Clay-Supported Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Catalytic Advanced Oxidation Processes: A Review

Z-scheme NiO/g-C3N4 nanocomposites prepared using phyto-mediated nickel nanoparticles for the efficient photocatalytic degradation

Highly-effective photocatalyst of NiO/g-C₃N₄ with was successfully synthesized by using phyto-mediated-synthesized nickel nanoparticles. The preparation was initiated by synthesizing nickel nanoparticles by using Tinosphora cordifolia stem extract under ultrasound-assisted method followed by the dispersing onto g-C₃N₄ structure. The study focused on physicochemical characterization and photocatalytic activity as function of the percentage of Ni in the nanocomposite. The photocatalytic activity examinations were carried out to rhodamine B and tetracycline photocatalytic oxidation. The results demonstrated that graphitic carbon nitride is effectively improved the photocatalytic activity of NiO for both photocatalytic oxidation reactions. From the varied Ni content of 5; 10; and 20 %wt., it was also found that the highest photoactivity was achieved by the composite having 10 %wt. of nickel content. The high effectivity was showed by degradation efficiency of 95% toward Rhodamine B and 98% toward tetracycline. The examination on effect of scavengers suggests that Z-scheme involved in the photocatalytic mechanism which facilitated the efficient separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs under visible light illumination. In summary, the present findings provide a green approach for fabricating the effective photocatalysts for organic contaminant degradation.

Photocatalytic Organic Contaminant Degradation of Green Synthesized ZrO2 NPs and Their Antibacterial Activities

The green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles is an efficient, simple, and chemical-free method of producing nanoparticles. The present work reports the synthesis of Murraya koenigii-mediated ZrO2 nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs) and their applications as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent. Capping and stabilization of metal oxide nanoparticles were achieved by using Murraya koenigii leaf extract. The optical, structural, and morphological valance of the ZrO2 NPs were characterized using UV-DRS, FTIR, XRD, and FESEM with EDX, TEM, and XPS. An XRD analysis determined that ZrO2 NPs have a monoclinic structure and a crystallite size of 24 nm. TEM and FESEM morphological images confirm the spherical nature of ZrO2 NPs, and their distributions on surfaces show lower agglomerations. ZrO2 NPs showed high optical absorbance in the UV region and a wide bandgap indicating surface oxygen vacancies and charge carriers. The presence of Zr and O elements and their O=Zr=O bonds was categorized using EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. The plant molecules’ interface, bonding, binding energy, and their existence on the surface of ZrO2 NPs were established from XPS analysis. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using ZrO2 NPs was examined under visible light irradiation. The 94% degradation of toxic MB dye was achieved within 20 min. The antibacterial inhibition of ZrO2 NPs was tested against S. aureus and E. coli pathogens. Applications of bio-synthesized ZrO2 NPs including organic substance removal, pathogenic inhibitor development, catalysis, optical, and biomedical development were explored.

Kaolin-Supported Silver Nanoparticles as an Effective Catalyst for the Removal of Methylene Blue Dye from Aqueous Solutions

Water contamination by organic dyes has become a reason for severe environmental pollution and has been threatening the aquatic ecosystem. In this study, kaolin-supported silver nanoparticle (Ag-NP) composites were synthesized by a facile two-step adsorption-reduction method through the reduction of silver ions adsorbed onto locally available, inexpensive, and easily pretreated kaolin surfaces by using sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) for the catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solution. The morphology, structure, surface area, and interaction of the synthesized materials were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Characterization results showed the successful growth of Ag-NPs on the kaolin surface. To understand the catalytic degradation performance of the catalyst, batch experiments were carried out using MB dye as a model dye. The catalytic reduction tests confirmed the importance of Ag-NPs and the high catalytic activities of the synthesized Ag-NPs/kaolin composite toward MB dye reduction. The degradation results indicated that the increased Ag-NP content on the kaolin surface through repeating cycles could effectively enhance the removal of MB dye from an aqueous solution. The kinetic analysis of the MB dye degradation of the catalyst has fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. More than 97% removal efficiency was still present after five reuse cycles, demonstrating exceptional stability and reusability of the composite. In conclusion, the Ag-NPs supported kaolin (Ag-NPs/kaolin) composite was found to be a promising catalyst for the excellent catalytic activity to reduce a model dye MB from the aqueous solution in the presence of NaBH₄ with catalytic efficiency higher than 97% and a reduction rate constant, k _red, higher than 0.86 min^-1.

Preparation, Microstructural Characterization and Photocatalysis Tests of V5+-Doped TiO2/WO3 Nanocomposites Supported on Electrospun Membranes

Metal oxide nanocomposites (MON) have gained significant attention in the literature for the possibility of improving the optical and electronic properties of the hybrid material, compared to its pristine constituent oxides. These superior properties have been observed for TiO2 — based MON, which exhibit improved structural stability and photoactivity in environmental decontamination processes. In addition, the use of polymer membrane-supported MON is preferable to prevent further aggregation of particles, increase the surface area of the semiconductor in contact with the contaminant, and enable material reuse without considerable efficiency loss. In this work, V5+-doped TiO2/WO3 MON nanostructures were prepared by the sintering process at 500 °C and supported in electrospun fiber membranes for application as photocatalyst devices. Microstructural characterization of the samples was performed by XRD, SEM, EDS, Raman, and DSC techniques. The reflectance spectra showed that the bandgap of the MON was progressively decreased (3.20 to 2.11 eV) with the V5+ ions doping level increase. The fiber-supported MON showed photoactivity for rhodamine B dye degradation using visible light. In addition, the highest photodegradation efficiency was noted for the systems with 5 wt% vanadium oxide dispersed in the fibers (92% dye degradation in 120 min of exposure to the light source), with recyclability of the composite material for use in new photocatalysis cycles. The best results are directly related to the microstructure, lower bandgap and aggregation of metal oxide nanocomposite in the electrospun membrane, compared to the support-free MON.

Controlling oxygen vacancies of CoMn2O4 by loading on planar and tubular clay minerals and its application for boosted PMS activation

A representative transition metal oxide (TMO), CoMn₂O₄ (CMO), is recognized as an effective peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator with disadvantages like limited reactive sites and metal leakage. Herein, novel catalysts were synthesized by anchoring CMO on kaolinite (Kln) and halloysite (Hal) matrixes, two natural clay minerals with lamellar and tubular structures, for PMS activation in pharmaceutical degradation. Hal and Kln helped to control the crystallinity of CMO spontaneously with induce oxygen vacancies (OVs), which significantly enhanced the working efficiency. The reaction rate constants of Hal/CMO and Kln/CMO towards OFX degradation were nearly triple and twice that of bare CMO, respectively, with a 60% decrease in metal usage. The formation of OVs provided additional active sites for the reaction and accelerated the electron transfer. CMO/Hal and CMO/Kln exhibited better stability and durability than CMO, while CMO/Kln showed higher structural stability with lower metal leaching after 3 rounds of reaction. The higher crystallinity of CMO/Kln resulted in less OVs, but higher structural stability. The universal applicability of CMO/Hal and CMO/Kln were verified by using three other pharmaceuticals as probes. This work shed light on the modification of TMO catalysts by introducing clay mineral substrates for the efficient and ecofriendly remediation of pharmaceuticals in wastewater.
