell-inhibiting properties in the close vicinity of the stent surface. Overall, the fabrication method and the antifibrotic and mechanical properties of developed stents make them promising for application in MIGS.

Abstract
The proliferation of microorganisms is an important reason for meat spoilage and deterioration. Freezing and packaging by polymer films and preservatives are commonly used to preserve meat. While the energy consumption of freezing is very big, the polymer films made by petroleum bring up heavy environmental pressure. In the present study, biodegradable antibacterial ZnO@PLA (ZP) and ZnO@PVA/PLA (ZPP) nanocomposite films used as food packaging have been synthesized by the solvent evaporation method and coating method, respectively. Compared with films without ZnO NPs, ZP and ZPP both had long-term bacteriostasis for 24 and 120 h at temperatures of 25 and 4 °C, respectively. Moreover, the antibacterial effect showed positive relevance with the increase of the ZnO NP concentration. In addition, the antibacterial effect of ZPP was better than that of ZP in the same condition. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the numbers of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on ZP and ZPP were significantly reduced compared to that in the blank film, and ZPP caused the morphology of MRSA to change, which means that the antibacterial mechanism of ZP and ZPP composite films might be related to antibacterial adhesion. In conclusion, ZPP films have great potential to be regarded as the candidate of food packing to extend the shelf life of pork.

Abstract
In our study, we demonstrated the performance of antimicrobial coatings on properly functionalized and nanostructured 316L food-grade stainless steel pipelines. For the fabrication of these functional coatings, we employed facile and low-cost electrochemical techniques and surface modification processes. The development of a nanoporous structure on the 316L stainless steel surface was performed by following an electropolishing process in an electrolytic bath, at a constant anodic voltage of 40 V for 10 min, while the temperature was maintained between 0 and 10 °C. Subsequently, we incorporated on this nanostructure additional coatings with antimicrobial and bactericide properties, such as Ag nanoparticles, Ag films, or TiO2 thin layers. These functional coatings were grown on the nanostructured substrate by following electroless process, electrochemical deposition, and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques. Then, we analyzed the antimicrobial efficiency of these functionalized materials against different biofilms types (Candida parapsilosis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis). The results of the present study demonstrate that the nanostructuring and surface functionalization processes constitute a promising route to fabricate novel functional materials exhibiting highly efficient antimicrobial features. In fact, we have shown that our use of an appropriated association of TiO2 layer and Ag nanoparticle coatings over the nanostructured 316L stainless steel exhibited an excellent antimicrobial behavior for all biofilms examined.
