Epoxy/Ionic Liquid-Modified Mica Nanocomposites: Network Formation-Network Degradation Correlation

Chemical and Mechanical Characterization of Unprecedented Transparent Epoxy–Nanomica Composites—New Model Insights for Mechanical Properties

Two nanomicas of similar composition, containing muscovite and quartz, but with different particle size distributions, have been used to prepare transparent epoxy nanocomposites. Their homogeneous dispersion, due to the nano-size, was achieved even without being organically modified, and no aggregation of the nanoparticles was observed, thus maximizing the specific interface between matrix and nanofiller. No exfoliation or intercalation has been observed by XRD, despite the significant dispersion of the filler in the matrix which produced nanocomposites with a loss in transparency in the visible domain of less than 10% in the presence of 1% wt and 3% wt of mica fillers. The presence of micas does not affect the thermal behavior of the nanocomposites, which remains similar to that of the neat epoxy resin. The mechanical characterization of the epoxy resin composites revealed an increased Young’s modulus, whereas tensile strength was reduced. A peridynamics-based representative volume element approach has been implemented to estimate the effective Young’s modulus of the nanomodified materials. The results obtained through this homogenization procedure have been used as input for the analysis of the nanocomposite fracture toughness, which has been carried out by a classical continuum mechanics–peridynamics coupling approach. Comparison with the experimental data confirms the capability of the peridynamics-based strategies to properly model the effective Young’s modulus and fracture toughness of epoxy-resin nanocomposites. Finally, the new mica-based composites exhibit high values of volume resistivity, thus being excellent candidates as insulating materials.

Synthesis, Curing and Thermal Behavior of Amine Hardeners from Potentially Renewable Sources

Research into bio-based epoxy resins has intensified in recent decades. Here, it is of great importance to use raw materials whose use does not compete with food production. In addition, the performance of the newly developed materials should be comparable to that of conventional products. Possible starting materials are lignin degradation products, such as vanillin and syringaldehyde, for which new synthesis routes to the desired products must be found and their properties determined. In this article, the first synthesis of two amine hardeners, starting with vanillin and syringaldehyde, using the Smiles rearrangement reaction is reported. The amine hardeners were mixed with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, and the curing was compared to isophorone diamine, 4-4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone, and 4-Aminonbenzylamine by means of differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the two amines prepared are cold-curing. As TG-MS studies showed, the thermal stability of at least one of the polymers prepared with the potentially bio-based amines is comparable to that of the polymer prepared with isophorone diamine, and similar degradation products are formed during pyrolysis.

Study on tri-imidazole derivatives modified with triazine-trione structure as latent curing agents for epoxy resin

Abstract

In this paper, four novel kinds of triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives (IM-TT, 2MI-TT, 2EI-TT and EMI-TT) were synthesized through the addition reaction between triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) and imidazole (IM), 2-methylimidazole (2MI), 2-ethylimidazole (2EI) and 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (EMI), respectively. The triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives were blended with epoxy resin and the reactivity, thermal latency and thermal property were investigated. The results on curing behaviors indicated that the curing exothermic peaks of the blends with triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives shifted to higher temperatures compared with those with commercial imidazoles. The curing exothermic peak temperatures (Tps) of the synthesized tri-imidazole derivatives were increased by 23–32 ℃ compared with the unmodified imidazoles. In addition, Rheological behavior results indicated that the EP blends with tri-imidazole derivatives also exhibited excellent storage stability which was as long as 38 days under room temperature. Last but not the least, the EP blends with triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives also exhibited high glass transition temperatures due to introducing of triazine-trione structures with high crosslinking density. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the prepared thermosets ranged from 128 to 152 ℃. The triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives provide a way to prepare latency epoxy resin with high high glass transition temperature and long storage stability.

Preparation and thermal cross-linking mechanism of co-polyester fiber with flame retardancy and anti-dripping by in situ polymerization

Extensive research has been conducted on polyester flame retardants and anti-droplet modifications in recent years. The conventional methods used to improve the effectiveness of the anti-droplet modifications usually involve improving the melt fluidity and the combustion char formation through reactive cross-linking. However, these methods, while reducing the droplets, may produce more smoke. This study proposes a combustion cross-linking method which avoids the droplet and flame retardancy synergistic modification problem. Based on the flame retardancy of polyester, anti-droplet properties were realized using a collaborative cross – linking structure formed by a phosphorus – containing flame – retardant group and acid silicon solvent to achieve a flame retardant and anti-droplets result. The results show that the phosphorus–silicon copolyester presents an enhancement effect for flame retardancy, confirmed by obvious reductions in the peak value of heat release rate (78.4%) and total heat release (44.2%). Meanwhile, the total smoke release and smoke product rate of phosphorus–silicon copolyester are decreased by 45.1% and 41.5%, respectively. And the phosphorus–silicon copolyester has a high LOI value of 34.8 ± 0.1% and UL-94 is V-0 rating with superior anti-dripping performance. Flame retardancy index (FRI) of the copolyesters containing phosphorus–silica are up to 4.3093 (good flame retardancy). Nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed for qualitative analysis of network formation by the aid of Cure Index (CI) dimensionless criterion. It was observed that the acidic silica led to Excellent cure situation. The TG-DSC, XPS, and FTIR results validate the thermal cross-linking ability of the copolymer due to the synergistic cross-linking effect between the self-cross-linking characteristic of the catalysed acidic silica sol containing the phosphorus flame retardant. The SEM-EDX and Raman results further verify the effectiveness of the condensed-phase flame-retardant mechanism. Phosphorus–silicon copolyester has good spinnability, flame retardancy and anti-droplets properties. Which provides a simple method for preparing polyester by using this combustion synergistic crosslinking effect to achieve flame retardant and anti-dripping modification of copolymers.
