High-Yield Production of Selected 2D Materials by Understanding Their Sonication-Assisted Liquid-Phase Exfoliation

Dual frequency ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation method for the production of few layer graphene in green solvents

In this work, we implement a dual frequency (24 kHz and 1174 kHz) ultrasonic assisted liquid phase exfoliation (ULPE) technique in deionized water (DIW) and other eco-friendly solvents, to produce a variety of high-quality few-layer graphene (FLG) solutions under controlled ultrasonication conditions. The resulting FLG dispersions of variable sizes (∼0.2-1.5 μm2) confirmed by characterisation techniques comprising UV-Vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). For the first time we demonstrate that high yield of FLG flakes with minimal defects, stable for 6 + months in a solution (stability ∼ 70 %), can be obtained in less than 1-hour of treatment in either water/ethanol (DIW:EtOH) or water/isopropyl alcohol (DIW:IPA) eco-friendly mixtures. We also scrutinized the underlying mechanisms of cavitation using high-speed imaging synchronized with acoustic pressure measurements. The addition of ethanol or IPA to deionized water is proposed to play a central role in exfoliation as it regulates the extend of the cavitation zone, the intensity of the ultrasonic field and, thus, the cavitation effectiveness. Our study revealed that lateral sizes of the obtained FLG depend on the choice of exfoliating media and the diameter of a sonotrode used. This variability offers flexibility in producing FLG of different sizes, applicable in a wide spectrum of size-specific applications.

The therapeutic efficacy of silver loaded rhenium disulfide nanoparticles as a photothermal agent for cancer eradication

Cancer is a life-threatening disease when it is diagnosed at a late stage or treatment procedures fail. Inhibiting cancer cells in the tumor environment is a significant challenge for anticancer therapy. The photothermal effects of nanomaterials are being studied as a new cancer treatment. In this work, rhenium disulfide (ReS2) nanosheets were made by liquid exfoliation with gum arabic (GA) and coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to produce reactive oxygen species that destroy cancer cells. The synthesized AgNP-GA-ReS2 NPs were characterized using UV, DLS, SEM, TEM, and photothermal studies. According to the DLS findings, the NPs were about 216 nm in size and had a zeta potential of 76 mV. The TEM and SEM analyses revealed that the GA-ReS2 formed single-layered nanosheets on which the AgNPs were distributed. The photothermal effects of the AgNP-GA-ReS2 NPs at 50 μg/mL were tested with an 808 nm laser at 1.2 W cm-2, and they reached 55.8 °C after 5 min of laser irradiation. MBA-MB-231 cells were used to test the cytotoxicity of the newly designed AgNP-GA-ReS2 NPs with and without laser irradiation for 5 min. At 50 μg/mL, the AgNP-GA-ReS2 showed cytotoxicity, which was confirmed with calcein and EtBr staining. The DCFH-DA and flow cytometry analyses demonstrated that AgNP-GA-ReS2 nanosheets under NIR irradiation generated ROS with high anticancer activity, in addition to the photothermal effects.

Lignin-ultrasound method: Enhancement of antimicrobial capacity of MoS2-containing films

To improve the antimicrobial ability of MoS2-containing films, we used lignin and triple-frequency ultrasound for liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) to obtain MoS2 nanosheets. Photoresponsive antimicrobial films with MoS2 nanosheets, lignin, polyvinyl alcohol and deep eutectic solvents were subsequently prepared. Lignin functionalized the MoS2 nanosheets by chemically linking with S in MoS2 and significantly improved the exfoliation efficiency. Tri-frequency ultrasound produces beneficial effects on the LPE process by creating a more homogeneous sound field and a stronger degree of cavitation. The concentration of MoS2 nanosheets in the exfoliating solution could reach 1.713 mg/mL under the effect of lignin-ultrasound. The antimicrobial ability of the films was analyzed, and the colony-forming units of E. coli and S. aureus could be reduced from 7 × 106 to 1 × 106 cfu/mL under the irradiation of infrared. The lignin in the film undergoes depolymerization and demethoxylation under the irradiation of infrared to have a more phenolic hydroxyl structure, which confers the growth inhibition ability of the films for bacteria that cannot be in close contact with the film. The method we used has some significance for the preparation of MoS2 nanosheets, and composite films prepared from MoS2, and lignin can be used in food packaging, wound antimicrobials, and other fields.

Preparation of boron nitride nanosheets by glucose-assisted ultrasonic cavitation exfoliation

Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent properties. However, low preparation rates and difficulty in functionalization hinder their further development. This study proposes a novel glucose-assisted ultrasonic cavitation exfoliation (GAUCE) method with glucose as an auxiliary solution to prepare BNNSs. Results show that the method has a high preparation yield of 55.58%, which is higher than the average preparation yield of 33.86%. The mechanism of preparing BNNSs by GAUCE was also investigated. The exfoliation of BNNSs was achieved using the energy of ultrasonic cavitation bubble collapse, which will break the interlayer forces in h-BN. The grafting of hydroxyl groups decomposed by glucose on the edge and surface of BNNSs during cavitation prevented the re-aggregation of the nanosheets, thereby increasing the exfoliation yield of BNNSs. In addition, the contact angle of BNNSs prepared by GAUCE was reduced, and the hydrophilicity was greatly improved.

A Physical Model to Describe the Motion Behavior of BNNSs under Nanosecond Pulses

This paper presents a physical model that provides a comprehensive understanding of the motion behavior of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) immersed in ultrapure deionized water and subjected to a series of nanosecond pulses. In a study conducted by Y. Mi et al. The authors explored the global alignment behavior of BNNSs and fitted the experimental data with an exponential decay function. However, this function lacks clear physical mechanisms and the significance of the fitting parameters remains unclear. To address this issue, we have developed a kinetic model that explicitly describes the underlying physical mechanisms. Furthermore, we propose a simplified mathematical model that not only predicts the displacement of BNNSs but also estimates the total time, velocity, and acceleration of the motion process.

Effect of Different Solvents on Morphology and Gas-Sensitive Properties of Grinding-Assisted Liquid-Phase-Exfoliated MoS2 Nanosheets

Grinding-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation is a widely used method for the preparation of two-dimensional nanomaterials. In this study, N-methylpyrrolidone and acetonitrile, two common grinding solvents, were used during the liquid-phase exfoliation for the preparation of MoS₂ nanosheets. The morphology and structure of MoS₂ nanosheets were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of grinding solvents on the gas-sensing performance of the MoS₂ nanosheets were investigated for the first time. The results show that the sensitivities of MoS₂ nanosheet exfoliation with N-methylpyrrolidone were 2.4-, 1.4-, 1.9-, and 2.7-fold higher than exfoliation with acetonitrile in the presence of formaldehyde, acetone, and ethanol and 98% relative humidity, respectively. MoS₂ nanosheet exfoliation with N-methylpyrrolidone also has fast response and recovery characteristics to 50-1000 ppm of CH₂O. Accordingly, although N-methylpyrrolidone cannot be removed completely from the surface of MoS₂, it has good gas sensitivity compared with other samples. Therefore, N-methylpyrrolidone is preferred for the preparation of gas-sensitive MoS₂ nanosheets in grinding-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation. The results provide an experimental basis for the preparation of two-dimensional materials and their application in gas sensors.

Applications of Graphene-Based Materials in Sensors: A Review

With the research and the development of graphene-based materials, new sensors based on graphene compound materials are of great significance to scientific research and the consumer market. However, in the past ten years, due to the requirements of sensor accuracy, reliability, and durability, the development of new graphene sensors still faces many challenges in the future. Due to the special structure of graphene, the obtained characteristics can meet the requirements of high-performance sensors. Therefore, graphene materials have been applied in many innovative sensor materials in recent years. This paper introduces the important role and specific examples of sensors based on graphene and its base materials in biomedicine, photoelectrochemistry, flexible pressure, and other fields in recent years, and it puts forward the difficulties encountered in the application of graphene materials in sensors. Finally, the development direction of graphene sensors has been prospected. For the past two years of the COVID-19 epidemic, the detection of the virus sensor has been investigated. These new graphene sensors can complete signal detection based on accuracy and reliability, which provides a reference for researchers to select and manufacture sensor materials.
