Sustainable Synthesis of Cadmium Sulfide, with Applicability in Photocatalysis, Hydrogen Production, and as an Antibacterial Agent, Using Two Mechanochemical Protocols

Mechanochemical one-pot synthesis of heterostructured pentlandite-carbon composites for the hydrogen evolution reaction

We have utilized carbon sources as milling additives to enable a direct mechanochemical one-pot synthesis of Fe3Co3Ni3S8/carbon (Pn/C) materials using elemental reaction mixtures. The obtained Pn/C materials are thoroughly characterized and their carbon content could be adjusted up to 50 wt%. In addition to carbon black (CB) as an additive, Pn/C materials were produced using graphite, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which allows the overall physicochemical properties of materials for energy storage applications to be adjusted. By employing the Pn/C materials as electrocatalysts for the HER in a zero-gap proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, we were able to reach a current density of 1 A cm-2 at a cell potential as low as 2.12 V using Pn, which was synthesized with 25 wt% CB. Furthermore, electrolysis at an applied current density of 1 A cm-2 for 100 h displays a stable performance, thus providing a sustainable synthesis procedure for potential future energy storage applications. Herein, we show that catalyst supports play an important role in the overall performance.

Mesoporous Dual-Semiconductor ZnS/CdS Nanocomposites as Efficient Visible Light Photocatalysts for Hydrogen Generation

The development of functional catalysts for the photogeneration of hydrogen (H2) via water-splitting is crucial in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. To that end, metal-sulfide semiconductors, such as CdS and ZnS, can play a significant role in the process due to their interesting optoelectronic and catalytic properties. However, inefficient charge-carrier dissociation and poor photochemical stability remain significant limitations to photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, dual-semiconductor nanocomposites of ZnS/CdS nanocrystal assemblies (NCAs) are developed as efficient visible light photocatalysts for H2 generation. The resultant materials, synthesized via a polymer-templated self-polymerization method, comprise a unique combination of ~5-7 nm-sized metal-sulfide nanoparticles that are interlinked to form a 3D open-pore structure with large internal surface area (up to 285 m2 g-1) and uniform pores (circa 6-7 nm). By adjusting the ratio of constituent nanoparticles, the optimized ZnS/CdS catalyst with 50 wt.% ZnS content demonstrates a remarkable stability and visible light H2-evolution activity (~29 mmol g-1 h-1 mass activity) with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 60% at 420 nm. Photocatalytic evaluation experiments combined with electrochemical and spectroscopic studies suggest that the superior photocatalytic performance of these materials stems from the accessible 3D open-pore structure and the efficient defect-mediated charge transfer mechanism at the ZnS/CdS nanointerfaces. Overall, this work provides a new perspective for designing functional and stable photocatalytic materials for sustainable H2 production.

Cadmium Sulfide Nanoparticles: Preparation, Characterization, and Biomedical Applications

Cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) have been employed in various fields of nanobiotechnology due to their proven biomedical properties. They are unique in their properties due to their size and shape, and they are popular in the area of biosensors, bioimaging, and antibacterial and anticancer applications. Most CdS NPs are generally synthesized through chemical, physical, or biological methods. Among these methods, biogenic synthesis has attracted more attention due to its high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and biocompatibility features. The green approach was found to be superior to other methods in terms of maintaining the structural characteristics needed for optimal biomedical applications. The size and coating components of CdS NPs play a crucial role in their biomedical activities, such as anticancer, antibacterial, bioimaging, and biosensing applications. CdS NPs have gained significant interest in bioimaging due to their desirable properties, including good dispersion, cell integrity preservation, and efficient light scattering. Despite these, further studies are necessary, particularly in vivo studies to reduce NPs' toxicity. This review discusses the different methods of synthesis, how CdS NPs are characterized, and their applications in the biomedical field.

Mechanochemical synthesis of non-stoichiometric copper sulfide Cu1.8S applicable as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent and synthesis scalability verification

An effort to prepare different non-stoichiometric Cu_xS_y compounds starting from elemental precursors using mechanochemistry was made in this study. However, out of the 7 stoichiometries tested, it was only possible to obtain three phases: covellite CuS, chalcocite Cu₂S and digenite Cu_1.8S and their mixtures. To obtain the digenite phase with the highest purity, the Cu : S stoichiometric ratio needed to be fixed at 1.6 : 1. The reaction between copper and sulfur was completed within a second range, however, milling was performed for up to 15 minutes until the equilibrium in phase composition between digenite and covellite was reached. The possibility of preparing the product in a 300 g batch by eccentric vibratory milling in 30 minutes was successfully verified at the end. The estimated crystallite sizes for the digenite Cu_1.8S obtained via lab-scale and scalable experiments were around 12 and 17 nm, respectively. The obtained products were found to be efficient photocatalysts under visible light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, being capable of the complete degradation of the Methyl Orange dye in a concentration of 10 mg L^-1 in 2 hours. Finally, the antibacterial potential of both lab-scale and large-scale industrial products was proven and, regardless of the manufacturing scale, the nanoparticles retained their properties against bacterial cells.

Assessment of Performance of Photocatalytic Nanostructured Materials with Varied Morphology Based on Reaction Conditions

Synthesis of nanomaterials with specific morphology is an essential aspect for the optimisation of its properties and applications. The application of nanomaterials is being discussed in a wide range of areas, one of which is directly relevant to the environment through photocatalysis. To produce an effective photocatalyst for environmental applications, morphology plays an important role as it affects the surface area, interfaces, crystal facets and active sites, which ultimately affects efficiency. The method of synthesis and synthesis temperature can be the basic considerations for the evaluation of a particular nanomaterial. In this study, we have considered the aspects of morphology with a basic understanding and analyzed them in terms of nanomaterial efficacy in photocatalysis. Different morphologies of specific nanomaterials such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, silver phosphate, cadmium sulphide and zinc titanate have been discussed to come to reasonable conclusions. Morphologies such as nanorods, nanoflower, nanospindles, nanosheets, nanospheres and nanoparticles were compared within and outside the domain of given nanomaterials. The different synthesis strategies adopted for a specific morphology have been compared with the photocatalytic performance. It has been observed that nanomaterials with similar band gaps show different performances, which can be linked with the reaction conditions and their nanomorphology as well. Materials with similar morphological structures show different photocatalytic performances. TiO₂ nanorods appear to have the best features of efficient photocatalyst, while the nanoflowers show very low efficiency. For CdS, the nanoflower is the best morphology for photocatalysis. It appears that high surface area is the key apart from the morphology, which controls the efficiency. The overall understanding by analyzing all the available information has enumerated a path to select an effective photocatalyst amongst the several nanomaterials available. Such an analysis and comparison is unique and has provided a handle to select the effective morphology of nanomaterials for photocatalytic applications.

Ternary and Quaternary Nanocrystalline Cu-Based Sulfides as Perspective Antibacterial Materials Mechanochemically Synthesized in a Scalable Fashion

Twelve Cu-based ternary (Cu-Me₁-S, Me₁ = Fe, Sn, or Sb) and quaternary (Cu-Me₂-Sn-S, Me₂ = Fe, Zn, or V) nanocrystalline sulfides are shown as perspective antibacterial materials here. They were prepared from elemental precursors by a one-step solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis in a 100 g batch using scalable eccentric vibratory ball milling. Most of the products have shown strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. For instance, stannite Cu₂FeSnS₄ and mohite Cu₂SnS₃ were the most active against E. coli, whereas kesterite Cu₂ZnSnS₄ and rhodostannite Cu₂FeSn₃S₈ exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus. In general, stannite has shown the best antibacterial properties out of all the studied samples. Five out of twelve products have been prepared using mechanochemical synthesis for the first time in a scalable fashion here. The presented synthetic approach is a promising alternative to traditional syntheses of nanomaterials suitable for biological applications and shows ternary and quaternary sulfides as potential candidates for the next-generation antibacterial agents.

Photoinduced Antibacterial Activity and Cytotoxicity of CdS Stabilized on Mesoporous Aluminosilicates and Silicates

Inactivation of bacteria under the influence of visible light in presence of nanostructured materials is an alternative approach to overcome the serious problem of the growing resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics. Cadmium sulfide quantum dots are superefficient photocatalytic material suitable for visible light transformation. In this work, CdS nanoparticles with size of less than 10 nm (QDs) were synthesized on the surface of natural and synthetic mesoporous aluminosilicates and silicates (halloysite nanotubes, MCM-41, MCM-41/Halloysite, SBA-15). Materials containing 5–7 wt.% of CdS were characterized and tested as agents for photocatalytic bacteria degradation of Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli with multiple antibiotic resistance. Eukaryotic cell viability tests were also conducted on the model cancer cells A 459. We found that the carrier affects prokaryotic and eukaryotic toxicity of CdS quantum dots. CdS/MCM-41/HNTs were assumed to be less toxic to eukaryotic cells and possess the most prominent photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency. Under visible light irradiation, it induced 100% bacterial growth inhibition at the concentration of 125 μg/mL and the bacteriostatic effect at the concentration of 63 μg/mL. CdS/MCM-41/HNTs showed 100% E. coli growth inhibition in the concentration of 1000 μg/mL under visible light irradiation.
