A Generalized Approach for Evaluating the Mechanical Properties of Polymer Nanocomposites Reinforced with Spherical Fillers

Soft Viscoelastic Magnetic Hydrogels from the In Situ Mineralization of Iron Oxide in Metal-Coordinate Polymer Networks

The design of soft magnetic hydrogels with high concentrations of magnetic particles is complicated by weak retention of the iron oxide particles in the hydrogel scaffold. Here, we propose a design strategy that circumvents this problem through the in situ mineralization of iron oxide nanoparticles within polymer hydrogels functionalized with strongly iron-coordinating nitrocatechol groups. The mineralization process facilitates the synthesis of a high concentration of large iron oxide nanoparticles (up to 57 wt % dry mass per single cycle) in a simple one-step process under ambient conditions. The resulting hydrogels are soft (kPa range) and viscoelastic and exhibit strong magnetic actuation. This strategy offers a pathway for the energy-efficient design of soft, mechanically robust, and magneto-responsive hydrogels for biomedical applications.

Transport and mechanical behavior in PEO-LLZO composite electrolytes

Composite solid electrolytes (CEs), wherein ion-conducting polymer and ceramic/glass is mixed, are promising candidates for all-solid-state batteries due to their promise of acceptable ionic conductivity and mechanical properties compared to their individual constituents. While numerous studies have focused on improving the performance of CEs, it is still unclear what the material targets are that can result in improved macroscopic performance especially in light of the coupled needs for high transport and high mechanical strength in these materials. In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) mathematical model is developed to investigate electrochemical and mechanical characteristics of CEs. The model is compared to CEs consisting of poly-ethylene-oxide (PEO) polymer and lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO) ceramic material with examination of the impact of varying LLZO volume fractions. The potential drop at the PEO-LLZO interface is evaluated using the junction potential theory. Using experimental data from the literature, the model estimates the ionic conductivity, effective transference number, and mechanical stiffness of the CEs. While the mechanical stiffness improves with increasing volume fraction of LLZO, the impact on conductivity and transference number depends on interfacial resistance at the interface. Finally, the study reports CE’s potential to enhance Li-ion transport and mechanical properties to inhibit lithium (Li) dendrite growth.

Prediction of the structure and mechanical properties of polycaprolactone-silica nanocomposites and the interphase region by molecular dynamics simulations: the effect of PEGylation

Polymer/silica (PS) nanocomposites are, among numerous combinations of inorganic/organic nanocomposites, one of the most important materials reported in the literature and have been employed in a wide variety of applications. Due to this great interest in the scientific and industry community, knowledge about their physiochemistry allows for a better understanding of their development and improvement. One area of interest found in biopolymers is silica, where silica nanoparticles can be used to increase their mechanical properties and give them higher opportunities to replace synthetic plastics. With this aim in mind, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to predict the structure and mechanical properties of the interphase region and nanocomposite systems of polycaprolactone (PCL), a common poly(hydroxy acid) type biopolymer, reinforced with silica nanoparticles. Two types of nanoparticles were studied to assess the effect of PEGylation: hydroxyl (ungrafted) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) (grafted or PEGylated) functionalized silica. The interaction energy between the nanoparticle and the polymeric matrix was determined, showing an increase of the affinity between each component due to the PEGylation of the nanoparticle. Through the analysis of polymer density profiles, the structure and thickness of the interphase region were determined, and it was observed that PEGylation increased the interphase thickness from 10.80 Å to 13.04 Å while it decreased the peak and average polymer density of the interphase region. Using compressed and expanded molecular models of the neat PCL polymer, the mechanical properties of the interphase region were related to its density through an interpolation model, and mechanical property profiles were obtained, from which the average values of the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and shear modulus of the interphase region were calculated. Finally, the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined by molecular mechanics simulations, showing that the silica nanoparticles increased the stiffness of the composite system to about 7-8% with respect to that of the neat polymer, having a 2.09% weight of bare silica or 2.82% weight of PEGylated silica. PEGylation did not show an additional effect on the overall mechanical properties. A mean field micromechanics model (Mori-Tanaka) corroborated the properties calculated for the interphase region using MD simulations. It was concluded that the PEGylation of the nanoparticle improved the affinity, and thus the dispersion, of the silica nanoparticles towards the PCL matrix, but with no further increase in the mechanical properties of the composite.

Advances in Functional Biopolymer-Based Nanocomposites for Active Food Packaging Applications

Polymeric nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. The demand for new methods of food preservation to ensure high-quality, healthy foods with an extended shelf life has increased. Packaging, a crucial feature of the food industry, plays a vital role in satisfying this demand. Polymeric nanocomposites exhibit remarkably improved packaging properties, including barrier properties, oxygen impermeability, solvent resistance, moisture permeability, thermal stability, and antimicrobial characteristics. Bio-based polymers have drawn considerable interest to mitigate the influence and application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. The integration of nanotechnology in food packaging systems has shown promise for enhancing the quality and shelf life of food. This article provides a general overview of bio-based polymeric nanocomposites comprising polymer matrices and inorganic nanoparticles, and describes their classification, fabrication, properties, and applications for active food packaging systems with future perspectives.
