The Performance and Mechanism of a Mg-Al Double-Layer Oxide in Chloride ion Removal from an Aqueous Solution

Reactive P and S co-doped porous hollow nanotube arrays for high performance chloride ion storage

Developing stable, high-performance chloride-ion storage electrodes is essential for energy storage and water purification application. Herein, a P, S co-doped porous hollow nanotube array, with a free ion diffusion pathway and highly active adsorption sites, on carbon felt electrodes (CoNiPS@CF) is reported. Due to the porous hollow nanotube structure and synergistic effect of P, S co-doped, the CoNiPS@CF based capacitive deionization (CDI) system exhibits high desalination capacity (76.1 mgCl- g-1), fast desalination rate (6.33 mgCl- g-1 min-1) and good cycling stability (capacity retention rate of > 90%), which compares favorably to the state-of-the-art electrodes. The porous hollow nanotube structure enables fast ion diffusion kinetics due to the swift ion transport inside the electrode and the presence of a large number of reactive sites. The introduction of S element also reduces the passivation layer on the surface of CoNiP and lowers the adsorption energy for Cl- capture, thereby improving the electrode conductivity and surface electrochemical activity, and further accelerating the adsorption kinetics. Our results offer a powerful strategy to improve the reactivity and stability of transition metal phosphides for chloride capture, and to improve the efficiency of electrochemical dechlorination technologies.

Layered double hydroxide nanoparticles for a smartphone digital image colorimetry-based determination of fluoride ions in water, milk and dental products

A novel smartphone digital image colorimetry-based approach was developed for fluoride ion determination, using layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles (Mg2Al(OH)7) as sorbents for analyte preconcentration and as a source of a central metal ion for a colored complex formation. A cotton rotating disk provided effective retention of the LDH nanoparticles during solid-phase microextraction and elution, excluding time-consuming centrifugation process. In the proposed procedure, the nanoparticles acted as aluminum ion source for alizarin complexone-Al3+-F- complex formation. An image of Eppendorf tube, containing the colored complex solution was obtained by a smartphone and converted, using the RGB model for fluoride ion determination. The procedure had a linear range of 0.20-20 mg L-1 with a limit of detection of 0.06 mg L-1. The developed procedure provided effective fluoride separation from various matrices for its determination by a smartphone without additional sample pretreatment.

Adsorption Behaviors and Mechanism of Phenol and Catechol in Wastewater by Magnetic Graphene Oxides: A Comprehensive Study Based on Adsorption Experiments, Mathematical Models, and Molecular Simulations

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of phenol and catechol on magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) nanocomposites based on adsorption experiments, mathematical models, and molecular simulations. Through systematic experiments, the influence of various parameters, including contact time, pH conditions, and ionic strength, on the adsorption efficacy was comprehensively evaluated. The optimal contact time for adsorption was identified as 60 min, with the observation that an increase in inorganic salt concentration adversely affected the MGOs' adsorption capacity for both phenol and catechol. Specifically, MGOs exhibited a superior adsorption performance under mildly acidic conditions. The adsorption isotherm was well represented by the Langmuir model, suggesting monolayer coverage and finite adsorption sites for both pollutants. In terms of adsorption kinetics, a pseudo-first-order kinetic model was the most suitable for describing phenol adsorption, while catechol adsorption conformed more closely to a pseudo-second-order model, indicating distinct adsorption processes for these two similar compounds. Furthermore, this research utilized quantum chemical calculations to decipher the interaction mechanisms at the molecular level. Such calculations provided both a visual representation and a quantitative analysis of the interactions, elucidating the underlying physical and chemical forces governing the adsorption phenomena. The findings could not only offer crucial insights for the treatment of coal industrial wastewater containing phenolic compounds with bridging macroscopic observations with microscopic theoretical explanations but also advance the understanding of material-pollutant interactions in aqueous environments.

The Effect of Lithium Ion Leaching from Calcined Li-Al Hydrotalcite on the Rapid Removal of Ni2+/Cu2+ from Contaminated Aqueous Solutions

A layered double hydroxide (LDH) calcined-framework adsorbent was investigated for the rapid removal of heavy metal cations from plating wastewater. Li-Al-CO₃ LDH was synthesized on an aluminum lathe waste frame surface to prepare the sorbent. The calcination treatment modified the LDH surface properties, such as the hydrophilicity and the surface pH. The change in surface functional groups and the leaching of lithium ions affected the surface properties and the adsorption capacity of the heavy metal cations. A zeta potential analysis confirmed that the 400 °C calcination changed the LDH surface from positively charged (+10 mV) to negatively charged (-17 mV). This negatively charged surface contributed to the sorbent instantly bonding with heavy metal cations in large quantities, as occurs during contact with wastewater. The adsorption isotherms could be fitted using the Freundlich model. The pseudo-second-order model and the rate-controlled liquid-film diffusion model successfully simulated the adsorption kinetics, suggesting that the critical adsorption step was a heterogeneous surface reaction. This study also confirmed that the recovered nickel and/or copper species could be converted into supported metal nanoparticles with a high-temperature hydrogen reduction treatment, which could be reused as catalysts.

Regulation of Structure and Anion-Exchange Performance of Layered Double Hydroxide: Function of the Metal Cation Composition of a Brucite-like Layer

As anion-exchange materials, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted increasing attention in the fields of selective adsorption and separation, controlled drug release, and environmental remediation. The metal cation composition of the laminate is the essential factor that determines the anion-exchange performance of LDHs. Herein, we review the regulating effects of the metal cation composition on the anion-exchange properties and LDH structure. Specifically, the internal factors affecting the anion-exchange performance of LDHs were analyzed and summarized. These include the intercalation driving force, interlayer domain environment, and LDH morphology, which significantly affect the anion selectivity, anion-exchange capacity, and anion arrangement. By changing the species, valence state, size, and mole ratio of the metal cations, the structural characteristics, charge density, and interlayer spacing of LDHs can be adjusted, which affect the anion-exchange performance of LDHs. The present challenges and future prospects of LDHs are also discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review to summarize the essential relationship between the metal ion composition and anion-exchange performance of laminates, providing important insights for regulating the anion-exchange performance of LDHs.

Nanoporous Carbon from Oil Palm Leaves via Hydrothermal Carbonization-Combined KOH Activation for Paraquat Removal

In this study, nano-porous carbon was completely obtained from oil palm leaves (OPL) by hydrothermal pretreatment with chemical activation, using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an activating agent. Potassium hydroxide was varied, with different ratios of 1:0.25, 1:1, and 1:4 (C: KOH; w/w) during activation. The physical morphology of nano-porous carbon has a spongy, sponge-like structure indicating an increase in specific surface area and porosity with the increasing amount of KOH activating agent. The highest specific surface area of OPL nano-porous carbon is approximately 1685 m²·g^-1, with a total pore volume of 0.907 cm³·g^-1. Moreover, the OPL nano-porous carbon significantly showed a mesoporous structure designed specifically to remove water pollutants. The adsorptive behavior of OPL nano-porous carbon was quantified by using paraquat as the target pollutant. The equilibrium analyzes were explained by the Langmuir model isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The maximum efficiency of paraquat removal in wastewater was 79%, at a paraquat concentration of 400 mg·L^-1, for 10 min in the adsorption experiment. The results of this work demonstrated the practical application of nano-porous carbon derived from oil palm leaves as an alternative adsorbent for removing paraquat and other organic matter in wastewater.

Adsorption of nitrate from interflow by the Mg/Fe calcined layered double hydroxides

Nitrate loss in interflow caused serious nitrate pollution of neighboring water bodies in the purple soil region of China's Sichuan Province. In this study, Mg/Fe(Al)-calcined layered double hydroxides (Mg/Fe(Al)-CLDHs) with varied Mg/Fe(Al) ratios were synthesized for nitrate removal from interflow, and 3:1 Mg/Fe CLDH exhibited the best adsorption performance. The effects of initial pH, adsorbent dosage and co-existing anions on the adsorption performance were investigated by batch experiments. The best-fitting kinetic and isothermal models for nitrate adsorption were the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model, respectively, indicating that the adsorption process was a physical-chemical multilayer process. The maximum adsorption capacity of nitrate was 73.36 mg/g, which was higher than that of many other commonly used adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques, and the XRD and FT-IR results revealed that the adsorption mechanism involved original layered structure reconstruction and ion-exchange interaction. Under the coexistence of SO₄^2- and Cl^-, 75.63% nitrate in interflow could be removed after 6 h of adsorption. Overall, the synthesized Mg/Fe CLDH is an effective and low-cost nitrate adsorbent for in-situ nitrate removal.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of Magnetized Lanthanum (III)-Based Metal-Organic Framework for the Organic Dye Removal from Water

A hybrid composite based on metal-organic framework (MOF) was chemically fabricated by embedding the magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles within amino-functionalized porous La-MOF (MOF/NH2) to produce a highly efficient and reusable composite of MOF/NH2/Fe3O4. Different proper techniques were used for the characterization of surface morphology and chemical arrangement of the prepared MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite. The characterization results using various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller analysis (BET), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) approved the successful fabrication of MOF with amino arms on its surface besides the well magnetization using magnetic nanoparticles. The MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite showed enhanced adsorption capacity (618 mg/g) toward methyl orange (MO) anionic dye which is higher than many commercial reported adsorbents due to the presence of many types of adsorption sites (NH2 groups and lanthanum sites), large surface area of MOF, and the synergetic effect of magnetic nanoparticles. Moreover, the MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite showed selective adsorption of MO dye from dye mixtures owing to the electrostatic attraction. Also, the MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite retained over 90% of its efficiency for the dye removal even after six successive cycles. So, the present study provided a practical strategy for the design of functional MOF hybrid composites. Furthermore, due to the adaptability of its architectural form, it is a potential adsorbent material for industrial wastewater treatment uses.
