Evaluation of Multiple Semi-Twisted Tape Inserts in a Heat Exchanger Pipe Using Al2O3 Nanofluid

Thermal and Flow Analysis of TiO2 Nanofluid Flow in Circular and Square Ducts with Multiple Twisted Tape Inserts

A numerical study is conducted to observe the thermal and flow performance of TiO2 nanofluid in the circular and square ducts with different twisted tape arrangements. The presence of the twisted tape in the tube induces swirl flow, which aids in the heat transfer, but at the penalty of a higher friction factor. The results also reveal that the maximum Nusselt number enhancement is obtained in the circular tube when the counter-triple twisted tape arrangement (C-TTs) is adopted while it is co-triple twisted tape arrangement (Co-TTs) for the case of square duct. Besides, the highest friction factor is observed for the Co-TTs for both circular and square ducts. The heat transfer and friction factor in the circular duct are greater than that of the square duct. The highest thermal performance factor of 1.286 is obtained when the single twisted tape and 1.5% nanofluid are used in the circular tube. However, multiple twisted tape inserts in the square duct contributes to improved thermal performance at a relatively lower friction factor when compared to the circular tube. Therefore, it is recommended to implement the square duct with multiple inserts for compact or microchannel heat exchanger for heat transfer application.

A Review Study for a Twisted Tube Heat Exchanger

They are considering the increasing demand and urgent need in different industries and the importance of heat exchangers imposed the development of heat exchangers to increase heat transfer and increase general performance, reducing volume and cost. The essential heat exchanger used in many industries is the double tube heat exchanger. This type has been distinguished by its simplicity and wide use in recent years. Several improvement methods have been applied, including passive, active, and compound techniques. Passive technologies change the geometry of heat exchangers and are one of the most effective processes to increase overall heat performance. Besides, the hybridization of flow liquids is one of the most critical approaches to increase heat transfer as nanofluids. This review discusses and analyzes the evolution of heat exchangers and methods for improving passive heat transmission. In addition, experimental and numerical research that used nanofluids in heat exchangers was discussed. Moreover, different twisted shapes of the heat exchanger tubes (elliptical and oval, square, and triangle) were studied, which generated secondary eddy flow that increases the intensity of turbulence and mixing, thus improving heat transfer. Also, additives inside heat exchanger tubes include twisted tapes, ribs, and conical rings. The engagement between the Nusselt number and the coefficient of friction was also offered.

Investigation of the Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop in Tubes with Transverse Ribs of Zigzag Configurations

Heat transfer through tube walls can be promoted using a ribbed tube configuration. Most of the ribs used in previous reports have equal height along the tube length. In this numerical study, we investigate the heat transfer and pressure drop in a transverse ribbed tube where ribs of unequal heights are mounted such that the tops of the ribs form a zigzag shape. Four configurations were studied. Each configuration had a set of two neighboring ribs of different heights. The set was repeated along the tube length to form a zigzag shape. The rib height ratios, e2/e1, of the four sets were 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0. The ratios of the height of the taller rib, pitch, and width to the tube diameter were kept constant at values of e1/d = 0.1, p/d = 1.0, and w/d = 0.05, respectively. The Reynolds number ranged from 10,000 to 60,000, while the Prandtl number ranged from 0.71 to 7.0. The results from the k-ε and k-ω models were first validated and compared with the experimental results of smooth and ribbed tubes. The two models showed comparable results, with the k-ε showing slightly better performance and was thus selected to perform the current study. It was found that the average Nusselt number increases along with increases in the rib height ratio, Prandtl number, and Reynolds number. The friction factor changed exponentially with the rib height ratio, while the Reynolds number showed a minor effect. At the same pumping power, a maximum thermal performance enhancement of approximately 8% was achieved at rib height ratios of 0.25 and 0.5. The rib height ratio of 0.5 has an advantage over that of 0.25 as it has a higher average Nusselt number. Two correlations were introduced to estimate the Nusselt number and friction factor for the current ribbed tube of zigzag configurations.

Discharge Enhancement in a Triple-Pipe Heat Exchanger Filled with Phase Change Material

This study aims to study the discharging process to verify the influence of geometry modifications and heat transfer flow (HTF) patterns on the performance of a vertical triplex-tube latent heat container. The phase change material (PCM) is included in the middle tube, where the geometry is modified using single or multi-internal frustum tubes instead of straight tubes to enhance the discharging rate. The effects of the HTF flow direction, which is considered by the gravity and opposite-gravity directions, are also examined in four different cases. For the optimal geometry, three scenarios are proposed, i.e., employing a frustum tube for the middle tube, for the inner tube, and at last for both the inner and middle tubes. The effects of various gap widths in the modified geometries are investigated. The results show the advantages of using frustum tubes in increasing the discharging rate and reducing the solidification time compared with that of the straight tube unit due to the higher natural convection effect by proper utilization of frustum tubes. The study of the HTF pattern shows that where the HTF direction in both the inner and outer tubes are in the gravity direction, the maximum discharging rate can be achieved. For the best configuration, the discharge time is reduced negligibly compared with that for the system with straight tubes which depends on the dimensions of the PCM domain.

Solidification Enhancement in a Multi-Tube Latent Heat Storage System for Efficient and Economical Production: Effect of Number, Position and Temperature of the Tubes

Thermal energy storage is an important component in energy units to decrease the gap between energy supply and demand. Free convection and the locations of the tubes carrying the heat-transfer fluid (HTF) have a significant influence on both the energy discharging potential and the buoyancy effect during the solidification mode. In the present study, the impact of the tube position was examined during the discharging process. Liquid-fraction evolution and energy removal rate with thermo-fluid contour profiles were used to examine the performance of the unit. Heat exchanger tubes are proposed with different numbers and positions in the unit for various cases including uniform and non-uniform tubes distribution. The results show that moving the HTF tubes to medium positions along the vertical direction is relatively better for enhancing the solidification of PCM with multiple HTF tubes. Repositioning of the HTF tubes on the left side of the unit can slightly improve the heat removal rate by about 0.2 in the case of p5-u-1 and decreases by 1.6% in the case of p5-u-2. It was found also that increasing the distance between the tubes in the vertical direction has a detrimental effect on the PCM solidification mode. Replacing the HTF tubes on the left side of the unit negatively reduces the heat removal rate by about 1.2 and 4.4%, respectively. Further, decreasing the HTF temperature from 15 °C to 10 and 5 °C can increase the heat removal rate by around 7 and 16%, respectively. This paper indicates that the specific concern to the HTF tube arrangement should be made to improve the discharging process attending free convection impact in phase change heat storage.

Solidification Enhancement in a Triple-Tube Latent Heat Energy Storage System Using Twisted Fins

This work evaluates the influence of combining twisted fins in a triple-tube heat exchanger utilised for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) in three-dimensional numerical simulation and comparing the outcome with the cases of the straight fins and no fins. The phase change material (PCM) is in the annulus between the inner and the outer tube, these tubes include a cold fluid that flows in the counter current path, to solidify the PCM and release the heat storage energy. The performance of the unit was assessed based on the liquid fraction and temperature profiles as well as solidification and the energy storage rate. This study aims to find suitable and efficient fins number and the optimum values of the Re and the inlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid. The outcomes stated the benefits of using twisted fins related to those cases of straight fins and the no-fins. The impact of multi-twisted fins was also considered to detect their influences on the solidification process. The outcomes reveal that the operation of four twisted fins decreased the solidification time by 12.7% and 22.9% compared with four straight fins and the no-fins cases, respectively. Four twisted fins improved the discharging rate by 12.4% and 22.8% compared with the cases of four straight fins and no-fins, respectively. Besides, by reducing the fins’ number from six to four and two, the solidification time reduces by 11.9% and 25.6%, respectively. The current work shows the impacts of innovative designs of fins in the LHTES to produce novel inventions for commercialisation, besides saving the power grid.
