Synchrotron Radiation Based X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis is one of the most promising green technologies to utilize solar energy for clean energy achievement and environmental governance. There is a knotty problem to rational designing high-performance photocatalyst, which largely depends on an in-depth insight into their structure-activity relationships and complex photocatalytic reaction mechanisms. Synchrotron radiation based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an important characterization method for photocatlayst to offer the element-specific key geometric and electronic structural information at the atomic level, on this basis, time-resolved XAS technique has a huge impact on mechanistic understanding of photochemical reaction owing to their powerful ability to probe, in real-time, the electronic and geometric structures evolution within photocatalysis reactions. This review will focus on the fundamentals of XAS and their applications in photocatalysis. The detailed applications obtained from XAS is described through the following aspects: 1) identifying local structure of photocatalyst; 2) uncovering in situ structure and chemical state evolution during photocatalysis; 3) revealing the photoexcited process. We will provide an in depth understanding on how the XAS method can guide the rational design of highly efficient photocatalyst. Finally, a systematic summary of XAS and related significance is made and the research perspectives are suggested.

Atomic-Level Interface Engineering for Boosting Oxygen Electrocatalysis Performance of Single-Atom Catalysts: From Metal Active Center to the First Coordination Sphere

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the core reactions of a series of advanced modern energy and conversion technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air cells. Among all kinds of oxygen electrocatalysts that have been reported, single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer great development potential because of their nearly 100% atomic utilization, unsaturated coordination environment, and tunable electronic structure. In recent years, numerous SACs with enriched active centers and asymmetric coordination have been successfully constructed by regulating their coordination environment and electronic structure, which has brought the development of atomic catalysts to a new level. This paper reviews the improvement of SACs brought by atom-level interface engineering. It starts with the introduction of advanced techniques for the characterizations of SACs. Subsequently, different design strategies that are applied to adjust the metal active center and first coordination sphere of SACs and then enhance their oxygen electrocatalysis performance are systematically illustrated. Finally, the future development of SACs toward ORR and OER is discussed and prospected.

How titanium and iron are integrated into hematite to enhance the photoelectrochemical water oxidation: a review

Hematite has been considered as a promising photoanode candidate for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation and has attracted numerous interests in the past decades. However, intrinsic drawbacks drastically lower its photocatalytic activity. Ti-based modifications including Ti-doping, Fe₂O₃/Fe₂TiO₅ heterostructures, TiO₂ passivation layers, and Ti-containing underlayers have shown great potential in enhancing the PEC conversion efficiency of hematite. Moreover, the combination of Ti-based modifications with various strategies towards more efficient hematite photoanodes has been widely investigated. Nevertheless, a corresponding comprehensive overview, especially with the most recent working mechanisms, is still lacking, limiting further improvement. In this respect, by summarizing the recent progress in Ti-modified hematite photoanodes, this review aims to demonstrate how the integration of titanium and iron atoms into hematite influences the PEC properties by tuning the carrier behaviours. It will provide more cues for the rational design of high-performance hematite photoanodes towards future practical applications.
