Research Progress of Plasmonic Nanostructure-Enhanced Photovoltaic Solar Cells

Size and temperature dependent shapes of copper nanocrystals using parallel tempering molecular dynamics

We performed parallel-tempering molecular dynamics simulations to predict the temperature- and size-dependent equilibrium shapes of a series of Cu nanocrystals in the 100- to 200-atom size range. Our study indicates that temperature-dependent, solid-solid shape transitions occur frequently for Cu nanocrystals in this size range. Complementary calculations with electronic density functional theory indicate that vibrational entropy favors nanocrystals with a shape intermediate between a decahedron and an icosahedron. Overall, we find that entropy plays a significant role in determining the shapes Cu nanocrystals, so studies aimed at determining minimum-energy shapes may fail to correctly predict shapes observed at experimental temperatures. We also observe significant shape changes with nanocrystal size - sometimes with changes in a single atom. The information from this study could be useful in efforts to devise processing routes to achieve selective nanocrystal shapes.

Development and Fabrication of a Multi-Layer Planar Solar Light Absorber Achieving High Absorptivity and Ultra-Wideband Response from Visible Light to Infrared

The objective of this study is to create a planar solar light absorber that exhibits exceptional absorption characteristics spanning from visible light to infrared across an ultra-wide spectral range. The eight layered structures of the absorber, from top to bottom, consisted of Al2O3, Ti, Al2O3, Ti, Al2O3, Ni, Al2O3, and Al. The COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation software (version 6.0) was utilized to construct the absorber model and perform simulation analyses. The first significant finding of this study is that as compared to absorbers featuring seven-layered structures (excluding the top Al2O3 layer) or using TiO2 or SiO2 layers as substituted for Al2O3 layer, the presence of the top Al2O3 layer demonstrated superior anti-reflection properties. Another noteworthy finding was that the top Al2O3 layer provided better impedance matching compared to scenarios where it was absent or replaced with TiO2 or SiO2 layers, enhancing the absorber's overall efficiency. Consequently, across the ultra-wideband spectrum spanning 350 to 1970 nm, the average absorptivity reached an impressive 96.76%. One significant novelty of this study was the utilization of various top-layer materials to assess the absorption and reflection spectra, along with the optical-impedance-matching properties of the designed absorber. Another notable contribution was the successful implementation of evaporation techniques for depositing and manufacturing this optimized absorber. A further innovation involved the use of transmission electron microscopy to observe the thickness of each deposition layer. Subsequently, the simulated and calculated absorption spectra of solar energy across the AM1.5 spectrum for both the designed and fabricated absorbers were compared, demonstrating a match between the measured and simulated results.

Piezo inkjet formation of Ag nanoparticles from microdots arrays for surface plasmonic resonance

The study aims to explore a novel approach for fabricating plasmonic nanostructures to enhance the optical properties and performance of various optoelectronic devices. The research begins by employing a piezo-inkjet printing technique to deposit drops containing Ag nanoparticles (NPs) onto a glass substrate at a predefined equidistance, with the goal of obtaining arrays of Ag microdots (Ag-µdots) on the glass substrate. This process is followed by a thermal annealing treatment. The printing parameters are first optimized to achieve uniform deposition of different sizes of Ag-µdots arrays by controlling the number of Ag ink drops. Subsequently, the printed arrays undergo thermal annealing at various temperatures in air for 60 min, enabling precise and uniform control over nanoparticle formation. The printed Ag nanoparticles are characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to analyze their morphological features, ensuring their suitability for plasmonic applications. UV-Vis spectrophotometry is employed to investigate the enhanced surface-plasmonic-resonance properties of the printed AgNPs. Measurements confirm that the equidistant arrays of AgNPs obtained from annealing Ag microdots exhibit enhanced light-matter interaction, leading to a surface plasmon resonance response dependent on the Ag NPs' specific surface area. These enhanced surface plasmonic resonances open avenues for developing cutting-edge optoelectronic devices that leverage the benefits of plasmonic nanostructures, thereby enabling new opportunities for future technological developments across various fields.

Theory of Anisotropic Metal Nanostructures

A significant challenge in the development of functional materials is understanding the growth and transformations of anisotropic colloidal metal nanocrystals. Theory and simulations can aid in the development and understanding of anisotropic nanocrystal syntheses. The focus of this review is on how results from first-principles calculations and classical techniques, such as Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, have been integrated into multiscale theoretical predictions useful in understanding shape-selective nanocrystal syntheses. Also, examples are discussed in which machine learning has been useful in this field. There are many areas at the frontier in condensed matter theory and simulation that are or could be beneficial in this area and these prospects for future progress are discussed.

PyMieLab_V1.0: A software for calculating the light scattering and absorption of spherical particles

Light scattering and absorption by small particles are widely used in fields such as biomedicine, information technology, and energy technology. However, their theoretical study requires not only a high level of knowledge in electromagnetism but also a high level of computer programming skills. To solve this problem, a software called PyMieLab (https://gitlab.com/Climb12/pymielab.git) for calculating the light scattering and absorption of spherical particles has been developed based on Mie theory. This software is interactive, versatile, visual, flexible, and scalable. It has a friendly graphical user interface and can be used as a numerical simulation platform for scientific research, as well as provides a rich database of particle refractive indices. Moreover, it offers a reliable research platform for discovering new optical properties of specific materials and exploring materials with better optical properties in related fields. This paper describes in detail the theoretical basis, the graphical user interface, the calculation functions, the operational and procedural processes, the features, and the numerical verification of the software. It illustrates the application value of the software with two simulation examples.

Geometric Optimization of Perovskite Solar Cells with Metal Oxide Charge Transport Layers

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are a promising area of research among different new generations of photovoltaic technologies. Their manufacturing costs make them appealing in the PV industry compared to their alternatives. Although PSCs offer high efficiency in thin layers, they are still in the development phase. Hence, optimizing the thickness of each of their layers is a challenging research area. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the thickness of each layer on the photoelectric parameters of n-ZnO/p-CH₃NH₃PbI₃/p-NiO_x solar cell through various simulations. Using the Sol-Gel method, PSC structure can be formed in different thicknesses. Our aim is to identify a functional connection between those thicknesses and the optimum open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current. Simulation results show that the maximum efficiency is obtained using a perovskite layer thickness of 200 nm, an electronic transport layer (ETL) thickness of 60 nm, and a hole transport layer (HTL) thickness of 20 nm. Furthermore, the output power, fill factor, open-circuit voltage, and short-circuit current of this structure are 18.9 mW/cm², 76.94%, 1.188 V, and 20.677 mA/cm², respectively. The maximum open-circuit voltage achieved by a solar cell with perovskite, ETL and HTL layer thicknesses of (200 nm, 60 nm, and 60 nm) is 1.2 V. On the other hand, solar cells with the following thicknesses, 800 nm, 80 nm, and 40 nm, and 600 nm, 80 nm, and 80 nm, achieved a maximum short-circuit current density of 21.46 mA/cm² and a fill factor of 83.35%. As a result, the maximum value of each of the photoelectric parameters is found in structures of different thicknesses. These encouraging results are another step further in the design and manufacturing journey of PSCs as a promising alternative to silicon PV.
