Hybrid Perovskite Terahertz Photoconductive Antenna

Pulsed THz radiation under ultrafast optical discharge of vacuum photodiode

In this paper, we first present an experimental demonstration of terahertz radiation pulse generation with energy up to 5 pJ under the electron emission during ultrafast optical discharge of a vacuum photodiode. We use a femtosecond optical excitation of metallic copper photocathode for the generation of ultrashort electron bunch and up to 45 kV/cm external electric field for the photo-emitted electron acceleration. Measurements of terahertz pulses energy as a function of emitted charge density, incidence angle of optical radiation and applied electric field have been provided. Spectral and polarization characteristics of generated terahertz pulses have also been studied. The proposed semi-analytical model and simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics prove the experimental data and allow for the optimization of experimental conditions aimed at flexible control of radiation parameters.

Terahertz Biosensor Engineering Based on Quasi-BIC Metasurface with Ultrasensitive Detection

Terahertz (THz) sensors have attracted great attention in the biological field due to their nondestructive and contact-free biochemical samples. Recently, the concept of a quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) has gained significant attention in designing biosensors with ultrahigh sensitivity. QBIC-based metasurfaces (MSs) achieve excellent performance in various applications, including sensing, optical switching, and laser, providing a reliable platform for biomaterial sensors with terahertz radiation. In this study, a structure-engineered THz MS consisting of a "double C" array has been designed, in which an asymmetry parameter α is introduced into the structure by changing the length of one subunit; the Q-factor of the QBIC device can be optimized by engineering the asymmetry parameter α. Theoretical calculation with coupling equations can well reproduce the THz transmission spectra of the designed THz QBIC MS obtained from the numerical simulation. Experimentally, we adopt an MS with α = 0.44 for testing arginine molecules. The experimental results show that different concentrations of arginine molecules lead to significant transmission changes near QBIC resonant frequencies, and the amplitude change is shown to be 16 times higher than that of the classical dipole resonance. The direct limit of detection for arginine molecules on the QBIC MS reaches 0.36 ng/mL. This work provides a new way to realize rapid, accurate, and nondestructive sensing of trace molecules and has potential application in biomaterial detection.

Mechanical Control of Polaritonic States in Lead Halide Perovskite Phonons Strongly Coupled in THz Microcavity

We demonstrate the generation and control of polaritonic states in perovskite phonon polaritons, which are strongly coupled in the middle of a flexible Fabry-Perot cavity. We fabricated flexible perovskite films on a microporous substrate coated with graphene oxide, which led to a virtually free-standing film incorporated into the microcavity. Rabi splitting was observed when the cavity resonance was in tune with that of the phonons. The Rabi splitting energy increased as the film thickness increased, reaching 1.9 meV, which is 2.4-fold higher than the criterion for the strong coupling regime. We obtained dispersion curves for various perovskite film thicknesses exhibiting two polariton branches; clear beats between the two polaritonic branches were observed in the time domain. Flexible cavity devices with perovskite phonons enable macroscopic control over the polaritonic energy states through bending processes, which add an additional degree of freedom in the manipulation of polaritonic devices.

Mechanical stress induces a scalable circularly polarized LEO satellite antenna with Quadrifilar spiral

This paper investigates a left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) antenna and a right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna on LEO Satellite, which is based on the phase-tuning metasurface. We overcome its inherent limitations in size, weight and power, and designed a high-gain, ultra-lightweight, scalable antenna for small satellite communications. The antenna can generate continuous and large tunability of subwavelength, with low-Q resonators. The simulated and experimental results verify that different capacitance and inductance modes can be effectively generated by rotating the spiral arms of single-arm spiral antennas with corresponding degrees, which greatly simplify the feeding network. The maximum gain of the normal position within the angle of the uplink and downlink is 4~9 dBi higher than that of the ordinary polarized antenna. In addition, the design method proposed to this article is superior to the reference system in terms of impedance bandwidth, axial ratio bandwidth, and operation frequency. The performance achievements of this paper are implemented within the bandwidth of 3 MHz of uplink and downlink, such as impedance bandwidth is 3 MHz with impedance of 50, axial ratio bandwidth is 2.5 MHz, operation frequency of uplink is 240-243 MHz, downlink is 320 MHz and 401 MHz, and the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is less than 2 dB which is so called S parameter, the above parameters can meet the performance index design requirements.

Terahertz Wave Absorption Property of all Mixed Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Thin Film MA(Sn, Pb)(Br, I)3 Fabricated by Sequential Vacuum Evaporation Method

All mixed hybrid perovskite (MA(Sn, Pb)(Br,I)3) thin film was fabricated by sequential vacuum evaporation method. To optimize the first layer with PbBr2 and SnI2, we performed different annealing treatments. Further, MA(Sn, Pb)(Br, I)3 thin film was synthesized on the optimized first layer by evaporating MAI and post-annealing. The formed hybrid perovskite thin film exhibited absorptions at 1.0 and 1.7 THz with small absorbance (<10%). Moreover, no chemical and structural defect-incorporated absorption was found. In this study, the possibility of changing terahertz absorption frequency through the mixture of metal cations (Sn+ and Pb+) and halogen anions (Br- and I-) was verified.
