Nucleation and Growth-Controlled Facile Fabrication of Gold Nanoporous Structures for Highly Sensitive Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Applications

Benchtop Fabricated Nano-Roughened Microstructured Electrodes for Electrochemical and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing

Tailoring a material's surface with hierarchical structures from the micro- to the nanoscale is key for fabricating highly sensitive detection platforms. To achieve this, the fabrication method should be simple, inexpensive, and yield materials with a high density of surface features. Here, using benchtop fabrication techniques, gold surfaces with hierarchically structured roughness are generated for sensing applications. Hierarchical gold electrodes are prepared on pre-stressed polystyrene substrates via electroless deposition and amperometric pulsing. Electrodes fabricated using 1 mm H[AuCl₄] and roughened with 80 pulses revealed the highest electroactive surface area. These electrodes are used for enzyme-free detection of glucose in the presence of bovine serum albumin and achieved a limit of detection of 0.36 mm, below glucose concentrations in human blood. The surfaces nanoroughened with 100 pulses also showed excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) response for the detection of rhodamine 6G, with an enhancement factor of ≈2 × 106 compared to detection in solution, and for the detection of a self-assembled monolayer of thiophenol, with an enhancement factor of ≈30 compared to the response from microstructured gold surfaces. It is envisioned that the simplicity and low fabrication cost of these gold-roughened structures will expedite the development of electrochemical and SERS sensing devices.

Controllable Preparation of Gold Nanocrystals with Different Porous Structures for SERS Sensing

Porous Au nanocrystals (Au NCs) have been widely used in catalysis, sensing, and biomedicine due to their excellent localized surface plasma resonance effect and a large number of active sites exposed by three-dimensional internal channels. Here, we developed a ligand-induced one-step method for the controllable preparation of mesoporous, microporous, and hierarchical porous Au NCs with internal 3D connecting channels. At 25 °C, using glutathione (GTH) as both a ligand and reducing agent combined with the Au precursor to form GTH-Au(I), and under the action of the reducing agent ascorbic acid, the Au precursor is reduced in situ to form a dandelion-like microporous structure assembled by Au rods. When cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₆TAB) and GTH are used as ligands, mesoporous Au NCs formed. When increasing the reaction temperature to 80 °C, hierarchical porous Au NCs with both microporous and mesoporous structures will be synthesized. We systematically explored the effect of reaction parameters on porous Au NCs and proposed possible reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, we compared the SERS-enhancing effect of Au NCs with three different pore structures. With hierarchical porous Au NCs as the SERS base, the detection limit for rhodamine 6G (R6G) reached 10^-10 M.

Ultra-bright and narrow-band emission from Ag atomic sized nanoclusters in a self-assembled plasmonic resonator

We have proposed, implemented and investigated a novel, efficient quantum emitter based on an atomic-sized Ag nanocluster in a plasmonic resonator. The quantum emitter enables the realization of: (1) ultra-bright fluorescence, (2) narrow-band emission down to 4 nm, (3) ultra-short fluorescence lifetime. The fluorescence cross-section of a quantum emitter is on the order of σ ∼ 10^-14 cm², which is comparable to the largest fluorescence cross-sections of dye molecules and quantum dots, and enables a light source with a record high intensity known only for plasmon nanolasers. The results presented suggest a unique method for fabricating nanoprobes with high brightness and wavelength-tunable spectrally narrow fluorescence, which is needed for multiplex diagnostics and detection of substances at extremely low concentrations.
