Experimental and Computational Analysis of MnO2@V2C-MXene for Enhanced Energy Storage

Recent Advances in Two-Dimensional MXene for Supercapacitor Applications: Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

MXene is a type of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide and nitride, and its promising energy storage materials highlight its characteristics of high density, high metal-like conductivity, tunable terminals, and charge storage mechanisms known as pseudo-alternative capacitance. MXenes are a class of 2D materials synthesized by chemical etching of the A element in MAX phases. Since they were first discovered more than 10 years ago, the number of distinct MXenes has grown substantially to include numerous M_nX_n-1 (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5), solid solutions (ordered and disordered), and vacancy solids. To date, MXenes used in energy storage system applications have been broadly synthesized, and this paper summarizes the current developments, successes, and challenges of using MXenes in supercapacitors. This paper also reports the synthesis approaches, various compositional issues, material and electrode topology, chemistry, and hybridization of MXene with other active materials. The present study also summarizes MXene's electrochemical properties, applicability in pliant-structured electrodes, and energy storage capabilities when using aqueous/non-aqueous electrolytes. Finally, we conclude by discussing how to reshape the face of the latest MXene and what to consider when designing the next generation of MXene-based capacitors and supercapacitors.

Theoretical investigation of the MXene precursors MoxV4-xAlC3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 4)

By first-principles total-energy calculations, we investigated the thermodynamic stability of the MAX solid solution Mo_xV_4-xAlC₃ in the 0 ≤ x ≤ 4 range. Results evidence that lattice parameter a increases as a function of Mo content, while the c parameter reaches its maximum expansion at x = 2.5. After that, a contraction is noticed. Mo occupies V_I sites randomly until the out-of-plane ordered Mo₂V₂AlC₃ alloy is formed. We employed the Defect Formation Energy (DFE) formalism to evaluate the thermodynamic stability of the alloys. Calculations show five stable compounds. At V-rich conditions and from Mo-rich to Mo-moderated conditions, the pristine V₄AlC₃ MAX is stable. In the region of V-poor conditions, from Mo-rich to Mo-moderated growth conditions, the solid solutions with x = 0.5, 1, and 1.5 and the o-MAX Mo₂V₂AlC₃ are thermodynamically stable. The line profiles of the Electron Localization Function and Bader charge analysis show that the V-C interaction is mainly ionic, while the Mo-C is covalent. Also, the exfoliation energy to obtain a MXene layer is ~ 0.4 eV/Ų. DFE also shows that MXenes exfoliated from the MAX phase with the same Mo content and atomic arrangement are thermodynamically stable. Our results get a deeper atomic scale understanding of the previously reported experimental evidence.

Nickel-adsorbed two-dimensional Nb2C MXene for enhanced energy storage applications

Owing to the tremendous energy storage capacity of two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes), they have been efficiently utilized as a promising candidate in the field of super-capacitors. The energy storage capacity of MXenes can be further enhanced using metal dopants. Herein, we have reported the synthesis of pristine and nickel doped niobium-carbide (Nb₂C) MXenes, their computational and electrochemical properties. Upon introduction of nickel (Ni) the TDOS increases and a continuous DOS pattern is observed which indicates coupling between Ni and pristine MXene. The alterations in the DOS, predominantly in the nearby region of the Fermi level are profitable for our electrochemical applications. Additionally, the Ni-doped sample shows a significant capacitive performance of 666.67 F g⁻¹ which can be attributed to the additional active sites generated by doping with Ni. It is worth noting that doped MXenes exhibited a capacitance retention of 81% up to 10 000 cycles. The current study unveils the opportunities of using MXenes with different metal dopants and hypothesize on their performance for energy storage devices.
