Nanostructured Coatings: Review on Processing Techniques, Corrosion Behaviour and Tribological Performance

Zigzag boron nitride nanotube functionalization as a sensor for the recognition of group IIA (Mg2+, Ca2+) metal ions, quasi-metal (Si2+, Ge2+) ions, and transition metal (Cu2+, Zn2+) ions: a computational study

CONTEXT

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) provide an exceptional and sophisticated platform for detecting metal ions with high surface area and remarkable chemical stability. Metal cations tend to bind to the surface of BNNTs, which leads to significant changes in the electrical properties of nanotubes. BNNT-based metal ion sensors have shown promising results in various applications, including water quality monitoring, biomedical research, industrial quality control, and environmental monitoring. In the present study, we have explored the electronic sensitivity of the BNNT to metal ions (Si2+, Ge2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+). The interaction between the ions with the pristine BNNT is performed in the solution phase. The results show that ion adsorption on the nanotube surface is exothermic and favorable. The density of states calculation is presented to investigate the electronic properties of the nanotube during the adsorption process. The results display that an increase in the electrical conductivity of the complexes accompanies the reduction in the energy gap. Based on the obtained data, the Si2+ and Ge2+ cations adsorbed on the BNNT with satisfactory Eg changes (%ΔE) can be promising candidates for better sensing ability.

METHOD

All calculations are conducted within the density functional theory (DFT) using the ωB97XD functional and 6-31G(d,p) basis set. The present approach incorporates the utilization of empirical atom-atom dispersion in conjunction with long-range correction. The calculations are performed using the quantum chemistry package GAMESS, and the obtained results are visualized by employing the GaussView 6.0.16 program.

Nanoceramic-based coatings for corrosion protection: a review on synthesis, mechanisms, and applications

Corrosion is a pervasive issue with significant economic and safety implications across various industries. Nanoceramic-based coatings have emerged as a promising solution for corrosion protection due to their unique properties and mechanisms. This review aims to comprehensively examine the synthesis, mechanisms, and applications of nanoceramic-based coatings for corrosion protection. The review begins by highlighting the importance of corrosion protection and its impact on different industries. It introduces nanoceramic-based coatings as a potential solution to address this challenge. The objective is to provide a thorough understanding of the synthesis methods, mechanisms, and applications of these coatings. The fundamental principles of corrosion and different corrosion mechanisms are discussed, along with the limitations of traditional corrosion protection methods. The review emphasizes how nanoceramic-based coatings can overcome these limitations and provide superior corrosion resistance. Various synthesis methods, including sol-gel, electrodeposition, and physical vapor deposition, are described in detail, along with the factors influencing the synthesis process. Recent advancements and innovations in nanoceramic coating synthesis techniques are also highlighted. This looks at how coatings made with tiny ceramic particles protect against corrosion. It examines the importance of small-scale details like particle size, shape, and what the particles are made of. The formation of passive layers, self-healing mechanisms, and barrier properties of nanoceramic coatings are explained. The diverse applications of nanoceramic coatings for corrosion protection in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and marine are comprehensively discussed. Case studies and examples demonstrating the significant corrosion resistance and improved performance achieved with nanoceramic coatings are presented.

Nanoparticle and Nanostructure Synthesis and Controlled Growth Methods

Nanomaterials are materials with one or more nanoscale dimensions (internal or external) (i.e., 1 to 100 nm). The nanomaterial shape, size, porosity, surface chemistry, and composition are controlled at the nanoscale, and this offers interesting properties compared with bulk materials. This review describes how nanomaterials are classified, their fabrication, functionalization techniques, and growth-controlled mechanisms. First, the history of nanomaterials is summarized and then the different classification methods, based on their dimensionality (0-3D), composition (carbon, inorganic, organic, and hybrids), origin (natural, incidental, engineered, bioinspired), crystal phase (single phase, multiphase), and dispersion state (dispersed or aggregated), are presented. Then, the synthesis methods are discussed and classified in function of the starting material (bottom-up and top-down), reaction phase (gas, plasma, liquid, and solid), and nature of the dispersing forces (mechanical, physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological). Finally, the challenges in synthesizing nanomaterials for research and commercial use are highlighted.

Formation and Antibacterial Activity of AlOOH/Ag Composite Coating on Macroporous α-Al2O3 Ceramics

In this study, the modification of macroporous α-Al2O3 ceramics with AlOOH nanostructures impregnated with silver particles is carried out using bicomponent Al/Ag nanoparticles obtained by the simultaneous electrical explosion of Al and Ag wires. Nanoparticle suspension impregnation of porous ceramics followed by oxidation with water is shown to lead to the formation of a continuous AlOOH nanosheet coating on the ceramic surface, with silver releasing on the surface of nanosheets in the form of individual particles sized 5–30 nm. Modified with AlOOH/Ag nanostructures, macroporous α-Al2O3 pellets with a diameter of 11 mm and a thickness of 5 mm show 100% efficiency for water purification from bacteria with a concentration of 105 CFU/mL for 7.5 min at a flow rate of 6.7 mL/min.
