Exploring the Structural Competition between the Black and the Yellow Phase of CsPbI3

Elucidating Black α-CsPbI3 Perovskite Stabilization via PPD Bication-Conjugated Molecule Surface Passivation: Ab Initio Simulations

The cubic α-CsPbI3 phase stands out as one of the most promising perovskite compounds for solar cell applications due to its suitable electronic band gap of 1.7 eV. However, it exhibits structural instability under operational conditions, often transforming into the hexagonal non-perovskite δ-CsPbI3 phase, which is unsuitable for solar cell applications because of the large band gap (e.g., ∼2.9 eV). Thus, there is growing interest in identifying possible mechanisms for increasing the stability of the cubic α-CsPbI3 phase. Here, we report a theoretical investigation, based on density functional theory calculations, of the surface passivation of the α-, γ-, and δ-CsPbI3(100) surfaces using the C6H4(NH3)2 [p-phenylenediamine (PPD)] and Cs species as passivation agents. Our calculations and analyses corroborate recent experimental findings, showing that PPD passivation effectively stabilizes the cubic α-CsPbI3 perovskite against the cubic-to-hexagonal phase transition. The PPD molecule exhibits covalent-dominating bonds with the substrate, which makes it more resistant to distortion than the ionic bonds dominant in perovskite bulks. By contrasting these results with the natural Cs passivation, we highlight the superior stability of the PPD passivation, as evidenced by the negative surface formation energies, unlike the positive values observed for the Cs passivation. This disparity is due to the covalent characteristics of the molecule/surface interaction of PPD, as opposed to the purely ionic interaction seen with the Cs passivation. Notably, the PPD passivation maintains the optoelectronic properties of the perovskites because the electronic states derived from the PPD molecules are localized far from the band gap region, which is crucial for optoelectronic applications.

X-ray Investigation of CsPbI3:EuCl3 Infiltrated into Gig-Lox TiO2 Spongy Layers for Perovskite Solar Cells Applications

In this study, we explore the potential of a blended material comprising CsPbI3:EuCl3 perovskite and Gig-Lox TiO2, a unique transparent spongy material known for its multi-branched porous structure, for application in solar cells. The inclusion of EuCl3 in CsPbI3 serves to stabilize the photoactive γ-phase with a bandgap of 1.75 eV, making it suitable for solar energy conversion in tandem solar cells. Our study applies X-ray-based techniques to investigate the structural properties and interfacial behavior within this blended material, in comparison with a reference perovskite layer deposited on glass. In addition, Spectroscopic ellipsometry is complemented with density functional theory calculations and photoluminescence measurements to elucidate the absorption and radiative emission properties of the blend. Notably, our findings reveal a significant quenching of photoluminescence within the blended material, underscoring the pivotal role of the distributed interfaces in facilitating efficient carrier injection from the CsPbI3:EuCl3 perovskite into the Gig-Lox TiO2 sponge. These findings pave the way for the application of the blend as an Electron Transport Layer (ETL) in semi-transparent perovskite solar cells for tandem and building integrated photovoltaics.

Experimental absence of the non-perovskite ground state phases of MaPbI3 explained by a Funnel Hopping Monte Carlo study based on a neural network potential

Methylammonium lead iodide is a material known for its exceptional opto-electronic properties that make it a promising candidate for many high performance applications, such as light emitting diodes or solar cells. A recent computational structure search revealed two previously unknown non-perovskite polymorphs, that are lower in energy than the experimentally observed perovskite phases. To investigate the elusiveness of the non-perovskite phases in experimental studies, we extended our Funnel Hopping Monte Carlo (FHMC) method to periodic systems and performed extensive MC simulations driven by a machine learned potential. FHMC simulations that also include these newly discovered non-perovskite phases show that above temperatures of 200 K the perovskite phases are thermodynamically preferred. A comparison with the quasi-harmonic approximation highlights the importance of anharmonic effects captured by FHMC.

Formation Mechanisms and Phase Stability of Solid-State Grown CsPbI3 Perovskites

CsPbI3 inorganic perovskite is synthesized by a solvent-free, solid-state reaction, and its structural and optical properties can be deeply investigated using a multi-technique approach. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman measurements, optical absorption, steady-time and time-resolved luminescence, as well as High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) imaging, were exploited to understand phase evolution as a function of synthesis time length. Nanoparticles with multiple, well-defined crystalline domains of different crystalline phases were observed, usually surrounded by a thin, amorphous/out-of-axis shell. By increasing the synthesis time length, in addition to the pure α phase, which was rapidly converted into the δ phase at room temperature, a secondary phase, Cs4PbI6, was observed, together with the 715 nm-emitting γ phase.
